BOYS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 2-2-13

Saturday, February 2, 2013 - 11:08am

On this Super Bowl weekend there is a lot of money being wagered on the outcome and while gambling I not allowed on the high school level, it’s a good “bet” that members of the 4A seeding committee will be on hand for two important games today.  Valor Christian goes to Sand Creek and Broomfield meets Pueblo East in two games featuring top six teams.  Committee members will use the outcomes to help layout the state tournament bracket later this month.

Below is a look at the schedule for Saturday.  Final scores can be reported to Colorado Preps by text to 970.380.7737 or by email to kevin@coloradopreps.com.

CLASS 5A

FINAL:  #1 Denver East beat Montbello 66-37

FINAL:  Doherty beat Palmer 52-41

With Denver (4A) falling to Thomas Jefferson Friday night, tonight’s battle between Denver East and Montbello will determine first place in the City League.  Both teams are unbeaten inside the conference but East remains the favorite to win tonight, grab the conference championship and at least right now also capture the state championship.  Montbello would use the quality upset to improve their seed for the state tournament bracket.  Palmer and Doherty face off to stay within sight of first place Fountain Fort Carson.  Both teams trail the Trojans by two games.

CLASS 4A

FINAL:  #4 Sand Creek beat #3 Valor Christian 76-61

FINAL:  #6 Broomfield beat #5 Pueblo East 69-64

#9 Wasson at Woodland Park

FINAL:  Coronado beat Sierra 45-42

FINAL:  Harrison beat Mesa Ridge 64-57 (OT)

FINAL:  Widefield beat Mitchell 53-32

Delta at Eagle Valley

Steamboat Springs at Rifle

Palisade at Battle Mountain

FINAL:  Frederick beat Pueblo South 74-69 (OT)

By far the most attractive schedule in any division is found here as the pair of top six non-conference games should help shape the post-season bracket.  All four are virtually shoo-ins to make the bracket so each wants the high level win to improve their place in the pairing.  Sand Creek is coming off a 42-27 conference win over Vista Ridge on Friday that kept them tied with #2 Lewis Palmer atop the Pikes Peak standings.  Those two square off for the first of two meetings on Tuesday so the next four days could tell us how far Sand Creek can go in the post-season.  Valor Christian hasn’t played since being blown out (78-47) on January 23rd.  Tonight’s game is one of just four they have remaining on the schedule.  The Pueblo East-Broomfield game should be equally compelling.  Both teams seem to be a step ahead of their conference rivals this year so their head-to-head meeting, win or lose, will be good for both teams.  Broomfield whipped Mountain View (86-53) two nights ago while Pueblo East must travel less than 24 hours after beating Pueblo South to stay atop the South Central conference.  Wasson is among the best kept secrets in Class 4A.  The T-Birds simply keep mowing down opponents to earn a two game edge in the Colorado Springs Metro.  They’re coming off a solid win over Sierra for that two game cushion earlier this week and should have little trouble against Woodland Park.  Delta and Eagle Valley battle for second place behind Palisade in the Western Slope.  The Devils fell to the first place Bulldogs on Tuesday so they need a win to stay in the league title discussion.

CLASS 3A

FINAL:  #2 Pagosa Springs beat Monte Vista 60-44

FINAL:  #3 Brush beat Estes Park 62-60

FINAL:  #6 Roaring Fork beat Olathe 64-37

FINAL:  #8 Alamosa beat Bayfield 53-43

FINAL:  #9 Sterling beat Lyons 50-29

FINAL:  James Irwin beat Lamar 46-27

FINAL:  La Junta beat Pueblo Centennial 51-41

Dolores Huerta at Trinidad

FINAL:  St Mary's beat Ellicott 78-55

FINAL:  Moffat County beat Gunnison 55-46

FINAL:  Aspen beat Cedaredge 52-40

FINAL:  Middle Park beat Bennett 71-52

FINAL:  Academy beat Platte Valley 74-56

Alamosa takes momentum from their ten point win over Pagosa Springs last night (45-35) on the road with them to Bayfield tonight.  That victory pushed the Moose into sole possession of first place in the Intermountain league and a leg up on their top rival.  Pagosa Springs looks to rebound as they’ll be favored at home against Monte Vista.  Brush and Sterling share the top spot in the Patriot.  The Beetdiggers did not play last night so they’ll be fresh for the up tempo pace offered by Estes Park.  Sterling takes to the highway after blasting Platte Valley (69-34) last night.  Third place University will watch both games with interest.  The Bulldogs are not in action tonight but rallied from 20 points down at halftime to stun Highland and stay one game back of the two leaders.  Roaring Fork beat Grand Valley Friday night for an 11th straight and a 10th in a row in the Western Slope.  They lead Moffat County by one game and Aspen by two in the league chase.  The top three teams in the Tri Peaks East are all on the road tonight.  James Irwin (9-1) sits in first place with La Junta (8-2) in second and Dolores Huerta (6-3) in third.  The Scorpions suffered a critical loss to St Mary’s last night to drop out of a second place tie.  St Mary’s (5-4) is in fourth but may be playing the best basketball of any team in the conference after beating La Junta and Dolores Huerta in back-to-back games.

FINAL:  Simla beat Colorado Springs 50-24

Miami Yoder at Kiowa

Sanford-Sargent and Hayden-Meeker continue their long-time rivalries and each outcome will have a bearing on the respective conference races.  Sanford (3-0) leads four teams including Sargent by one game in the Southern Peaks.  Sargent (5-6) is below five hundred for the season but they’re hoping their strong schedule will prep them for their battle with the Indians.  Sanford has won their three conference games by a combined 89 points including road wins at both Custer County and Del Norte.  Hayden opened the weekend tied with Meeker and Rangely atop the Western Slope.  They disposed of Rangely (49-42) last night setting up the first place this evening.  The winner is alone in first and in control of the league championship race.  Meeker has won five straight since a one point (28-27) non-league loss to Rangely.  Rocky Ford returns home to face Hoehne tonight less than 24 hours after racing past Crowley County (66-53).  The Meloneers used a 18-4 second quarter run to turn an eight point first quarter deficit into a six point halftime lead.  The win pushed them two games up on all other teams in the Santa Fe.  Hoehne has just two conference wins but nearly upset fourth place Fowler last night falling 49-48.

CLASS 1A

#2 Shining Mountain at Rocky Mountain Lutheran

FINAL:  #3 Fleming beat Briggsdale 58-43

FINAL:  #4 Caliche beat Holyoke 73-61

FINAL:  Holly beat #5 Cheyenne Wells 60-42

#8 Elbert at Edison (POSTPONED)

FINAL:  #9 Community Christian beat Longmont 62-35

FINAL:  Pawnee beat Peetz 64-57

FINAL:  Norwood beat Nucla 76-30

Plateau Valley at North Park

FINAL:  Granada beat Kim 66-42

South Baca at Manzanola

Creede at Primero

FINAL:  Center beat Centennial 59-34

FINAL:  Cotopaxi beat Hanover 54-30

FINAL:  Jim Elliot beat Cornerstone Christian 66-49

The two best games on the schedule find Caliche on the road to Holyoke and Cheyenne Wells meeting a red hot Holly club.  Caliche gets back on the bus after falling at #2 Yuma (2A) 71-59 last night.  That loss dropped the Buffs out of a first place tie with the Indians in the Lower Platte league.  Winning in Holyoke won’t be easy especially after the Dragons fell to Akron on their home court (68-55) just last night.  Cheyenne Wells has a huge encounter with #2 McClave next Friday in a game that will likely decide the High Plains conference championship.  Tonight’s game should serve as a great tune-up for that highly anticipated matchup.  Holly improved to 9-4 by beating Springfield (45-42) for their sixth straight win.  Pawnee (Fleming) and Peetz (Prairie) both suffered league losses on Friday and now battle for third place in the North Central.  Pawnee actually is tied with Prairie (two losses apiece) for second place so a win keeps them in contention for that slot.  All three teams are looking up to Fleming who used last night’s win over Pawnee to develop a two game advantage.  Also look for #2 Shining Mountain to roll past Rocky Mountain Lutheran but don’t be surprised if the Lions have a slow start.  They’re on the court for the first time since beating 3A #1 Kent Denver in overtime Tuesday night.  That win should push the Lions past McClave and into the top spot of the new boys basketball rankings set for release on Sunday.

Holly is pretty impressive starting to turn into a physical game SG Jason Barth takes the ball to the hole with some authority while only standing at 5"8 . Also impressed with Cheyenne Wells Trey Brown and Matthew Sanders going to be an exciting finish!

Final Score
Holly 60
Cheyenne Wells 42

This Holly team is looking very very good right now controlled the entire 2nd half in this one . Out scoring them 21-9 in the 3rd with the subs in woth 3 min left in the 4th. After winning 7 in a row an taking down the 5th ranked team in the state I dont think any team wants to matchup with Holly right now. They could make a run into the middle of March.

This Holly team kind of resembles a few of the Caliche teams in the past that I had the pleasure of watching. They really like to run the court behind Jason Barth, Eddie Rodriguez, and Drew Thompson.
