Holly picked up a road win at Cheyenne Wells earlier today but the two Eastern Colorado squads collide again on Saturday with the winner grabbing the state championship.  We’ll recap the contest and two others.

CHAMPIONSHIP

5:30pm:  #1 Holly vs #2 Cheyenne Wells

​HOLLY STAGES COMEBACK TO WIN STATE TITLE

​The Holly Wildcats overcame a 16 point halftime deficit to claim the 1A Boys State Title. The Cheyenne Wells Tigers owned the first 16 minutes of the ballgame. As they got out to a 13-3 lead and led the Wildcats 22-7 after one. After on only 9 points scored between both teams in the second quarter it was 27-11 at the half.

The second half was a complete 360 from the first. Holly came out hot and outscored Cheyenne Wells 20-3 in the 3rd quarter. The run did not stop there as Holly got out to a 31-3 run and gained the lead to never relinquish it. Holly was 16 of 24 from the stripe. Cheyenne Wells was 1 of 3 from the line. Beau Roth led the Tigers with 13 points. While Sigi Avalos added 19 for Wildcats.

Holly finishes undefeated at 24-0. Cheyenne Wells finishes 24-2.

THIRD PLACE

KIT CARSON DOWNS FLEMING 43-29 FOR THIRD PLACE

Fleming hit three three-point hoops before Kit Carson got on the board, but Jim Trahern's Wildcats would stick to their game plan and rally for a 43-29 victory to claim third place. Trailing 19-14 midway through the second quarter, Kit Carson turned to Brad Johnson, who scored 14 of his game-high 18 during an 18-2 run that gave his squad a commanding 32-21 lead in the third. Fleming only scored 10 points over the final 20 minutes of the game. Jaxon King finished his high school career with 10 points for Fleming, eight in the first half.

Kit Carson's third place finish wraps up a 19-6 season, while Fleming ends up 16-11. Both teams will lose a number of key players to graduation, including their top scorer.

FIFTH PLACE

LONGMONT CHRISTIAN EDGES CREEDE/LAKE CITY 52-47 IN CONSO CHAMPIONSHIP

In the most physical game of the tournament, Longmont Christian defeated Creede/Lake City 52-47 to claim the consolation championship. The teams were each called for 26 fouls, resulting in 72 free throw attempts. Dominic Puchino led a trio of Warriors in double figures with 16 points. Luke Puchino added 13 and Cameron Jauregui tallied 12. Casper Freedle had 14 for the Miners and Regnor VonDedenroth chipped in 11 points off the bench.

The first trip to state by Longmont Christian sees the Warriors taking home the trophy for the consolation championship, and the season ends with a 22-5 record. Creede/Lake City finishes its season at 16-8.
