GIRLS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 1-24-13
A crowded Front Range league race (5A) continues to sort out tonight with several games that will affect the upper division. Poudre and Horizon open games in first and second but three other teams are within two games of the conference and four more sit within three. There’s also a key early game in the 5A Colorado Springs Metro where top contenders Palmer and Liberty battle for the first time. In the smaller division, highly ranked Simla (2A) and Wiley (1A) hope to register blowouts ahead of tougher challenges ahead.
Below is a list of games involving top ten teams and others that involve conference leaders. Final scores can be reported to Colorado Preps by text to 970.380.7737 or by email to email@example.com
FINAL: #6 Palmer beat Liberty 71-30
FINAL: Horizon beat Fort Collins 59-56
Poudre at Boulder
FINAL: Monarch beat Greeley West 67-55
FINAL: Fossil Ridge beat Legacy 40-37
FINAL: Loveland beat Fairview 38-28
FINAL: Kennedy beat Lincoln 47-35
Palmer and Liberty were two of the three Colorado Springs Metro league teams that won conference openers last week. Palmer (12-2) rolled by Rampart 60-39 behind 22 points from Shanah Leaf and 13 from Jasmine Green. Liberty dropped Fountain Fort Carson (54-45) as Alex Rivas netted 20 points. She was the only player in double figures for the Knights who collected their 8th win in 12 games. Palmer has won four straight since a loss to Rock Canyon. Liberty has won four of five with their lone loss coming against top ranked Pueblo South (4). Poudre (6-0) and Horizon (5-1) sit one-two in the Front Range league but behind is a crowded race featuring three teams at 4-2 (Fairview, Fort Collins & Loveland) and four more at 3-3 (Fossil Ridge, Legacy, Boulder & Monarch). With such a tight race, each game can greatly alter the conference standings. Only two of Poudre’s six league wins are by single digits. They edged Fort Collins (48-42) and Fossil Ridge (50-46) on the road but their last three wins are by a combined 75 points. Myanne Hamm (14.5) is the top scorer with fellow juniors Ashlee McDaniel (11.5) and McKenzie McDaniel (10.5) also getting their shots on the offensive end.
FINAL: #2 Broomfield beat Centaurus 40-37
FINAL: #4 Simla beat CIVA Charter 62-13
FINAL: #5 Peyton beat Mesa Ridge JV 82-51
FINAL: Limon beat Deer Trail 42-32
FINAL: Fowler beat Sierra Grande 37-36
Simla has a huge game with Peyton on Saturday and in the expected blowout of CIVA Charter tonight, they will likely rest most of their front line players for most of the game to avoid injury. The Cubs (9-0) feature one of the top players statewide in guard Kenzie Mitchell (19.3). The senior is also contributing 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals and is definite Player of the Year candidate. She’s been in double figures in each game hitting a season high 30 against Genoa Hugo. Limon is unbeaten in the Union Pacific (3-0) and currently shares the lead with Burlington (1-0). The Badgers have already taken out Byers (54-32), Genoa Hugo (52-37) and Flagler (43-36) in conference play. They face Burlington on February 9th.
#4 Wiley vs Manzanola
Unbeaten Wiley should have little trouble against Manzanola which has recorded just one win on the season. The Panthers also face Cheraw on the road tomorrow and these two games will be their final tune-up before a big showdown with Eads next Thursday. Three year starters Kim States (13.5) and Terri Johnson (12.4) pace the offense and the two have combined for 33 three pointers on the season. Senior Beth McDougal is also having the best season of her high school career with 11 points and 6 boards a night. She’s reached double figures in three of the last four games and gives the Panthers a nice third option on the offensive end.
