HOLLY PRESSURE TOO MUCH FOR OURAY, 63-24
Early in the third quarter, Holly broke out its full court pressure and it got a stagnant Wildcat offense rolling. Over the final 16 minutes and 15 seconds of the game, Holly outscored Ouray 49-5 to run away with the 63-24 victory. In the rematch of last year's third place game, Yaniel Vidal led all scorers with 18 points, but it was reserve guard Chandler Rushton who helped provide the spark. The senior hit four three-pointers and pumped in 14 points. Ravi Inmon had 11 for the Trojans.
Ouray slides into tomorrow's 10:15 am consolation semifinal. Holly is into the championship semifinals for the third straight year. The Wildcats will play at 5:30 pm on Friday.
KIT CARSON ESCAPES LONGMONT CHRISTIAN 52-47
After building a 13-point first half lead, Kit Carson needed some late free throws to survive its first round match-up with Longmont Christian, 52-47. The Warriors cut it to one point, 41-40, but the Wildcats combined to hit 11 of 12 free throws to seal the deal. Brad Johnson led the way with 23 points and Jaxon Crawford added 22. Dominic Puchino had 21 for Longmont Christian.
Kit Carson will see a familiar face in the 5:30 pm semifinals, as the Wildcats meet up with Holly for the third time this season. Holly won both previous match-ups. Longmont Christian will look to bounce back in its 10:15 am consolation semifinal against Ouray.
KING, WILLIAMS CARRY FLEMING PAST FRONT RANGE BAPTIST 45-42
Facing an 11-point deficit late in the first half, defending champion Fleming finished the half on an 8-0 run. Freshman Brandon Williams got the Wildcats their first lead with back to back buckets in the third and, and Jaxon King took over in the fourth, as Fleming downed Front Range Baptist 45-42. King scored eight of his game-high 18 in the final frame, and the former player of the year stuffed a potential game-tying three at the buzzer to preserve the victory. Williams finished with eight off the bench. Noah Stein led the Falcons with 15, while Adam Poole and Deric Woods each added 10.
Fleming is back in the Final Four, where the Wildcats will face #2 Cheyenne Wells. Front Range Baptist squares off with Creede/Lake City in the consolation semifinals.
COLD SPELL DOOMS CREEDE AGAINST CHEYENNE WELLS 59-34
A three-point play by Isaac Borchers tied the game at five early in the first quarter, but Creede/Lake City did not have much to cheer about after that. Cheyenne Wells outscored the Miners 29-10 the rest of the half and never looked back in the 59-34 victory. Matt Roberts used the large margin to get his entire roster state experience in the second half, but it was seniors Peyton Halde and Kendall Pelton who did most of the damage. Halde had 16 points for the Tigers and Pelton added 14. Borchers finished with 12 for Creede, but only two in the second half.
Creede/Lake City slides into the consolation bracket, where the Miners will face the loser of the game between Fleming and Front Range Baptist. The winner of that late contest will move into the Final Four and square off with Cheyenne Wells.
