We’re starting to see some conference battles on the soccer pitch and several important matches are on today’s schedule. Here’s a preview.

METRO

The main attraction is a huge contest between Skyline and Frederick inside the Tri-Valley. The two are unbeaten in league play and tied with Windsor for the early conference lead. Today’s match actually starts an important week for the Falcons as they also face Windsor on Thursday. Should they win both matches, they’ll be alone in first.

In Class 3A, state powers St Mary’s and Manitou Springs collide in Colorado Springs. The Pirates are 3-0-1 and ranked number one in the state. They battled Kent Denver to a scoreless tie in their last meeting. Manitou Springs has a single loss to 2nd ranked Classical Academy but has won two straight since outscoring Trinidad and Fountain Valley 12-1. They also face Faith Christian on Friday.

In 5A, the Centennial league slate gets underway this afternoon. Arapahoe and Smoky Hill are the only unbeaten teams left and they both hit the road today. Arapahoe is 5-0 as they go to Eaglecrest while 3-0 Smoky Hill meets a very good Mullen squad.

Elsewhere today, Rocky Mountain entertains Lakewood. The Lobos are 4-0 on the season and have yet to allow a goal. Broomfield carries a four game winning streak into their Northern conference battle with Mountain View. In the Continental, Castle View is home to Highlands Ranch. The Sabercats are one of four teams still unbeaten in league play and are tied with Chaparral, Mountain Vista and Rock Canyon.

WESTERN

Fruita Monument and Grand Junction face off for sole possession of first place inside the Southwestern League. Grand Junction is 4-0 in league play and has outscored those opponents 22-2. They’ve won five straight overall since a 1-0 loss to Coronado to open the season. Fruita Monument is 3-0-1 against conference foes. They battled to a scoreless tie with Durango to open the league schedule but have since taken out Montezuma Cortez, Montrose and Grand Junction Central. They whipped Central 4-0 last Saturday.

In 4A, Glenwood Springs and Palisade have yet to lose a conference game and the two are tied with Steamboat Springs for the early conference lead. Both the Demons and Bulldogs are on the road today. Glenwood heads to Eagle Valley and should have little trouble with the winless Devils. A more important match looms Saturday against co-leader Steamboat Springs. Palisade downed Battle Mountain 3-0 last month and will shoot for a second straight win against the Huskies this afternoon.

Coal Ridge is ranked 9th in Class 3A this week. They’re expecting little trouble at home from Vail Mountain. Coal Ridge is 5-1 on the season. Also today, Bayfield goes to Alamosa. The Wolverines blasted Ignacio 8-0 in their last match. Alamosa opened 2-0 but has not won in their last three games including a tie with Ridgway last week.

EASTERN

Almost every Eastern Colorado team is in action today. The most important matchup pits Sterling on the road to Roosevelt for a Tri-Valley contest. The two battled to a scoreless tie on March 18th. Sterling has won two in a row since while Roosevelt has dropped their last two. Also today, Bennett takes a 2-3 record into their match at Lake County, Weld Central looks to keep Wiggins winless and Lamar heads to Trinidad. The Savages are 0-3 with Trinidad at 1-3.

Monday is a very light day on the soccer pitch but here’s a quick look at the top matchups and a recap of the best contests from the weekend.

EASTERN PLAINS

Area teams went 1-1 on Saturday. Bennett scored a dozen goals in a 12-2 rout of Arrupe Jesuit but Trinidad came up short in a 7-1 loss to Evangelical Christian. Later today, both Fort Morgan and Sterling host league matches against Tri Valley rivals Northridge and Windsor. Northridge is 1-3 on the young season while Fort Morgan enters the match 1-2. The Mustangs tripped up Wiggins for their first win of the campaign two days ago. Sterling is 0-2-1 thus far so they’ll look for their first win at home against the Wizards this afternoon.

WESTERN SLOPE

The conference schedule inside the Southwestern League also got off to a start on Saturday. Defending league champion Durango fought to a scoreless tie with Montrose while Fruita Monument blanked Montezuma-Cortez 2-0. Grand Junction Central was not involved in conference play but they came up short in a 3-1 loss to Battle Mountain. The Huskies are one of the top teams in the 4A Western Slope.

This afternoon, Glenwood Springs and Moffat County square off in league play. The host Demons are 2-0 on the season and heavily favored to post the win. Moffat County is 0-1 on the young season.

METRO

2nd ranked Arapahoe and 4th ranked Cherry Creek continued their solid starts of the season. Arapahoe moved to 4-0 overall by downing Dakota Ridge 2-1. The Warriors have outscored opponents 13-3 thus far. Cherry Creek blanked Arvada West 2-0 as they also stayed perfect overall.
Other impressive winners on Saturday were Monarch, Ralston valley, Silver Creek and Denver East. They all posted shutout wins and all scored at least two goals of their own. Evergreen also edged Bear Creek 3-2 in what may have been the best match of the day. The Cougars seek another win this afternoon as they face Alameda. Evergreen is 3-1 with Alameda checking in a 2-1.

Also on the schedule today is an unbeaten matchup between Conifer and Green Mountain. The Lobos are 3-0 with Green Mountain at 1-0-1. Frederick heads to Roosevelt for an early season clash in the Tri Valley while Skyline tangles with Longmont in the Northern league. They are a combined 5-2 overall.

Top teams in all divisions have faced or will battle top opponents this week. Here’s a quick rundown of the results of the matches played so far and the contests that lie ahead.

METRO

Wheat Ridge again appears to be the team to beat in the 4A division. The two-time defending state champions scored a 2-0 shutout of Cheyenne Mountain on Thursday. The Indians were a state semi-finalist a year ago and were ranked third in the state by the Denver Post before the loss. Wheat Ridge improved to 3-0 and has allowed only one goal in those three wins. They’ve lost just one match since the start of the 2009 season.

In 3A, St Mary’s Academy and Colorado Academy battled to a scoreless tie and Holy Family blanked The Academy 4-0. Three of those teams are ranked in the top ten. In the 4A South Central, Pueblo Centennial moved to 3-0 by blitzing Pueblo East 6-1 and Canon City opened their league slate by drilling Pueblo Central 8-0. In 5A, Pine Creek improved to 3-0 with their 2-0 shutout of Chatfield.

Today, Pueblo Centennial returns to the pitch for a non-conference game with Fountain Fort Carson. The Trojans are 3-2 overall. Also in 4A, Skyline is 3-0 as they host in-city rival Silver Creek. Fairview goes to Dakota Ridge today. Those two teams are 3-0-1 combined. Defending 3A state champion St Mary’s is 1-0 as they host Salida. The Spartans are also 1-0.

EASTERN

Sterling is the lone Eastern Colorado team on the pitch today. The Tigers are 0-2 on the season but have a chance to pick up a win as they host Roosevelt. The Roughriders are coming off a wild 3-2 win in overtime Wednesday night against Fort Morgan. They’re 2-1 on the season.

WESTERN

Play inside the Southwestern conference gets underway this afternoon. Two league games are on the docket as Durango heads to Fruita Monument and Montezuma Cortez plays Montrose. Of those four teams, only Montezuma Cortez is still unbeaten. They’re 2-0 as they challenge the Indians who have one win in three matches thus far. Durango is the defending league champion. The Demons won nine of ten conference games last year to edge out Grand Junction by one game for the conference title.

The first of several important matchups in the 3A Western Slope soccer chase took place on Thursday with Basalt scoring a 2-0 shutout of Aspen. Those two are expected to battle with Coal Ridge for the conference championship. Basalt improved to 2-0 with the win and has outscored their first two opponents 5-0. Aspen must quickly recover as they head to Coal Ridge tomorrow. The Titans are ranked 9th in Class 3A by the Denver post.

The match between Steamboat Springs and Moffat County was postponed on Thursday and will now be played April 11th. The Sailors are 2-0-1 on the young season and are scheduled to face Battle Mountain tonight.

The first of three soccer championships will be decided tonight as Classical Academy faces St Mary’s for the 3A crown. Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City is the site for the first of three championships matches over the next two days. Classes 4A and 5A will hand out Gold Balls tomorrow night.

Both teams are coming off upsets in the semi-finals. Classical Academy, the 4th seed, upset top ranked and defending state champion Colorado Springs Christian 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday. It avenged a loss to the Lions earlier in the season. Peter Tonsits nailed the game winning goal in the second extra period.

The 6th seeded Pirates upended 3rd seed Faith Christian in the semi-finals 1-0. Evan Niebur netted the only goal of the contest.

Tonight’s match is the second of the season for the two Colorado Springs area rivals and fans on hand hope for a closer contest. Back on September 18th, Classical Academy routed St Mary’s 5-0. That win basically turned the Titans season around. They had opened just 2-4 but the win over the Pirates started them on their current 11-1-1 string. Their only loss in that stretch came against Colorado Springs Christian, which they avenged in the state semi-finals.

Classical Academy has outscored playoff opponents 16-3. They are very explosive offensively with Evan Young scoring a team best 32 goals. The senior scored four goals in the regular season win over St Mary’s. Brad Dyess is next in line with ten.

St Mary’s has won nine of their last 11 matches. They also fell to Colorado Springs Christian during the regular season and also tied Manitou Springs during their current streak. More defensive oriented than the Titans, the Pirates have had ten players score this year with the list led by Joe Morales with ten.

CLASS 3A – STATE SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

7:00pm / Dick’s Sporting Goods Park

#4 Classical Academy (13-5-1) vs #6 St Mary’s (12-5-2)

Coming up tomorrow are championship matches in Classes 4A and 5A. In the 4A ranks, 8th seeded Broomfield challenges 2nd seeded and once beaten Air Academy. In 5A, Mountain Vista tries to finish off a perfect season when they line up against Cherry Creek. The first match opens at five o’clock with the 5A finals to follow at 7:30pm. Both matches are set for Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

State soccer tournaments return to center stage today as the big school ranks conduct their quarterfinal round. The bracket is playing out as expected as most of the favorites are still competing for a state title. Class 4A quarterfinals will be played Wednesday with the 3A round of eight to follow on Thursday.

The top four seeds in the 5A boys state soccer tournament are still alive as the quarterfinals open this afternoon. Mountain Vista is the number one seed and the Golden Eagles stayed perfect on the season with their 2-1 win over Adams City last week. They’re now 16-0 entering their match with Rangeview tonight. The Raiders have won their first two matches by identical 1-0 scores. They’re seeded 8th in the bracket.

The winner of that contest will face either Lincoln or ThunderRidge in the semi-finals this Saturday. The Lancers are seeded 4th but ThunderRidge continues to be the biggest surprise. Seeded only 21st in the bracket to begin the tournament, the Grizzlies stunned Pine Creek in the first round and then downed Ralston Valley in the round of 16. Today the challenge is a bit bigger. Lincoln is coming off a 4-1 win over Chaparral in their last match.

Cherry Creek and Boulder are seeded second and third in the bracket. Both are in action tonight. The Bruins entertain Bear Creek while Boulder faces cross-town rival Fairview. Fairview may be a bit tired after working with through two overtimes before winning on penalty kicks over Arapahoe on Friday. Boulder won the regular season match 1-0 back on October 5th. Cherry Creek has not lost to an in-state opponent this year but were tied by Chatfield, Fairview and Arapahoe.

The Class 4A bracket will play out their quarterfinals tomorrow night. That bracket was shook up over the weekend as top seeded Cheyenne Mountain was eliminated by Durango. The 17th seeded Demons seek a third straight upset at Broomfield tomorrow night. The Eagles are 12-2-3 on the season and will be favored at home. They ousted Montrose 2-1 in round two.

Other quarterfinal matchups in 4A feature D’Evelyn against Evergreen, Longmont at Air Academy and Mullen at Windsor. Winners meet up Saturday in the state semi-finals. With the loss by Cheyenne Mountain, Air Academy is now the tournament favorite. They’re 16-1 on the season and seeded second but their lone loss came against Cheyenne Mountain during the regular season.

Soccer teams across the state are either continuing or starting their conference schedules so our weekly update will focus on the conference standings. The weekly soccer update is available each Wednesday on the Colorado Preps website. If you have info you would like to include in the weekly report, you may send that info to Kevin@coloradopreps.com.

WESTERN SLOPE

Coal Ridge is off to a red hot 6-0 start this season and they currently lead the 3A Western Slope standings. The Titans have outscored their six opponents 22-1 this season with their only goal allowed coming in a win over Basalt. The Titans are next in action tomorrow against Grand Valley and they also have a date with Rifle on Saturday. Down the road, Coal Ridge will have a rematch with traditional power Aspen on September 30th. They’ve already beaten the Skiers 3-0 this season.

Basalt has won three straight since the loss to Coal Ridge. The Longhorns will challenge the Titans again on October 19th. They host the Oysters of Colorado Rocky Mountain tomorrow and then face Hotchkiss in a key conference match next Tuesday.

In the 4A ranks, Battle Mountain took control of the Western Slope race with a 3-2 win over Moffat County last night. Both teams were unbeaten in league play going but now the Huskies are alone at the top. They’re 5-0 overall with four of those wins coming in league play. In addition to last night’s win over Moffat County, the Huskies have also beaten third place Steamboat Springs. Next up is a road match at Glenwood Springs tomorrow.

The loss to Battle Mountain ended Moffat County’s perfect season. Now alone in second place, they still have the advantage over third place Steamboat Springs since they beat the Sailors 5-1 last week.

Montrose currently has the lead in the Southwestern League. The Indians are 5-1 overall and 4-0 in league play. Two of those wins are against Fruita Monument plus the Indians have beaten Durango and Montezuma Cortez. They’ve outscored those opponents 18-3. The Indians are at Eagle Valley tomorrow and then host Central and Grand Junction next Tuesday and Thursday. Grand Junction scored their first league win of the season last night in a 3-0 shutout of Grand Junction Central.

METRO UPDATE

We’ll start in the 5A Front Range where four teams share the early lead. Boulder, Rocky Mountain and Fossil Ridge are all 2-0 with Horizon at 1-0. Boulder sits at 5-0 overall so they have the best record of the bunch. The Panthers go to Poudre tomorrow and then challenge Denver East on Saturday. Next Thursday, they’ll face off with Fossil Ridge in a key conference clash.

Northglenn leads the East Metro at 3-0. The Norse have won four straight since their 0-3 start. They’re next in action on Tuesday at Aurora Central. Just one match has been played in the Colorado Springs Metro. Fountain Fort Carson beat Palmer. Rampart has the best overall record at 4-2. They open league play against Doherty tomorrow.

In the Continental, five teams are unbeaten and share the top spot. Two of them meet up tomorrow when Douglas County faces ThunderRidge. The Huskies also battle Chaparral next Tuesday. The Wolverines are also part of that five way tie atop the standings. League play opens in the Centennial tomorrow. Eaglecrest and Cherry Creek appear to be the favorites. The Raptors face Arapahoe tomorrow while Creek opens at Cherokee Trail. Creek and Eaglecrest square off next Tuesday.

Ralston Valley, Bear Creek, Columbine and Pomona are the four teams that grabbed wins in the opening round of league games inside the Jeffco. Ralston Valley (5-2) has the best overall record of the four so they may be considered the favorite. They face Columbine tomorrow in an early but important battle. Standley Lake is another team to key on. The Gators are 3-0 but have yet to play a conference match.
Denver East is again the favorite in the City League. They’re unbeaten at 2-0 going into their match with Denver North. If the Eagles are pushed, that challenge could come from either Lincoln (4-1) or Kennedy (3-1).

In Class 4A, Broomfield and Niwot share the early lead in the Northern. Both are 1-0 and won’t face off until October 21st. Broomfield goes to Silver Creek on Saturday while Niwot is at Greeley Central this afternoon. In the Tri Valley, Northridge is in first place. They are 4-0 and lead both Windsor and Skyline by a game. The Grizzlies topped Windsor 2-1 last week and will face Skyline on Monday. In between is a trip to Sterling tonight.

Canon City and Pueblo Centennial share the lead in the South Central. The Tigers have won their first five conference games by the margin of 36-5. They scored a major win over Pueblo South 2-1 last week. Centennial is 3-0-1 in league play and is coming off a tie to Pueblo South. The two leaders meet up on Saturday.

Air Academy has been dominant in the Colorado Springs Metro. The Kadets are 7-0 overall and have outscored opponents 37-3. They’re tied with three others including Cheyenne Mountain for the conference lead. Four other teams have just one league loss so the race is very crowded.

Evergreen and D’Evelyn (both 2-0) are tied for the early Jeffco lead. Evergreen is at Wheat Ridge tonight but won’t face D’Evelyn until October 5th. D’Evelyn goes to Lewis Palmer on Thursday but returns to league play against Arvada on Tuesday.

In Class 3A, defending state champion Colorado Springs Christian could be the team to beat again this season. The Lions are 4-0 but have been tested only once and they passed the exam with a 1-0 win over Kent Denver. Three other wins have been won by a margin of 17-0. The Lions face another good team tomorrow in Fountain Valley. The Danes have not played a strong schedule but outscored opponents 18-2 in their six wins.

Kent Denver (5-1) has won two straight since their loss to Colorado Springs Christian. The goal in that game is the only one allowed by the Sun Devils all season. They have a good stretch coming up with matches against Colorado Academy (4-1) on Friday, Peak to Peak (3-1) next Tuesday, and at Fountain Valley on October 2nd.

Two teams to watch could be Estes Park (6-0) and Holy Family (4-1). Neither has played a strong schedule but both are posting wins along the win. The Bobcats’ best wins are against Heritage Christian (5-3) and Berthoud (4-3). Holy Family lost to Berthoud (5-0) but has won three straight. Their four wins are against teams with a combined record of 2-20-2.

EASTERN PLAINS

Weld Central dropped their opening match to Manual (2-1) but is unbeaten since. The Rebels have been dominant over their last four matches winning by the margin of 37-0. Of those four opponents, (2-4) has the best record so the Rebels have not faced a long list of high level opponents. That changes on Saturday when they host defending state champion Colorado Springs Christian. In between is a home match with Bennett tomorrow. The Tigers are winless in four matches (0-3-1).

Lamar sits at 3-2 with two of those wins coming against Colorado Springs School. Up next is a trip to Salida on Saturday. They also a good test at James Irwin (6-1 record) on October 2nd and again at home against Fountain Valley (6-0) on October 12th.

Fort Morgan and Sterling are currently bringing up the rear in the Tri Valley standings. The Mustangs (1-4) have the edge based on their 2-0 win over the Tigers last week. The Mustangs are tied with Roosevelt for fourth place and have a chance to take over the spot by themselves when they meet the Roughriders on September 29th (next Thursday). In between are home matches with Thompson Valley (Thursday) and Windsor (next Monday).

Soccer teams continue to work through the early part of their schedule and Colorado Preps will provide coverage with a regular weekly notebook on the sport. Here’s a look at the top teams in each region with a check on their early season results and top matchups upcoming in the next week.

WESTERN SLOPE

Most of the Western Slope teams are off tonight but several important matches are set for later this week. Let’s begin in the 3A ranks where Coal Ridge and Hotchkiss hook up on Saturday. Coal Ridge is 4-0 on the season and the Titans have outscored those opponents 11-1. They own quality wins over Aspen and Basalt.

Hotchkiss is 4-1 on the season. After dropping their opener to the Montrose JV, the Bulldogs have won four straight. Their last match was a one-all tie against powerful Aspen. Both the Titans and Bulldogs are unbeaten in league play so the match is an important one early one. Coal Ridge is also on the pitch tomorrow against Roaring Fork.

Elsewhere in 3A, Lake County fell from the unbeaten ranks Tuesday night in a 3-1 loss to Salida. They fell to 4-1 with the loss. Salida improved to 4-1 with the win. Their only loss is against Steamboat Springs last Saturday. The Spartans will host James Irwin tomorrow.

In Class 4A, Steamboat Springs may have the most difficult slate this week. They host Moffat County tomorrow and then face Battle Mountain on Saturday. Both those teams are unbeaten on the season so early control of the Western Slope chase is on the line. Battle Mountain is 3-0 and has already won two league matches against Palisade and Eagle Valley.

Moffat County appears to be very powerful offensively. They’ve scored at least four goals in each of their four wins. Their match with Steamboat tomorrow is their league opener.

In the Southwestern League, Montrose and Grand Junction are the only two teams with winning records at this point. Both are 2-1. Montrose is coming off a 3-1 league win over Fruita Monument last Saturday. They’ll host Durango and Montezuma Cortez this weekend. Grand Junction lost to Moffat County 6-2 last Saturday. They opened league last night against Fruita Monument in a match that ended in a scoreless tie.

METRO

Let’s first check in on the defending state champions. Returning 5A champ Fort Collins has opened the season at 2-2. The losses are by one goal apiece to powerful Broomfield and Mountain View who are both unbeaten on the season. In Class 4A, Niwot has started the season at just 1-2. Offense has been their issue. The Cougars opened by beating Fossil Ridge one-nill but have been shut out by both Rocky Mountain and Cheyenne Mountain. 3A defending champ Colorado Springs Christian has won their first two matches. They’ve outscored Pine Creek and Peak to Peak by a combined 12-1 score. Their next three opponents are unbeaten including a nice pairing with Kent Denver tomorrow.

The best match of the night (Wednesday) takes place between Northridge and Windsor. Each team is 4-0 overall and 3-0 inside the Tri Valley. Both teams have displayed explosive offenses. Northridge has scored 29 goals in four matches including a 5-0 drubbing of Fort Morgan on Monday. Windsor has found the net 20 times in their four wins and has given up only two goals over their last three matches.

Broomfield appears to have another strong team. The Eagles are 4-0 and all four wins are against 5A foes. That includes a season opening 3-2 win over defending champion Fort Collins. Broomfield is at Grandview tomorrow and opens league play at Silver Creek a week from Saturday.

In the South Central, Pueblo South and Canon City hook up for the first of two meetings next Tuesday. Both are 2-0 in league play and appear to be the cream of the crop. South has won their two league matches by a combined 14-0 score. Canon City beat Pueblo Central 9-0 and Pueblo East 9-4 in league play. Both are in action one time before their head to head clash next week. South faces Centennial tomorrow – Canon City plays Pueblo County on Saturday.

In the 5A Colorado Springs Metro, Air Academy is 5-0 and Cheyenne Mountain 3-0. The Kadets blasted Coronado 7-0 last night and now has a 21 goal margin over their opponents. The Indians have yet to allow a goal and blasted Wasson 10-nil in their last outing.

Mountain Vista and Rocky Mountain are two other teams to keep an eye on. Mountain Vista blanked Ponderosa 3-0 last night and also owns the victory we already mentioned over Fort Collins. Rocky Mountain opened 3-0 but was surprised by Bear Creek 2-1 last night. They host Mountain Range tomorrow.

EASTERN PLAINS

There is not a large contingent of programs on the Eastern Plains and most of them that do compete in soccer have struggled early on. Lamar is one exception. The Savages are off to a 2-1-1 start. After dropping a tight battle against a solid Manitou Springs bunch, Lamar won two straight by downing Vista Ridge (3-1) and Colorado Springs School (6-0). Each of those opponents has yet to win a game but as the Savages build their program, they need success at any level. Their most recent contest resulted in a 1-1 tie with Vanguard.

The Savages next have a rematch at home against Colorado Springs School. That match is set for this Saturday. Tougher opponents are waiting in coming weeks including a battle at Salida (4-1) on September 25th.

Fort Morgan is coming off two straight playoff appearances but after losing their all time leading scorer Pepe Gallarza, the Mustangs have struggled offensively this season. They’ve managed just four goals in five matches. Before getting blown out by Northridge on Monday, the Mustangs had been involved in four straight one goal contests. Their lone win came against Greeley Central (2-1) on September 4th.

The Mustangs face arch-rival Sterling tomorrow (Thursday) and then start a brutal stretch with consecutive matches against Skyline, Thompson Valley and Windsor. Those three teams are a combined 7-3.
