BOYS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 1-24-13

Thursday, January 24, 2013 - 3:30pm

At this point of the season, most of the league action is relegated to Tuesday, Friday and Saturday but there are a few games on the schedule impacting first place in a couple of conferences.  There’s also a top ten battle inside the Union Pacific featuring top ranked Limon (2A) and 9th ranked Deer Trail (1A).

Below is the look at the schedule involving ranked teams and others that involve teams in position to land a conference championship.  Final scores can be reported to Colorado Preps by text to 970.380.7737 or by email to kevin@coloradopreps.com.

CLASS 5A

FINAL:  #9 Monarch beat Greeley West 60-52

FINAL:  Fairview beat Loveland 56-45

FINAL:  Fossil Ridge beat Legacy 69-39

Lincoln at Kennedy

FINAL:  Fort Collins beat Horizon 61-44

Monarch’s narrow win over Poudre (57-54) on Tuesday kept the Coyotes alone in first in the Front Range.  It was their sixth straight win since a two point loss to George Washington (60-58).  Junior Ben Beachamp netted 20 points in Tuesday’s win and the junior is averaging 17 points a game.  Tuesday’s effort was his fifth game of at least 20 points on the season.  The game between Loveland and Fairview will determine second place.  Both have just one loss and if Monarch stumbles against Greeley West then the winner will gain a share of the conference lead.  Loveland suffered their only league loss to Fossil Ridge (75-62) last Friday but rebounded for a 51-50 win over Mountain Range to stay a game off the pace.  Offensively, the Indians are led by 6-7 senior Conor Lang with 21 points and eight boards per game.  His season of 28 points came against both Fort Collins and Fossil Ridge.  Fairview’s lone conference loss came against Fairview by just two points (66-64) last Friday.  Since, they’ve captured a pair of double digit wins downing Boulder (76-63) and Fossil Ridge (79-69).  Because they’ve already lost to Fairview, they probably face a must win situation if they have any hope of claiming the league title.  Lincoln and Kennedy are two of the teams likely battling for second behind top ranked Denver East in the City League.

CLASS 3A

James Irwin at Trinidad

James Irwin has scored wins in seven of eight league games but that’s only been good enough to share first place with La Junta (6-1) and Dolores Huerta (5-1).  Trinidad (2-4) sits three games off the pace and is currently battling St Mary’s and Ellicott for a top four league finish.  The Jaguars won the first matchup 63-42 behind 15 points apiece from Maurice Simpson and Jesse Harding.  That total was 13 points better than the senior tandem is averaging on the season.

CLASS 2A

FINAL:  #1 Limon beat #9 Deer Trail (1A) 59-28

FINAL:  #5 Peyton beat Kiowa 54-42

FINAL:  Sierra Grande beat Fowler 63-41

FINAL:  Pikes Peak Christian beat Fountain Valley 55-26

Deer Trail has a tough assignment as they seek to snap a three game losing streak after beginning the season 9-0.  The last two setbacks have been difficult as they lost in overtime to Otis last Friday (56-49) and then couldn’t get a shot off in the final possession in a 55-54 loss to Kiowa.  Preston Turecek leads the Eagles with nearly 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists per game but he’s been limited to just 15 points per game during the losing streak.  Limon is playing their only game of the week and seeks their 12th straight win.  They’ve not been challenged since rallying from 18 points down to beat Peyton on January 12th.  Last weekend, they blew past Flagler (85-38) and Front Range Christian (60-32).  Up next are games with Simla, Stratton and Burlington over the next three weeks.
