GIRLS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 2-12-13

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 4:08pm

Only two games are on the schedule tonight where a ranked team is challenged by another and only one of those two impact conference standings.  That game takes place in Class 5A where top ranked Regis tangles with 9th ranked Rock Canyon in the Continental.  The Raiders scored a huge win over Highlands Ranch last week and now stands alone in first while Rock Canyon looks to snap a two game skid and get back in the championship race.  In the smaller divisions, #2 Lutheran (2A) battles #9 Belleview Christian (1A).  The Lions have clinched the 3A Metro and now look to finalize preparations for a post-season push that ended in the state finals last year.  Belleview Christian is coming off a tough loss to Jim Elliot that could cost the Bruins a chance at the 5280 crown.

Below is a list of games involving top ten teams and others featuring results that will affect the top three positions in their respective conference.  Final scores can be sent to Colorado Preps by text at 970.380.7737 or by email to kevin@coloradopreps.com.

FINAL:  Brush beat Lyons 51-38

FINAL:  Florence beat Fountain Valley 61-38

FINAL:  Grand Valley beat Cedaredge 69-47

While Moffat County and Sterling are expected to post lopsided wins against lower division conference opponents, 8th ranked Valley should be in for a battle.  Tied with Sterling atop the Patriot (7-0), the Tigers face a Platte Valley squad only two games off the pace and one that is battling Brush and Eaton (all 5-2) for third place in the conference.  Valley has won 12 straight since a loss to 2A power Paonia before Christmas and since they’ve already beaten the other two third place teams, a win this evening locks them into a top two finish.  Platte Valley has won three straight since they nearly upset the other first place team in a 40-36 home loss to Sterling.  Freshman Adrianna Rios leads a balanced Broncos offense with 9.4 points per game.  She’s coming off a season high 17 points in Friday’s win over Strasburg.  Peak to Peak ended their three game slide with a crucial league win over Machebeuf last week.  That victory put the Pumas alone in fourth place in the Metro.  Since they trail second place teams Kent Denver and Holy Family by three games with only two conference contests remaining, they cannot climb any higher but a win over Faith Christian tonight locks them into the spot.  Clear Creek and Bennett are second and third in the Frontier League and both want to stay in those spots to avoid meeting Denver Science before the finals of the district tournament.  Both are favored this evening.  Manitou Springs opens the night alone atop the Tri Peaks West (9-1) while Salida is in third two games back (6-3).  In between is Classical Academy (8-2).  Manitou has won four in a row and toppled the Spartans 48-38 in the first meeting.  The Mustangs had three players reach double figures in the win with Gabby Santos hitting 13, Meghan McGee 11 and Brooke Garretson 10.  Those three hit 13 of 25 shots from the field in the win with McGee dropping in three treys on the night.  Salida collected 17 of their 38 points from Jamie Granzella.  The sophomore matched McGee by hitting three shots from the distance while classmate Brooke Golden netted two three’s on her way to seven points.  Sophomores in fact scored all 38 points for Salida in the loss.  Out west, Grand Valley looks for a win over Cedaredge to keep pace with Olathe.  The two are 10-3 in league play but two games back of first place Moffat County.  The Cardinals and Pirates split two regular season meetings so there’s a good chance they will end sharing the position.

CLASS 2A

FINAL:  #2 Lutheran beat #9 Belleview Christian (1A) 49-28

FINAL:  Denver Christian beat Nederland 67-17

FINAL:  Front Range Christian beat Union Colony 66-27

FINAL:  Dayspring Christian beat Liberty Common 48-43

Lutheran has already clinched the Metro title and has finished up their schedule but they still have four non-conference games on the slate.  Of the four remaining, tonight’s game could be the most difficult but the Lions will still be favored against a good Belleview Christian squad.  The Bruins of course will focus on the nights but will be paying attention to results from the Jim Elliot-Gilpin County battle in Class 1A.  If Gilpin County scores the upset, Belleview will be tied for first with those two teams atop the 5280 league.

CLASS 1A

FINAL:  #1 Norwood beat Dolores 55-49

FINAL:  #6 Jim Elliot beat Gilpin County 45-32

FINAL:  Otis beat Lone Star 56-42

FINAL:  Deer Trail beat Byers 59-48

FINAL:  Fleming beat Merino 58-39

FINAL:  Shining Mountain beat Community Christian 40-34

FINAL:  Springfield beat Walsh 41-40

Both games on the list have league championship implications.  Norwood leads Dolores and Ignacio by one game in the race for the San Juan championship while Jim Elliot tops Gilpin County and Belleview Christian by one game for the 5280 championship.  While Jim Elliott has a win over Belleview Christian and can clinch the league title with a win this evening, Norwood cannot wrap it up with a win since they also have a game remaining with Ignacio next week (23rd).  Norwood clipped Dolores 57-44 in a non-conference game right before Christmas.  They led by 14 at intermission and held the margin throughout the second half.  The Williams’ sisters paced the team with senior Harlie earning a team high 19 points and sophomore Jordan following with 13.  Five other Mavericks also scored in the balanced attack.  Dolores picked up a combined 31 points from Cydney McHenry (16) and Mindy McCracken (15).  The rest of the team managed only 13 points so the Bears seek more balance in attempting to avenge the earlier loss.  Jim Elliot has been led this year by freshman Keri Hogan with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists per game.  She dropped in 12 in the clutch win over Belleview Christian last week.  Senior Ana Trost adds 12 points and 10 rebounds per contest.  She was limited to eight points against Belleview but pulled down 13 important rebounds.  Gilpin County (13-4) reached the state tournament last year but a loss drops them to third in the conference.  Their leading scorers are Samantha Peterson (12.8) and Andromeda Ramsey (11.7).
