BOYS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 2-16-13
Class 3A steps into focus today as four top ten teams from the West play important games with league championships possibly determined by the outcomes. In the games of note #8 Roaring Fork battles #9 Moffat County in the Western Slope while #7 Pagosa Springs battles Alamosa and #10 Centauri meets Bayfield inside the Intermountain. Those games and all others are listed below. You can send us final scores by text at 970.380.7737 or by email to kevin@coloradopreps.com.
Roaring Fork leads Moffat County and Aspen by one game in the league standings. A win tonight clinches at least a tie for the league championship for the Rams but a Moffat County win creates a three way tie for the conference lead with Aspen. Roaring Fork won the first meeting 57-54 and has won 12 of 13 games since. Their lone loss in that stretch came against Aspen on February 5th. Moffat County also has a league loss to Aspen and a three way tie will create league officials to dig deep into the tiebreaker to come up with the number one seed. We believe that in a three-way tie, Aspen would earn the top spot based on a point system involving point differential in the games involving the three potential league leaders.
Over in the Intermountain, Alamosa beat Pagosa Springs 45-35 in the first meeting but the Pirates still lead the conference by one game over the Moose and Centauri. Wins by Pagosa Springs and Centauri put them one-two in the conference heading into a final week showdown. Victories by Alamosa and Centauri create a three way tie between the two and Pagosa Springs as all three would have two league setbacks. Bayfield is winless in league play so they’re not expected to be a Centauri team playing good basketball right now.
There’s also an important game out West in the big school divisions as Grand Junction heads to Durango. The Tigers lead the Demons by one game in the league chase and they won the first meeting rather easily 57-38. Grand Junction still has two games on the schedule for next week but a win this afternoon clinches the title. Durango closes the regular season today as they’ll prep for the 4A District tournament next week which combines teams from the SWL and Western Slope for a three day tournament. Palisade wrapped up the WSL league crown last night with their win over Eagle Valley. The Devils and Delta are tied for second and both are in action today.
In Class 2A, #7 Ignacio heads to Telluride needing a win to stay alone in first atop the San Juan. The Bobcats (5-0) lead the Miners (5-1) and Dolores (6-1) by one game heading into the final eight days of the regular season. Dolores stayed in contention by scoring a huge win over Norwood last Tuesday. Ignacio has beaten Dolores and a win this afternoon gives them the conference championship. They close at home against Norwood next Saturday.
In the small school ranks, top ranked Fleming meets Holyoke. It’s a non-conference game between two neighboring rivals but it means nothing to conference standings or district tournament seeds. Both however would like to gain a win for momentum heading into the post-season. Hi Plains also meets Burlington in another 1A vs 2A non-league contest. Hi Plains is coming off a nice win over #5 Cheyenne Wells on Friday while Burlington suffered a frustrating two point loss at Limon in their last Saturday contest.

Telluride beat Ignacio? Can anybody Confirm?
Wow! was Seirra Grande a little upset with the loss to Sanford or what.Looks like they took it out on Cripple Creek. Looking forward to seeing you guys at Rye on Thursday, should be a good game. Went to Colo Spgs to watch the Vanguard game but didnt see much. Just going through the motions, except for about five minutes of the third quarter. Maybe they were worn out from watching the lady panthers fight it out with a good Vanguard team.
Before this game, when was the last time Yuma won at Weld Central? They never play good there and this game was no different. Good they found a way to win but man that game was ugly.
Yep it's true Ignacio lost. These kids are young and lack experience. They are NOT ready for the post season. They can't even pass the ball into the post without throwing it away. We lack a serious inside threat with no one to rebound and everyone on the team is content to hoist up 3 after 3 and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Not only that but idk how many leads have been wasted due to shot after shot being jacked up. Run a little clock and look for an easy basket. A W is a W is a W.
IV44.... have to disagree with you on this one. I always thought that ignacio went rolling thru the regualar season chalking up win after win playing teams twice that were marginal teams. Racking up wins playing teams twice like, Nucla, Mancos, Ouray, Ridgway, and Dolores each year looked great to put up big scores and winning records but then once tourney time came around, were not prepared for the physical and athletic teams that they would face in the post season. By not playing some of these teams twice, they improved strength of schedule with teams such as Shiprock, Kirtland Central, Piedra Vista, Aztec, Bloomfield(New Mexico teams) and playing traditional powers such as Pagosa Springs(twice) and Monticello, UT. Playing in these games and hostile gyms should only improve the chances that the bobcats go deep into state. I am not from Ignacio, but have a son that plays in the league and let me tell ya, the bobcats are the team we always look at, as our "measuring stick" to see where we are in pecking order. We too, hung around with ignacio this year until halftime when they turned it up a notch and put the game away in the 3rd and 4th quarters. All i know is that i am glad my kid does not play for norwood this weekend... i expect a very motivated cats squad to come out and dominate. No disrespect to any of the teams mentioned above, but there is a reason why the cats win the san juan year after year. They are just BETTER. I dont see them getting upset in regionals... and think they can make some noise at the state level.
This team is the first team to lose a home game in 4 years. The last loss was the one that started the winning streak in January of '09. It was ironically to telluride and that so happened to be the last league game Ignacio lost. This team doesn't have what it takes to make a deep run, the bench isnt deep at all and there isn't the inside presence we've had and depended on the the past 4-5 years. The sky is the limit for this team though, they are incredibly young and talented. The rest of the SJBL is gonna be in trouble, expect the cats to bring it come districts and I'd more than guarantee Coach Valdez will have them ready for the next game.
