GIRLS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 2-22-13

Friday, February 22, 2013 - 2:50pm

The final Friday of the regular season brings with it several important games as teams continue to battle for league championships and better post-season seeding.  The highlight is probably the big 3A clash between top ranked Centauri and 5th ranked Pagosa Springs as the two long-rivals try to decide the Intermountain league champion.  Centauri won the first game by two points and a second win gives them the championship while the Pirates need a win of at least three points to secure the top seed at next week’s district tournament.

In Class 2A, the major attraction is Peyton’s trip to Evangelical Christian.  The Panthers are ranked 4th in the state with ECA number ten.  Peyton is the Black Forest champion and top district seed with a win.  Should ECA avenge a 22 point non-conference loss, then they will end up second and Vanguard grabs the league championship while Peyton slides all the way to fourth.

Eads and McClave battle for second place in the High Plains conference and more importantly the number two seed in next week’s district tournament.  The second seed earns a first round bye while the third place team must play a quarterfinal match.  Both teams trail league champion Kit Carson by one game as the Wildcats have already earned the top seed and a bye into the semifinals.

Up in Class 4A, the Western Slope district tournament enters its second round.  Teams in the semifinals tonight have already clinched a berth in the state tournament and they will be joined there by consolation semifinal winners from today.  Montrose and Delta are expected to battle for the district title tomorrow afternoon.  In the South Central, Pueblo West can take the number one seed from the conference by beating Canon City.  The first game was decided by just one point.  Canon City is likely in a must win situation to make the playoffs since Mullen’s win over Cherokee Trail on Wednesday could take a berth from the conference.  A loss likely drops Canon City to fifth with the top four qualifying

Grandview’s loss to Arapahoe on Wednesday created a very tight Centennial chase entering the final day of the schedule.  It was the Wolves first conference loss and left them just one game ahead of Arapahoe and Cherry Creek.  The Bruins challenge Grandview tonight and a win there sets up the strong possibility of a three way.  That’s the result if Arapahoe also wins at Cherokee Trail as expected.  If Grandview gets a second win over Cherry Creek then the Wolves grab the outright championship and Arapahoe slides into second by beating the Cougars.

Denver East (City) and Grand Junction (SWL) have a one game edge in their respective races but they both need wins over second place teams tonight to officially clinch the championship.  Denver East heads to Denver South while Grand Junction faces Fruita Monument.  In both cases, a loss by the first place team could result in a three way tie.  East leads South and George Washington by one game in the City league while Grand Junction is one up on Fruita Monument and Montrose in the SWL.

Below is the entire schedule for tonight and we’ll recap the action during the Built Ford Tough Scoreboard Show tonight from 9-11pm on the Colorado Preps Radio Network.  Final scores can be sent to Colorado Preps by text to 970.380.7737 or by email to kevin@coloradopreps.com.

Let's say Pueblo South beats East, West beats Canon City and County beats Central. Pueblo East (13-9 overall), County (13-9 overall) and Canon City (15-7 overall) will all be tied for 3rd after tonight's games. Only 2 of them will get in after Mullen's likely to steal a spot. East beat Canon City twice, County beat East twice, and Canon City beat County twice. How does this 3 way tiebreaker work? Tough break for one of those teams. Believe Canon City was ranked at some point this season and they could possibly miss the tournament. But wait, here are few teams that have clinched or tied for a spot to get in.

Denver West currently 1-6 in the DPL (9-13 overall)
Kennedy currently 2-6 in the DPL (6-17 overall)
Vista Peak currently 2-19 in the Colorado 7 (3-19 overall)
Coronado 5-8 in the CS Metro (7-15 overall)
Lewis Palmer 4-9 in the Pikes Peak (9-13 overall) - tied with Falcon for final spot in PP
Falcon 5-8 in the Pikes Peak (8-14 overall) - tied with Lewis-Palmer for final spot in PP

What a joke CHSAA has made of the 4A playoffs. Canon City beat Elizabeth (Colorado 7 League Champ) by 20 at Elizabeth. East beat Denver South (#1 4A team from DPL) by 15. Sorry, rant over for now.

Don't know all the details but I believe Canon City is the odd team out in that scenario.  Believe they have to beat Pueblo West (1 point first game) to get a bid since Mullen seems a lock to be in now.

it should be a fun game at ECA tonight.....that small gym creates a unique environment thats fun to play in, watching it may be a challenge if you don't get there before half time of the JV boys game.

GO PANTHERS!

I belive you have the 4a western consolation game wrong. Delta won last night, so I believe it's Eagle Valley in the consolatoin game (I'm just trying to remember from the 2/21 results article so I could be mistaken).

Thanks for catching that....you are correct and I made the change!

This is interesting:
gbbfan indicates:
Pueblo East (13-9 overall), County (13-9 overall) and Canon City (15-7 overall) will all be tied for 3rd.
and
East beat Canon City twice, County beat East twice, and Canon City beat County twice

So far they still look tied, but Kevin indicates Canon City is the odd team out. That's really a shame for them. Maybe CHSAA needs a few at-large bids.

But I'm wondering what the tie breaker order is. I would have thought league record (tied), head to head, and then overall. Canon City has the best overall record, so how did that happen, did Canon City lose both games to County?

Just curious what the determining factor is in this specific tie-breaker (assuming of course West wins tonight)..

My information comes from the newspaper sports editor with the Canon City Daily Record and the article they wrote after the last game the Tigers played indicated they would have clinched a spot if they had won by at least 12 points.  The margin of victory was only six points so I'm guessing there's some sort of point system involved in breaking the tie.  Canon City though gets in by beating Pueblo West tonight.

A top 4A team excluded from field of 48? Two other good teams (Mullen & Valor) faced a near miss? Bottom dweller teams being put in the field? A selection system based on league quotas rather than merit? CHSAA should apologize to the SC team that doesn't make it and use an intelligent selection process next year.

To summarize something I wrote a couple of weeks ago, I wish 4A would qualify 50% of teams from each league (about 33 teams), then select the final 15 or so teams at-large based on entire season performance.

Everyone should be happy. The weakest leagues would still get their top teams in, and good teams in the bottom half of deep leagues would still have a fair chance at the postseason.

CHSAA playoff committees in all sports need to realize that all leagues are not equal, and all playoff berths should never be preallocated by league before a single game is played. They must always hold a few berths in reserve to compensate for the inevitable differences in league quality.
