BOYS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 2-20-13
Stepping into the spotlight tonight is a tremendous and very important battle inside the 3A Metro where top ranked Kent Denver collides with 3rd ranked Holy Family to decide the league championship. If the winner goes on to claim the district title next week that team could actually receive the number one overall state tournament seed as well. Both teams are unbeaten league play going in and the loser will not fall farther than second place.
Kent Denver’s offense is led by Josh Repine with 14.5 points per game. The senior has scored at least 17 points in the last three games and went for a season 31 points in a conference win over Machebeuf. Classmate Brian Boatman is next in line with 9 points a contest and is coming off a season high 21 point outburst against Colorado Academy.
Holy Family’s lone double digit scorer is David Sommers (13.1) who also contributes nearly 3 assists and 3 steals a night. The junior scored reached double figures in 12 of the first 13 games but has reached that level just twice in the last five. Sommers netted 22 points in a three point win over Peak to Peak and then added 18 in an important conference victory over Colorado Academy. Junior Ryan Williams (9.7) provides depth on the offensive.
Just how close are the two teams? Kent Denver is 16-1 on the season and has scored 1,027 points overall. Holy Family (16-2) has played one more game but has totaled 1,022 points in those contests.
In Class 5A, 8th ranked Cherokee Trail needs a win over last place Mullen to stay alone atop the Centennial standings. Grandview and Eaglecrest look to stay tied for second one game back. 2nd ranked Chatfield can officially clinch the Jeffco crown as they lead second place Columbine by two games. The Chargers and Rebels face off on Friday.
In Class 4A, #1 D’Evelyn has wrapped up the Jeffco crown and Evergreen can lock down the runner-up spot if they beat Alameda this evening. Golden can get to third with a win if Wheat Ridge falls to D’Evelyn as expected.
