League play is already underway on the softball diamond and that trend continues on several fronts today. There are also quite a few non-conference battles between longtime rivals.

Fresh off finishing second to defending state champion Valley at the 3A Invitational last weekend in Aurora, Lamar heads north to Burlington. The Savages went 4-1 at the tournament and avenged an early season loss by downing Rocky Ford 2-0 in the semi-finals. Today’s game will serve as the season opener for Burlington who will also visit Wray for two games on Saturday.

Limon is another team along I-70 that will open their season this afternoon. They’ll be at Strasburg who has scored 27 runs in wins over Faith Christian, Elizabeth and Strasburg. Defending 3A state champion Holy Family goes to Peak to Peak. It should be an easy win for the Tigers (1-1). Peak to Peak (1-5) has surrendered 60 runs in their last five games.

In Class 4A, there’s a full state of conference games inside the Northern and South Central. Up North, Longmont visits cross-town rival Skyline, Broomfield plays host to Greeley Central, Centaurus goes to Mountain View and Niwot is at Thompson Valley. Silver Creek, Broomfield and Niwot are all out of the gate at 2-0 through the first week of action.

Pueblo South is 2-0 in league play with Pueblo East and Canon City right behind at 1-0. One of those early conference unbeatens will fall off the pace today when Pueblo South entertains Canon City. Pueblo East will stay up with the winner if they take out Pueblo Central.

In non-league play, Falcon is off to a hot start winning three games while outscoring opponents 44-11. They look to keep the bats going on the road to Cheyenne Mountain this afternoon. The Indians have just one game under their belt, a narrow 7-6 win over Palmer last Wednesday.

Three league contests are on tap today inside the 5A Centennial. The best features Cherokee Trail at Grandview. Mullen also goes to Smoky Hill and Overland is at Eaglecrest. Grandview (3-0) and Cherokee Trail (2-0) are tied with Arapahoe for the early conference lead. Mullen (2-1) is just a game back.

A complete look at the schedule with results can be seen on our second website at www.coloradoscores.com. Results can be texted to 970.380.7737 or emailed to kevin@coloradopreps.com.

COURTESY OF CHRIS DAY
SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR – ADAMS STATE

ALAMOSA, Colo.- Approximately 250 of the state’s best high school seniors in six different sports will call Adams State College’s athletic facilities and resident halls home in early June as the college has been selected to host the 2011 Colorado High School Coaches Association’s All-State games.

The CHSCA Board of Directors recently selected ASC to host the event that includes all-classification high school all-star games in the sports of boys and girls basketball, football, softball, volleyball and wrestling.

Practices and games run throughout the week of June 7-11.

A Friday night (June 10) banquet for approximately 700 people also highlights the week’s activities and will feature the awarding of the prestigious Fred Steinmark Award to one female and one male high school scholar athlete.

“Adams State College is very proud of the opportunity to be hosting the CHSCA All-State Games,” Director of Athletics Larry Mortensen said.

“This presents a tremendous opportunity for Adams State College, the community of Alamosa and the entire San Luis Valley to put on a first class event and to showcase our new athletic facilities and renovated campus to Colorado coaches, high school participants and their parents,” he continued.

“Hosting this event is a big win for Alamosa and San Luis Valley businesses,” Mortensen also said while noting the influx of visitors to the area that the event will bring.

“This will have a huge economic impact on Alamosa and the entire San Luis Valley and I wish to commend Mortensen and ASC for making this happen,” said Keith Cerny, president of the ASC Grizzly Club and publisher of the Valley Courier.

“We put feelers out to a number of different campuses in the state,” said CHSCA Executive Director John Burke. “Larry Mortensen (ASC’s Director of Athletics) and his staff did a great job at putting together a proposal.”

The 2011 event will mark the organization’s 55th All-State games, the flagship event of the organization, made up of approximately 2,500 high school coaches each year. The games have been held in Greeley at the University of Northern Colorado for the last few years, but have been held at various venues around the state based on the needs of CHSCA at the time, Burke noted.

“There’s a lot of people excited about this,” said CHSCA Past President Dave Forster, a 1981 ASC graduate and the girls basketball coach at Centauri High School in La Jara. “It was time for a change and Adams State did a really good job of putting together a very competitive bid,” Forster continued.

The ASC campus facilities have undergone a remarkable facelift in the past two years, highlighted by a $12 million renovation to Plachy Hall, which will host the basketball, volleyball and wrestling events, and the construction of a one-of-a-kind combined stadium and apartment-style student housing unit. Features of Rex Stadium, which will host the football game, will include a video scoreboard, sports turf field, chair-backed seats, a new multiple-booth press box and a new environment-controlled booster box, great for group parties.

Construction of a new sports turf softball field is also well underway in time for the Grizzlies’ upcoming 2011 season and a new soccer and lacrosse field, also made of sports turf, was recently completed and will be the home of the new Grizzly men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, who both begin NCAA Division II play this spring. The Grizzly women’s and men’s soccer programs, started in 2002 and 2009, respectively, have also already used the field for numerous practices and will begin official completion on it in the fall.

“I had come to Alamosa and ASC last summer to play in the football program’s golf tournament and I was amazed at how much the facilities had improved. Adams State has some outstanding facilities and we are looking forward to a first-class event,” Burke continued.

ColoradoPreps.com

The easy way out would be to predict that Legacy and Wheat Ridge will repeat as softball champions in Class 5A and 4A. It also would be the most intelligent prognosis based on the way the two bashed their way through the regular season, with Legacy entering the state tournament (Friday and Saturday, Aurora Sports Park) with a 21-0 mark and Wheat Ridge at 20-1.

But before we crown the two, let’s take a look at prospective challengers in all three classifications, while noting Berthoud earned the No. 1 seed in 3A.

Class 5A

Beyond the Lightning, two teams from the Southwestern League (Fruita Monument and Grand Junction Central) and two from the Continental League (Rock Canyon and Mountain Vista) stand out as the top challengers.

Fruita has lost only twice and employs a dual pitching rotation with Erica Chridon (10-1) and Mallory Paulson (9-1). Central (G.J.) has big-time pop in the lineup from Jessica Romine and Mikayla Duffy (12 home runs apiece) and Danielle Romine (10). Duffy also is the standout pitcher who led the Warriors to the semifinals last season, where they were edged by Ralston Valley. (And speaking of Ralston Valley, don’t count out the Mustangs, who have won 11 of 12 after a 4-5 start).

Second-seeded Fruita, though, has a tough opening draw in Pomona, which nearly upset Legacy in regionals. No. 7 Central (G.J.) also opens with a Jefferson County League foe in No. 10 Standley Lake.

Rock Canyon and Mountain Vista were the top teams in the Continental League, with Rock Canyon a surprise champ in a league that also includes state entrants Ponderosa, Highlands Ranch and Douglas County. The Jaguars have thrived behind the pitching of Melanie White, who is 12-4 with 144 strikeouts in 102 innings.

“Everyone is embracing the moment, embracing how we’ve been able to make it this far,” Rock Canyon coach Debbie Kortbawi said. “It’s a total, total team thing.”

Mountain Vista (18-3), the No. 4 seed, engages in one of the most compelling first-round games as the Golden Eagles take on Fort Collins (18-3). Another first-round gem is Highlands Ranch against 2009 quarterfinalist Brighton, an 8 vs. 9 matchup.

Also of interest will be witnessing how well Colorado Springs-based Liberty (20-1) maintains its success against top-notch competition. The sixth-seeded Lancers open with Loveland.

Class 4A

While Wheat Ridge aims for its threepeat – and is a solid bet to do so with all-everything slugger and pitcher Elle Madsen – a handful of other squads give reason to see how things shake out.

Most notably, Erie is aiming for its 13th consecutive title-game appearance and pitcher Mariah Bledsoe her fourth straight clinching win (no one has ever accomplished that feat). The Tigers are up from 4A, and the elevated competition means the Tigers merely are among the fray of title hopefuls.

“There’s no reason Wheat Ridge shouldn’t be the favorite; they’ve earned it,” Erie coach Bob Bledsoe said. “I was even surprised when they began the year ranked No. 2 behind D’Eveyln, because until D’Evelyn wins it all . . . ”

D’Evelyn nearly won it all last season, but a few slipups in the latter stages allowed Wheat Ridge to overthrow the Jeffco rivals for the crown. D’Evelyn currently is as hot as any team, as the No. 2 Jaguars are riding a 12-game winning streak.

Similar to Liberty in 5A, it will be interesting to see if No. 3 Pueblo East and No. 4 Lewis-Palmer continue to roll after escaping league play. And don’t count out Northern League entrants Silver Creek and Mountain View, with each team coming off a stellar campaign.

Also, a can’t-miss first-round game: Windsor vs. Mullen. It’s a shame one of these perennial challengers will be gone before the quarterfinals.

Class 3A

Unlike the larger classifications, no defined favorite resides here. Berthoud, behind slugging senior Danielle Wikre (.559, seven home runs, 40 RBI) has had a strong season after a move down from 4A, but second-seeded Holy Family might have the best shot. The Tigers have seven losses, but only one was to a 3A opponent as Glen Ramos and company beefed up their schedule.

Preseason No. 1 Valley also is a favorite behind the Hutton sisters Taylor and Haley, but the Vikings stumbled against Platte Valley in districts and fell to a No. 7 seed, meaning they might square off against Holy Family in the second round.

Rocky Ford and Limon each enter 18-2, but each is considered untested. The same can’t be said of the two Plattes, Platte Valley and Platte Canyon. Platte Valley, the fifth seed, was among the challengers in the Patriot League while No. 6 Platte Canyon made its living in the rigorous Metro League. Another set of sisters, Jessie and Jennie Marshall, lead the Huskies.

Softball state tournament brackets (Friday and Saturday at Aurora Sports Park)
