GIRLS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 2-16-13

Saturday, February 16, 2013 - 8:53am

A nice list of five games featuring ranked teams battling one another tops the Saturday agenda for girls basketball.  Two of the top ten clashes take place in Class 2A and results from both will impact conference standings.  Those games have #3 Vanguard hosting #6 Peyton and #7 Paonia hosting #8 Meeker.  Below is a list of games for the day and final scores can be reported to Colorado Preps by text to 970.380.7737 or by email to kevin@coloradopreps.com.

Vanguard sits alone atop the Black Forest conference with a one game lead on Peyton and Evangelical Christian.  Since the Coursers already have a win over ECA, another victory over Peyton today should basically clinch the league championship and number one seed for the district tournament.  Peyton has won five straight since a seven point loss to Simla.  Vanguard meantime beat the Cubs 50-39 eight days ago.  Paonia and Meeker are both unbeaten in conference play but it’s the second meeting between the two rivals this year.  Paonia won the first matchup 47-35 so they look for the season sweep and league championship.

In Class 1A, #2 Wiley heads to #3 Kim for a very attractive non-league clash.  Until last night both teams were unbeaten on the season but Wiley was upset by Springfield 35-34.  Kim also had a difficult time but they survived for a two point win at Holly.  This game will decide the number one seed for districts and could also impact regional seeding if both teams make that round as expected.

In Class 3A, the Tri Peaks East will finally sort itself out with #6 Lamar hosting #7 St Mary’s.  The Savages won the first meeting in a low scoring 32-30 final and that win separates the two in the conference standings.  St Mary’s creates a tie for the top spot if they avenge the earlier loss but we believe Lamar has the tiebreaker for the conference crown regardless of the outcome.

In Class 4A, the best matchup pits top tens Pueblo West (#5) and Sand Creek (#7) on the court in a non-conference battle.  State tournament seeds are the focus for this game as both are hoping for a spot in the top eight to host the first two rounds.  Pueblo West also has a date with top ranked Pueblo South on Tuesday so if they win both they’re a lock to grab a top four seed.  Two losses though could push them on the road in the opening round as a ninth or tenth seed.

In the big school ranks, league titles are on the line in the Colorado Springs Metro and City leagues.  #4 Palmer leads Doherty by one game in the CS Metro and a second win clinches the championship.  #10 Denver East and George Washington are unbeaten in league play and GW can clinch with an upset but East must still face third place Denver South next week so they won’t clinch with a victory.

Kevin I think you mean with Pueblo West losses to Sand Creek and Pueblo West again they'd fall out of the top 8 overall, giving them a 3 seed. Not that they'd get a 9th or 10th seed. I still think if they lose those 2 games their losses being to strong competition they could get that last 2 seed (top 8 still). Certainly not playing the opening round.

How about this idea? Pueblo West beats Sand Creek... like they just did, then go on to beat South at home!

Go Cyclones!

GREAT WIN FOR PEYTON

The panthers really played well tonight inside as well as outside glad to see them break down half court defence instead of just shooting threes. This is going to fun at districts!

Was at the game as well and came away very impressed with the Panthers - if they continue to shoot like that they will be one of the eight teams at the 2A state tournament - size continues to be a factor for them but their press will be physically and mentally draining for future opponents....Vanguard has one of the top players in the state in Haist but she was quiet offensively after two quick threes...depth will be their biggest concern in the post-season.

I have seen both Wiley and Kim play. That must have been a thrilling game. I am very interested to see how those two teams factor into the postseason!

Unfortunately I missed the game. Had to endure AF's 3 point loss to CSU. Have to admit i was shocked to see the score. I've seen Peyton on their game and if so, they can definitely compete--obviously they were on. Nice win Peyton, good luck through the post season!!

Very Nice win by Peyton. I really didn't see that coming. And really didn't expect as convincing a victory as Peyton put on Vanguard. The pace of Peyton's game as well as Vanguard's depth issues were the difference. The ECA/Peyton game should be exciting, as both teams play a similar style..ECA's depth may be the biggest issue. They only have 6 players with much varsity experience. If the ECA girls can stay on the floor, they are tough enough on defense to perhaps keep it close. If Peyton is shooting lights out from THREE-Land...Look out!
Kevin, it was nice to chat with you on Saturday night...always insightful.. Looks and sounds like Akron is heads and shoulders above the rest of the State.

The Rams are the favorite right now but I wouldn't say they are head and shoulders above the rest of the state.  Class 2A I think actually has more depth this year than last so getting to the state tournament will be more difficult and once there, it will take three very good nights of basketball to claim the top prize.  Luck is also involved so one never knows.  Talent wise I think Akron has the deepest roster of the teams I've seen plus their senior class has played in two state finals during their careers.  I think that also gives them a slight advantage because they've been there and done that.  Lutheran's roster also has girls that have played in the state finals as well plus they have the extra incentive of trying to avenge last year's loss to Akron.  Yuma of course has played Akron very well in two regular season and meetings and they could meet a third time in districts.  The Indians have plenty of depth as well but that team has not been to the state basketball tournament.  They could be helped by their appearance in state volleyball as many of the names are the same.  If Peyton shoots the ball as well as they did against Vanguard they can beat any team in the state but I'm concerned a bit about their size.  Their style of play negates that a bit but if a team has a strong inside game and can control their pressure, the Panthers will have trouble matching up.  With Haist, Vanguard will always be a threat while Simla, ECA, Paonia and Las Animas could also get very hot at the right time and play a role in the state championship.  Should be fun no matter who ends up on top.

Up until Peyton beat vanguard, everyone to include co preps and gazette preps had already crowned vanguard league camps--good thing they got to play the game. No doubt akron is the team to beat. However, just like vanguard, you never know. Looking forward to state competition. I am for a repeat champion and I'm also a big fan of the underdog. It appears 2A will have 7 underdogs.
