BOYS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 2-12-13

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 4:35pm

It’s an exciting time of the season for boys basketball teams as they enter the final stretch of the regular season.  Games on the list below involve either a top ten team or include a result that directly impact the top three positions in a respective league race.  Despite the heavy schedule there’s only one game featuring two ranked teams on the same court and it can be found in the 3A Patriot where #5 Sterling entertains #6 University.  Both have championship thoughts entering the game with Sterling tied with Brush atop the standings and University in third just a game off the pace.

Final scores can be reported to Colorado Preps by text to 970.380.7737 or by email to kevin@coloradopreps.com.  We have listed the top games on this list but will post all the scores we receive throughout the night.

Key games take place in both the Patriot and Western Slope leagues as teams in the top three of each conference square off.  5th ranked Sterling gets tested at home against #6 University and the Tigers enter the game tied with Brush atop the standings but University is a game back.  The Bulldogs suffered a loss to Brush in their conference opener so they must win to stay in the championship chase.  Out west, Aspen stayed alive for the conference crown by beating Roaring Fork last week which moved them to within a game of the Rams and Moffat County.  Those two collide this weekend so if Aspen wins tonight and Moffat County then beats Roaring Fork all three teams will end the week with a piece of first place.  Sterling is unbeaten against 3A opponents this year in their first year in the division.  Senior Collin Sanger (15.4) is the lone double digit scorer for them and his nine point effort in the blowout of Strasburg last week was only the second time he’s scored less than 10 points in a game.  His season high 24 came in the December win over 4A Mountain View.  University has not lost since the Brush outing.  They’re getting 14 points a game from Eric Smith and 12 from Jesse Schwindt.  Smith was held to just three points in the loss to Brush.  The Beetdiggers will watch the game with interest but they head to Platte Valley with hopes of staying perfect in the Patriot.  Colorado Springs Christian is in the same situation inside the Tri Peaks West as they host Buena Vista.  In between, Kent Denver has a non-conference date with Englewood as they continue preparations for a conference championship deciding battle with Holy Family next week.  Holy Family barely survived for a 46-45 non-league win over Pinnacle Monday night.  Despite the loss, Pinnacle looks to stay atop the Frontier at Bennett tonight.  La Junta is tied with James Irwin (both 10-2) for the Tri Peaks East lead but Dolores Huerta is a game back in third.  The winner should avoid a first round game in the district tournament which begins next week.  Estes Park starts the night in fourth place in the Patriot and a win keeps them there but they could jump to third if University falls at Sterling.

CLASS 2A

FINAL:  #7 Ignacio beat Monticello UT 52-47

FINAL:  #9 Heritage Christian beat Denver Academy 58-35

FINAL:  Dolores beat  Norwood 60-50

FINAL:  Mancos beat Whitehorse UT 59-43

FINAL:  Sargent beat Crested Butte 52-8

FINAL:  Monte Vista beat Center 47-28

FINAL:  Denver Christian beat Nederland 72-25

FINAL:  Dayspring Christian beat Liberty Common 56-52

Neither Ignacio nor Heritage Christian expects to be pushed tonight but the game between Norwood and Dolores is an important to the top rung of the San Juan.  The two are tied with Telluride for second place behind Ignacio.  The Bears have won seven in a row since a 14 point loss to Ignacio and has two wins over Telluride but they lost the first meeting with the Mavericks (80-53).  Cody Carroll averages 12 points a game for the Bears but did not play in the first game.  He’s scored at least 20 points in three of the eight games since.  Tyler Weir also scores a dozen per game for Dolores and he went for 21 points in the first loss.  Norwood was led by junior Morgan Rummel who poured in 31 points hitting 10 of 20 shots form the field.  He added seven rebounds and four steals in the victory.  Rummel is averaging a league best 21 points a game overall.

CLASS 1A

FINAL:  #1 Fleming beat Merino 59-49

FINAL:  #2 Shining Mountain beat Community Christian 69-32

FINAL:  #5 Cheyenne Wells beat Granada 53-44

FINAL:  #9 Otis beat Lone Star 68-22

FINAL:  Byers beat Deer Trail 66-61

FINAL:  KIPP Collegiate beat Belleview Christian 55-42

FINAL:  Jim Elliot beat Gilpin County 71-35

Playing their first game as the number one team, Fleming should have little trouble with Merino.  The Wildcats enter the game with a 12-2 overall record and are unbeaten (7-0) in the North Central with a two game edge on Pawnee.  Since they play Holyoke on Saturday, Fleming actually stays away from league competition until the final week.  Shining Mountain and Community Chrisitan square off for second place behind Denver Jewish Day in the 5280 conference.  The game could serve as a preview for a future district semifinal as they could finish as the second and third seed in the bracket.  Cheyenne Wells has won three straight since that frustrating home to loss to Holly.  Granada carries a four game winning streak into the contest.  Otis needs a win over Lone Star to keep pace with Hi Plains as league unbeatens in the YWKC.

Fleming and Merino might be a pretty good game. Fleming is obviously tough, but Merino has a couple of kids who can score.
