BOYS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 2-9-13
With top ranked Shining Mountain and second ranked McClave both suffering losses already this week, today’s game between #3 Fleming and #4 Hi Plains could determine the number one spot in next week’s Colorado Preps rankings. The game is a non-conference contest and won’t affect either team’s chase to a league championship but the outcome could also come into play during seeding of next month’s very deep 1A regional tournament.
In Class 2A, the roster includes several long-time and heated rivalries in many sports. Top rated Limon looks to sew up the Union Pacific crown against Burlington. The Cougars have struggled outside the conference but is unbeaten and tied with the Badgers atop the league standings going in. #2 Yuma looks to rebound from their first loss at Haxtun last night as they shoot for a season sweep of hot shooting Akron. The Indians beat the Rams by 10 just one week ago. 3rd ranked Peyton and Calhan are separated by just ten miles on Highway 24 and the highlight for each team each season is to beat the other. 10th ranked Rocky Ford has a three game cushion in the Santa Fe but faces a good test against league rival Fowler.
In Class 3A, Centauri’s win over Alamosa last night made the Intermountain League chase more interesting. It was the first league loss for the Moose who are now with Pagosa Springs for the top spot. Alamosa beat Pagosa Springs last week to take over first place. Centauri’s win pushed them to 3-2 and kept them just one game back and they can draw even closer to the leaders with a road win at Pagosa Springs tonight. 9th ranked Sterling needs a win over Strasburg to keep pace with Brush atop the Patriot. The top rated Beetdiggers blew past Frontier Academy.
Post season bracketing will be in play for the non-conference battle between Cheyenne Mountain and Valor Christian in Class 4A. Cheyenne Mountain likely will have to settle for third in the Pikes Peak after falling a second time to Lewis Palmer last night. Valor Christian is looking to build momentum for the post-season after suffering quality losses to 5A Rangeview and #3 Sand Creek over the past two weeks.
Below is the schedule for today and tonight. Final scores can be reported to Colorado Preps by text to 970.380.7737 or by email to kevin@coloradopreps.com.

Comments
Centauri-Pagosa has been postponed(weather). Reschedule dates TBA.
Fleming beat Hi Plains 64 to 45.
Holly bounces back with a good game tonight. They always have trouble with Wiley for some reason but I think they will be back on track when it comes playoff time.
Holly 65
Eads 52
No, I'd have to disagree with that one there. They have not had a problem with Wiley for some reason, nor has any other Ark Valley/SE team over the last two plus years. In fact, Holly and other teams have probably pretty much pounded the Wiley Panthers into submission over the last couple of years... to the tune of 10s of points I'd bet... in football as well as in basketball.
Wiley is just better than many of these teams this year and good for them.
I think Wiley boys deserve some cred for getting back to winning ball. The girls have been right there for the last few years too. Be nice to see them both do well in the playoffs this season.
No I give Wiley credit they are a pretty darn good team good basketball team behind Cody Wallace and can beat any team in the state on any given night the lost to McClave 44-43 earlier in the year what I am saying is Wiley has had Hollys number beating them in districts the last 2 years I believe. An I agree its good to see them get back on a winning track. But I do think Holly will pull it together in districts this year because this team is alot more focused than the other teams theyve had in the past. An Holly did miss quite a few free throws at the end of the game that could of changed the outcome but been very impressed with this Wiley team overall this season.
Wallace is a top 5 player in Class 1A IMO - saw him before Christmas and he carried Wiley to the Lamar championship game. With him in the lineup, they can beat any team in that region so I'm curious to see how they perform in the post-season. 1A basketball is wild this year - had about five coaches tell me today they didn't want to be ranked #1
Saw Fleming today - they're very good and very discplined on the offensive end. Have four seniors in the starting rotation that can handle the ball and score from many different places on the floor. The fifth starter does a great job and knowing his role and is content to keep moving the ball to scorers and focusing on defense. Defense is how they beat Hi Plains today. Was a two point game at half then the Wildcats forced several deflections that turned into easy baskets. Serrato and Chintala both hit several threes against the Hi Plains zone and that allowed Price and Vandenbark to also get points inside. Had several easy baskets late while spreading the floor in the halfcourt while the Patriots were in chase mode.
QUESTION: How many 1A teams have a legitimate shot at winning the state title this year? My opinion....much more wide open than the past five years where it seemed one, two or possibly three teams could win it all....this year many many more.
Welcome back Kevin. Hope all is well.
Well... judged by the score... it was a close one, huh? Good luck in the playoffs.
That Limon vs Burlington score is interesting........Whats the story on that game....Limon should beat them handedly??
