HOLLY BEATS KIT CARSON IN TRIPLE OT 47-44
Having played two close games during the season, Holly and Kit Carson saved the best for last. Knotted at the end of the first half and regulation, the two sets of Wildcats would need three overtimes to decide a winner. Holly elected to take the air out of the ball in the third OT and Kit Carson decided to allow that to happen. As the clock wound down, Yaniel Vidal found Sigi Avalos in the corner and Avalos beat the clock, and Kit Carson, with a three-pointer at the horn. It was the 15th made three-point basket between the two, including a 30-footer by Kit Carson's Jaxon Crawford at the end of the third quarter. Crawford had 19 for Kit Carson, while Vidal had 20 to lead Holly.
Kit Carson will try to shake off the disappointing finish when the Wildcats face Fleming for third place. Holly is in the title game for the second time in three years. They will square off with Cheyenne Wells for the crown.
CHEYENNE WELLS ENDS FLEMING'S TITLE REIGN 49-34
Fleming was looking to make a third straight trip to the title game and possibly defend its championship from last year. Cheyenne Wells had other ideas, downing the Wildcats 49-34 behind a strong effort from Peyton Halde. The senior post had 12 points for the Tigers, and his presence in the paint forced the Wildcats to be more perimeter focused on offense. Matthew Tanner hit four three-pointers for Fleming and scored a game-high 19 points, but the rest of the team struggled to find a rhythm. Kendall Pelton, who had an off night himself, helped put the game away by converting eight straight free throws down the stretch.
Fleming can still earn hardware, with a third place game against Kit Carson. Cheyenne Wells will be looking to avenge a 60-50 loss to Holly when they meet in the championship game.
POST PLAY LEADS LONGMONT CHRISTIAN PAST OURAY 58-47
Dominic Puchino scored 11 of his team-high 20 points in the third quarter as Longmont Christian eliminated Ouray in the consolation semifinals, 58-47. The 6'6” freshman did most of his damage in the paint, opening the perimeter for the Warriors, who hit six three-point hoops in the game, four by older brother Luke. The three-point shot kept Ouray in the game, with Ravi Inmon draining five for the Trojans. Inmon finished with 21 points in the contest.
After reaching the third place game last year, Ouray finishes this season at 14-10. Longmont Christian will attempt to take home the consolation championship in its first ever tournament appearance.
CREEDE/LAKE CITY DROPS FRONT RANGE BAPTIST 51-41
Free throws on the opening possession gave Front Range Baptist a quick 2-0 lead, but Creede/Lake City responded with a three-point hoop and the Miners would not tail again, as they defeated the Falcons 51-41. Creede/Lake City would push the lead to a dozen on several occasions, only to see Front Range Baptist hang around with little spurts of its own. In the final stretch, the Falcons were unable to mount a last run, and saw their season come to a close. Isaac Borchers had 17 points in the victorious effort and Casper Freedle added 13. Austin Bates led the Falcons with 13 and Deric Woods chipped in 12.
Front Range Baptist finishes the season with a 20-5 mark. Creede/Lake City, the #7 seed, will play #5 Longmont Christian for the consolation championship on Saturday morning.
