BOYS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 2-22-13

Friday, February 22, 2013 - 5:11pm

With most of the league championships already decided and top seeds for district tournaments for the most part determined, there are only a few games on tonight’s schedule that will impact the conference standings and playoff picture.  District play also continues on the Western Slope and gets underway in the Patriot conference.

Semifinals for the 4A Western Slope district take place tonight at Colorado Mesa University.  Teams there have already clinched a state tournament berth but they are working to a championship that will land them a much higher post-season position.  Consolation semifinals are also on tap at Grand Junction Central high school and winners today also land a state berth with the losers battling tomorrow morning for the final invitation.

Pigtail games are on the Patriot league agenda and those winners stay alive for a state bid by moving on to the quarterfinals next Tuesday.  The losers tonight see an end to their regular season.  Out west, Pagosa Springs looks for a second win over Centauri in a top ten battle and if they get it the Pirates land the Intermountain league championship.  Centauri can force a tie for the top spot if they avenge an earlier loss.  Roaring Fork must also post a win to secure the outright Western Slope league championship and stave off a late season rally by Aspen who can land second with a win of their own.

In Class 2A, Limon and Rocky Ford square off for a non-league battle of league championship.  Limon is the Union Pacific crown and Rocky Ford easily landed the Santa Fe conference championship.  Combined they have just one loss since Christmas.  Sanford must also get a win over Sangre De Cristo to officially land the Southern Peaks crown.  Haxtun and Caliche already know their post-season placement but the battle is always a good rivalry and will affect the top four places in the Lower Platte league.

In Class 1A, third ranked Fleming scored a league title clinching win over Pawnee on Tuesday and also downed Prairie last night.  Tonight against Peetz they shoot for a perfect run through the North Central.  They’ve already clinched the number one seed for next week’s district tournament.

We’ll recap the scores and break down what the results mean during the Built Ford Tough Scoreboard Show.  It airs tonight from 9-11pm on the Colorado Preps Radio Network.  Final scores can be reported by text to 970.380.7737 or by email to kevin@coloradopreps.com.

Is Caliche still missing some kids?

Submitted by blackman on

Two starters sat out last week as they have injuries. It makes sense to heal and prepare for Districts next week, although I'm not sure of their status for tonight's game. They may try to play.

Thats kind of what I thought. For completely selfish reasons I hope they play tonight. Could be a really good game.

Great win for the Buffs. Haxtun's loss makes Yuma the LP champs.

Congrats.....wish the Buffs had a home and away game with Yuma like Haxtun.. like to see Yuma n Caliche on the Buffs court.. Good luck to all in Districts and hope all players stay injury free!!

Caliche's home floor is tough, no doubt.

Yuma is one of the toughest places to play at..Great fans....loud and supportive.

Man , you are sure right about the pit. Tough place! Hate that dancing indian. Looks like Limon had more trouble with Rocky Ford than I thought and Lutheran just got by Byers. Looks like the post season is going to be a great one.

Limon, Byers, Lutheran and Denver Christian are all in a district that only advances three teams to the round of 32. Unfortunately, one good team from that group will be eliminated a week too soon.

This is yet another example of inequality and the need to revise the postseason format at all levels. There likely will be other examples emerging in the next few days. I hope the CHSAA basketball committee members are reading these pages and take action before next season.

Fewer automatic qualifiers, more at-large selections...
