Paonia and Wray square off for the 2A girls’ basketball state championship on Saturday and hardware will also be handed out in two earlier games.

7:00pm: #2 Paonia vs #4 Wray
PAONIA SITS ON TOP OF 2A GIRLS
On Saturday night the Paonia Lady Eagles took the step up from last year and claimed the 2A title with a 59-42 victory over Wray. The Eagles took second to Yuma last year. It was a tie ballgame at 13 after one with a half court shot going in at the buzzer for Paonia. The Eagles were 5 of 10 from the free throw line, while Wray was just 3 of 7.
The second half belong to Paonia as they got an early 9-0 run and from there it was smooth sailing to the title. Wray couldn ever get anything going on offense. Paonia looked like a well oiled machine. At one point they were up 23. Leading Paonia in scoring was McKenna Hartigan with 18 points. Leading the way for Wray was Morgan Smith who poured in 28.
Paonia finishes and undefeated season at 25-0. Wray finishes at 19-7
12:00pm: #3 Del Norte vs #1 Yuma
INDIANS BOUNCE BACK TO CLAIM 3RD
The Yuma Indians defeated the Del Norte Tigers 46-40. Yuma was in another dog fight. After one the Indians only led by 3 at 10-7. Only 2 free throws were attempted in the first, both by Yuma, both missed.Both teams went cold to begin the second quarter. Both teams unable to find the basket. Only 9 points were scored between both teams. Only 11 team fouls were called all half. At the line it was Yuma going 0 for 3 and Del Norte 0 for 2, At the half Yuma had the lead at 17-10.
The second half belonged to Yuma as they were on a path to avenge their loss last night against Wray. A 9-2 run to open the half and Yuma really never looked back. Del Norte did get close on a number of occasions but couldn't get the buckets they needed to top #1 Yuma. Yuma has now finished in the top-3 in the past 5 state tournament.s
Yuma claims the 3rd place trophy and ends with an overall record of 22-4. Del Norte claims 4th and finishes 22-4 overall.
9:00am: #5 Simla vs #6 Haxtun
BULLDOGS FINISH SEASON WITH 5TH PLACE
Haxtun defeated Simla in the 5th place game 59-43. It looked like a shootout was bound to happen early. Both teams exchanged baskets early. A three late in the 2nd quarter gave Haxtun a little cushion. It was 29-25 Haxtun at the half. Both teams shot exceptionally well from the field. Turnovers did prove costly for Simla in the first half.
The second half opened with Haxtun going on a 16-0 run. Simla could not seem to buy a basket in the third quarter, the Bulldogs on the other hand remained hot. Simla got as close as 12 on multiple occasions but would go cold immediately after.
Bulldogs claim 5th place here at the state tournamen and finish 21-5. Cubs take 6th and finish 19-7
