BOYS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 1-22-13

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 - 9:18am

Rugged matchups in the Class 3A Metro and a nice non-conference battle in Southwest Colorado take up most of the headlines across the state tonight.  In the Metro, 6th ranked Peak to Peak and 8th ranked Colorado Academy face off for early league positioning while top ranked Kent Denver avoids looking past winless Manual to Friday’s clash with five-time state champion Faith Christian.  In the mountains, top tens Pagosa Springs and Ignacio collide for the second time.  The first meeting resulted in a 53-50 Pagosa Springs win.

Below is a list of the top games in each division and a breakdown of each.  In addition to the games mentioned in the lead, there are quite a few matchups that will affect the top spot in several conferences. Results can be sent to Colorado Preps by text to either 970.380.7737 or 970.380.7738 or by email to kevin@coloradopreps.com.

Mountain Vista, ThunderRidge, Regis and Highlands Ranch all posted wins in Continental conference openers last Friday and all four are favored for a second league win tonight.  Mountain Vista has won 11 of their 12 games by at least 13 points and look to be unbeaten going into next Tuesday’s showdown with Regis.  Regis has won six in a row and blew past Castle View (78-21) in their league opener.  ThunderRidge recovered from a 20 point loss to Denver East two weeks by downing a very good Lincoln squad (67-64) before hammering Douglas County (79-51) in their opener.  They also face Legend on Friday so the Raiders have plenty of work to do on the slate this week.  Highlands Ranch has won five in a row, a streak that includes wins over Legend, Cherry Creek and Thomas Jefferson.  They downed Chaparral (65-55) in their conference opener last Friday.  Monarch used a two point win over Fairview last week to gain sole possession of first place in the Front Range.  They look to stay there with a home win over Poudre.  Fairview and Fossil Ridge also square off in an important game tonight.  The Knights and Sabercats are tied with Loveland for second place one game back of the Coyotes.

FINAL:  Elizabeth beat Skyview 71-59

Broomfield opens play tonight with a one game edge on Greeley Central and Thompson Valley in the Northern league.  The Eagles used a late jumper to beat Thompson Valley last Friday and now look to beat another top contender this evening.  Central (7-6) has won four of five but the one loss in that stretch came against Thompson Valley by 18 points.  The margin of victory against Thompson Valley indicates Broomfield should get the win tonight.  Another first versus second battle takes place in the Pikes Peak as 5th ranked Sand Creek entertains Discovery Canyon.  Sand Creek is tied with Lewis Palmer for the conference lead with Discovery Canyon a game back.  The Thunder did not play well in their first matchup against a top ten team falling to Lewis Palmer by 29 points for their only loss.  Sand Creek picked up a quality win over Cheyenne Mountain (59-49) last week and is getting nearly 16 points a game from senior Josh Smith.  He’s been in double figures in all 11 games and netted 14 in the win over Cheyenne Mountain.  Wasson and Widefield is a third one-two battle.  The Thunderbirds share the CS Metro lead with Sierra but Widefield is one game back.  Wasson has won seven straight and picked up two league wins by a combined 43 points last week.  Widefield also hosts Sierra on Friday so they will be the league leaders if they win both.  A fourth one-two encounter takes place on the Western Slope between Delta and Palisade.  Palisade is alone in first and Delta is tied with Eagle Valley in second one game back.  This is the first meeting for Palisade for either of the two second place teams.  They will pay both twice before the end of the season.  With four teams tied for first, the Tri Valley race is the most congested at this point.  Frederick, Roosevelt, Mead and Windsor (all 4-1) all share the lead.  At least one will fall off the pace when Frederick visits Roosevelt tonight.

CLASS 3A

FINAL:  #1 Kent Denver beat Manual 53-29

FINAL:  #2 Brush beat Fort Morgan 58-45

FINAL:  #3 Pagosa Springs beat #8 Ignacio (2A) 63-49

FINAL:  #4 Colorado Springs Christian beat Fountain Valley 76-39

FINAL:  #8 Colorado Academy beat #6 Peak to Peak 86-69

FINAL:  #7 Roaring Fork beat Coal Ridge 57-35

FINAL:  #9 Alamosa beat Salida 83-34

FINAL:  University beat Estes Park 85-76

FINAL:  Frontier Academy beat Strasburg 59-54

FINAL:  Jefferson beat Bennett 57-45

FINAL:  Pinnacle beat Lake County 59-38

FINAL:  Faith Christian beat Machebeuf 54-47

FINAL:  Denver Science beat Clear Creek 67-63

James Irwin at Ellicott

FINAL:  Manitou Springs beat Classical Academy 50-36

FINAL:  Buena Vista beat Florence 51-41

The Metro conference again takes center stage as Peak to Peak and Colorado Academy square off in a top ten battle.  Colorado Academy fell to Jefferson Academy (60-41) last week so the Mustangs can ill afford another league setback this early in the campaign.  It would drop them two games off the pace.  Peak to Peak also meets 5th ranked Holy Family on Friday so it’s the beginning of a key stretch tonight.  Kent Denver is coming off two high quality wins over Machebeuf and Lutheran last week.  They look to keep a share of the league lead against winless Manual.  Despite a winless record, Manual is a talented club that can’t be overlooked especially since the Sun Devils meet long-time rival Faith Christian on Friday.  In the Tri Peaks West, Colorado Springs Christian is expected to keep their one game edge on Manitou Springs and Classical Academy.  The Lions, who have already beaten both the Mustangs and Titans once this season, have won all four games since Christmas by double digits.  Manitou Springs and Classical Academy square off for second place.  Over in the Eastern division, James Irwin needs a road win at Ellicott to keep a share of the league lead.  They share the Tri Peaks East lead with Dolores Huerta and La Junta (all one loss).  Roaring Fork seeks a 9th straight win.  The Rams have sole possession of first place in the Western Slope.  Sterling is unbeaten against 3A teams this year.  The Tigers scored a huge conference road win at Eaton last Friday and look to stay unbeaten in the Patriot by downing Highland.  The Huskies have not played the same level of schedule as the Tigers but open the night with a share of first place after beating Lyons last Tuesday.  Pagosa Springs and Alamosa share the Intermountain lead but both are involved in non-league play tonight.  The Pirates have the tougher assignment facing a 2A team they edged by just three points (53-50) before Christmas.  Pagosa senior Kain Lucero is arguably the best point guard in Class 3A and he scored 19 points in the first matchup including four three pointers.  Dean Hampton added 13.  Ignacio was led by Adison Jones (14), Wyatt Hayes (11) and Justin Carver (10).  Hayes is just a freshman but is averaging nearly 9 points and 4 assists for the Bobcats.  Brush steps on the court for the first time this year following a loss.  They were edged at 2A power Yuma (55-49) last night but should have little trouble getting fired against their in-county rival.  The Beetdiggers won the first meeting by 20 (63-43) as nine different players scored including ten apiece from Mitch Tormohlen and Randy Baker.

CLASS 2A

FINAL:  #3 Lutheran beat Jefferson Academy 51-36

FINAL:  #4 Resurrection Christian beat #10 Heritage Christian 63-55

FINAL:  #8 Haxtun beat Wray 49-31

FINAL:  Liberty Common beat Denver Academy 66-13

The brutal conference slate continues for 3rd ranked Lutheran as the Lions face a Jefferson Academy team that handed Colorado Academy their first loss of the season last week.  The Lions were beaten by both Holy Family and Kent Denver last week so they need a win to avoid a 0-3 league start.  The game is also the third of seven straight against a 3A opponent.  Resurrection Christian (2-0) and Heritage Christian (2-0) are two of three league unbeaten in the Mile High conference.  Both are tied with defending state champion Denver Christian (3-0) for the top spot.  Resurrection has won five straight since suffering three straight losses to Yuma, Estes Park and Shining Mountain before Christmas.  They blasted Alexander Dawson (55-24) in their last game action.  Wyatt Simon (15.3) paces four double figure scores for the Cougars who also get scoring from Brock Buxman (12.3), Luke Mondt (10.9) and Jake Lohr (10.0).  Heritage Christian is coming off two easy league wins last week downing Front Range Christian (60-34) and Union Colony (63-15).  They also visit Denver Christian on Friday so they may know their conference finish by the end of the week.  The Eagles have three double digit scorers with Matthew McGinley (17.7) topping the list.  Ryan Hurley (15.2) and Joel Barreras (13.7) can also score in bunches.  Those three combined for a whopping 85 points in the triple overtime win at Estes Park on January 8th.

CLASS 1A

FINAL:  #2 Shining Mountain beat Jim Elliot 74-38

FINAL:  #3 Caliche beat Peetz 79-62

FINAL:  Stratton beat #4 Hi Plains 58-57

FINAL:  Wallace County KS beat #5 Cheyenne Wells 75-67 (OT)

FINAL:  Kiowa beat #9 Deer Trail 55-54

FINAL:  Pawnee beat Briggsdale 80-44

FINAL:  Community Christian beat Rocky Mountain Lutheran 63-33

The first time Caliche and Peetz met this year resulted in a 23  point win over the Buffs but don’t be surprised if tonight’s game is much closer.  The Bulldogs are below five hundred for the season (4-6) but have been in almost every game this year including a hard fought 68-64 loss to Fleming last Friday.  They also own a nice win over a Prairie team that was ranked 10th last week.  Junior Josh Fiscus paces Peetz with 20 points per game and scored 31 in the win over Prairie.  He dropped in 24 against Fleming.  Caliche has won six in a row and is coming off a league opening 54-39 win at Wray last Friday.  They also host Fleming on Friday so it shapes up as a difficult week for the four-time defending state champion.  Shining Mountain (11-0) made a huge statement by controlling 2A top ten Haxtun last Saturday.  They return to league play and should have little trouble getting past Jim Elliot tonight.  For the Lions, it will be their final tune-up before challenging 3A #1 Kent Denver next Tuesday.  Hi Plains and Stratton should be very familiar with one another.  The Patriots of course are coached by Dave Sheffield while Stratton is under the direction of one of his former players in Tyson Bancroft.  Don’t be surprised the plays from both ends look similar.  Stratton has won two straight since back-to-back losses to Akron and Burlington.  They also battle Otis on Friday so this week will give the Eagles a strong indication of how they stack up against top ten opponents.  Cheyenne Wells probably receives the least attention of any unbeaten squad.  The guard tandem of Matthew Sanders (17.6) and Matt Brown (12.9) continue to score despite drawing plenty of attention from defenses.  Tonight they line up against a Sharon Springs KS team that routinely features plenty of talent.  Deer Trail looks to end a recent slide of two straight losses.  They fell to Otis (56-49) in overtime last week which followed up a stunning loss at Burlington.  They would like a win this evening to gain a momentum for their Thursday battle with 2nd ranked Limon (2A).  Pawnee also looks to end a two game slide against their next door 1A neighbor.  Tonight’s game is the first of three straight at home for the Coyotes who look to rebound from losses to Otis and Prairie over the past ten days.

Was at the pagosa/Ignacio game and a lack of an inside presence really hurt Ignacio. Ignacio got blasted on the boards and shots that fell in the first half didn't fall in the second. IHS lived and died by the 3. Lucero is as advertised.
