CLASS 2A GIRLS STATE QUARTERFINAL RECAPS

The Loveland Events Center is the new location for the Class 2A girls’ state basketball tournament and eight teams converge there for the tournament.  First round games take place on Thursday with semifinals on Friday and the championship round on Saturday.  Colorado Preps will provide complete coverage of all games through score updates and game recaps.

​YUMA TOPS IGNACIO 43-18

​A game that started out looking like we might have an upset on our hands, quickly turned in favor of the Lady Indians as they defeat #8 Ignacio 43-18. After the first quarter we were all tied at 7. Then came the 2nd and 3rd quarters where the score quickly swung into Yuma's favor.

The Bobcats could only muster 5 points through the two quarters, while Yuma put up 21. Free throw shooting came into play as it always does here in the postseason. Yuma was 13 of 18 from the charity stripe, Ignacio was 5 of 7. Leading scorer for Yuma was Cody Robinson as she poured in 19. Leading the way for Ignacio was Alejandra Lujan who had 8.

#1 Yuma now advances to the semifinals tomororw at 7pm. Ignacio falls to the consolation semifinal which is at

 

WRAY BLOWS AWAY SIMLA​

​It was over from the get go. Simla could never settle in, and Wray took advantage of it winning 66-28. The Eagles got out early and didn't look back. It was a running game for the Eagles as the Cubs could not get the ball in the hoop. Heading into halftime it was 32-13, and things got worse for Simla in the second half.

The lid on the bucket stayed on for the Cubs as they could not buy a basket. Wray was just having their way and it was ugly. Shot after shot went in for the Eagles. It was a blowout on the free throw side of things as well. Wray shot 18 of 25. While Simla shot 1 of 6. Leading the scoring for the Eagles was Morgan Smith who poured in 18. Leading scorer for the Cubs was Jerraldawn Rector with 6.

Wray now moves on to play Yuma in the championship semifinal tomorrow at 7:00pm. Simla will play Ignacio in the consolation semifinal at 8:45am. Both games are at the Budweiser Event Center.

 

​Tigers Crush Bulldogs

​It had all the makings of another classic but Del Norte had other plans as they defeat Haxtun 59-44. After one quarter it was a 15-12 ballgame. It was the same distance between the teams at the half as they traded baskets throuought the second quarter. Del Norte took the 31-28 lead into halftime.

Then the Tigers went on a 14-4 run which led to the Tigers outscoring the Bulldogs 16-8 in the third quarter. And it was pretty much over from there Del Norte owned the free throw line tonight as they made 12 of 16. Haxtun made 6 of 15. Leading the Tigers was Bailey Jones who poured in 27 points. Dawson Knode added 17 for the Bulldogs.

Del Norte now advances to the championship semifinal tomorrow night at 4:00pm. Haxtun will play in the consolation semifinal at 11:45. Both games are at the Budweiser Event Center.

 

​Lions Win Streak Snapped By Eagles

​Another game that looked like it was bound for an upset, quickly was turned in favor of the higher seed as the Paonia Eagles defeat the Swink Lions 55-44. After one quarter it was 12-11 in favor of the Eagles. The second quarter was a different story as the Lions outscored Paonia 15-12 to take a 26-24 lead into the locker room.

Paonia then came out and started the second half on a 9-0 run. Swink did weather the storm and got the lead down to 2 before Paonia once again opened it up. In the fourth quarter, Swink got the lead three times. It was free throw shooting which again doomed the losing team. The Eagles were 13 of 19 from the stripe as Swink was 9 of 13. Leading the Eagles in scoring was Emily Pieper who poured in 16. It was Brianna Denton as the high point scorer for Swink as she tallied 16 as well.

Paonia will now play in the championship semifinal tomorrow at 4pm. Swink falls to the consolation semifinal which is at 11:15am.
