GIRLS BASKETBALL: Schedule/Results 2-5-13

Tuesday, February 5, 2013 - 9:17am

Only two games on tonight’s schedule pit ranked team against another and as you would guess, both have league championship implications.  Rock Canyon entertains Chaparral in the 5A Continental and Jim Elliot is challenged by Belleview Christian in 1A 5280 league.  Rock Canyon needs a win to keep pace with the winner of tomorrow’s game between Regis and Highlands Ranch while Belleview Christian can virtually sew up the title with a win.

Below is a list of games involving top ten teams and others that impact league championship races.  Final scores can be reported to Colorado Preps by text to 970.380.7737 or kevin@coloradopreps.com.  If your school has a twitter feed that you use to report scores, please let us know and we’ll follow the games in that manner.

FINAL:  Thomas Jefferson beat Montbello 51-44

The most important matchup in the Continental is set for tomorrow when top ranked Regis meets 2nd ranked Highlands Ranch but lost in the first place shuffle is Rock Canyon.  The fourth ranked Jaguars are also unbeaten in league play and hope to challenge the Raiders and Falcons for the league championship.  Rock Canyon goes to Highlands Ranch on Friday in another important tilt.  Palmer and Ralston Valley look to stay atop their respective conference.  Palmer took over first place in the CS Metro by beating Doherty on Saturday while Ralston opened a two game lead in the Jeffco by finishing off a season sweep of second place Lakewood.  Poudre and Horizon begin play tonight tied for the Front Range lead but the Hawks own the tiebreaker since they ended the Impalas 15-game winning streak last Friday.  Loveland, which beat Horizon last week, sits a game back in third place.

FINAL:  Canon City beat Pueblo Central 77-36

FINAL:  Longmont beat Niwot 71-27

FINAL:  Centaurus beat Mountain View 38-28

FINAL:  Thompson Valley beat Greeley Central 48-28

FINAL:  Green Mountain beat Arvada 73-29

The two most important games on the list pit #3 Mesa Ridge against Sierra and 8th ranked Montrose on the road to Fruita Monument.  Mesa Ridge beat Sierra by 19 points in their first meeting but that result is the one game separating them from first and second in the Colorado Springs Metro.  A win tonight won’t officially clinch the league crown for Mesa Ridge but it will be a major step to landing the title.  Montrose faces both Fruita Monument tonight and Grand Junction Friday on the road in the two games that should determine the Southwestern champion.  Montrose won the first meetings at home so they have a one game edge on Grand Junction and a two game spread on Fruita Monument.  Two wins should give the Indians the championship.  Windsor has built a three game lead in the Tri Valley so two wins this week will earn them a league title.  After hosting Skyline tonight, they head to Mead on Friday.  Pueblo South, Broomfield, D’Evelyn and Sand Creek should grab wins tonight to remain in first of their respective conferences.  South is one up on Pueblo West in the South Central; Broomfield is ahead of Thompson Valley in the Northern;  D’Evelyn has a two game lead in the Jeffco and Sand Creek has the same margin in the Pikes Peak.  Pueblo West (South Central) and Palmer Ridge (Pikes Peak) currently sit in second place.

CLASS 3A

FINAL:  #3 Holy Family beat Colorado Academy 52-35

FINAL:  #6 Pagosa Springs beat Sanford 47-25

FINAL:  #8 Valley beat Lyons 53-19

FINAL:  Eaton beat Frontier Academy 59-39

FINAL:  Platte beat University 34-25

FINAL:  Kent Denver beat Peak to Peak 54-49

FINAL:  Bennett beat Sheridan 67-55

FINAL:  Pinnacle beat Jefferson 54-29

FINAL:  Manitou Springs beat Salida 51-36

FINAL:  Salida beat Fountain Valley 46-24

FINAL:  Roaring Fork beat Aspen 64-23

Holy Family and Kent Denver begin the night with one league loss apiece and tied for second behind first place Lutheran.  Since both teams have already lost to the Lions it appears the best finish for either will be the league runner-up.  Both teams have opponents trailing them by just one game in the standings so if both the Tigers and Devils pull off victories, they’ll have a two game cushion on all other teams in the battle for second and third.  Holy Family has momentum from a win over Denver Science eight days ago.  Kent Denver has outscored their first five league opponents by just 27 points and is getting accustomed to tight games.  Pagosa Springs has a huge date at home with Centauri on Saturday.  They whipped Sanford 45-16 in their first meeting and are 5-0 against the 2A Southern Peaks this year.  Valley is favored on the road to Lyons.  An 11th straight win will keep them tied with Sterling atop the Patriot. Bennett and Sheridan are tied for third in the Frontier.  Getting that spot will be important in the district bracket as the third place team will be opposite Denver Science in the pairings.  The loser could end up fourth which would mean a possible semi-final appearance with the high powered Knights.

CLASS 2A

FINAL:  #1 Akron beat Wiggins 73-19

FINAL:  #2 Lutheran beat Manual 63-39

FINAL:  #7 Paonia beat Rifle 41-39

FINAL:  Brush beat Highland 52-37

FINAL:  Sedgwick County beat Merino 42-36

FINAL:  Denver Christian beat Union Colony 68-28

FINAL:  Front Range Christian beat Alexander Dawson 39-36

FINAL:  Ignacio beat Bayfield 49-46

Lutheran has two games this week and a win either tonight or on Friday at Colorado Academy will give them the much coveted Metro league championship.  Once that’s done, they can focus on their second goal of the season and that’s to win the state title.  Paonia has all but wrapped up the Western Slope title as they’ve already beaten their top challengers but tonight they get a great challenge against a 4A opponent that’s in the mix for a top two finish in their conference.  Win or lose, it will be tremendous prep work for the Eagles who seek a second consecutive state tournament appearance.  With identical records of 3-2 in the Patriot, Brush and Highland are part of a four way tie for third.  All four teams trail co-leaders Valley and Sterling (both unbeaten) by two games.  Highland lost to Sterling by just ten points and they fell at Platte Valley (52-39) but have won two straight.  Since they also play Valley on Friday, two wins will put the Huskies in position for a top two or three position.  Brush scored seven points in the final 25 seconds of overtime to sting Estes Park (48-46) on the road last week.  That rally ended two weeks of frustration for the Diggers who had lost three of four while battling injuries.

CLASS 1A

FINAL:  #3 Kim beat Manzanola 93-15

FINAL:  #6 Jim Elliott beat #9 Belleview Christian 43-37

FINAL:  Gilpin County beat Rocky Mountain Lutheran 43-31

FINAL:  Weskan KS beat Cheyenne Wells 39-26

FINAL:  Dove Creek beat Durango JV 48-23

FINAL:  Pikes Peak Christian beat Edison 35-28

Kim’s game with Manzanola was scheduled for last Friday but was pushed back to tonight.  Regardless of the date, the Mustangs would be heavily favored at home and tonight they’re playing their first game since moving up to third in the 1A rankings.  They will also use the game to prep for a nice test on Friday when they host #7 Eads.  Tai Nittler (20.8) is the outside threat for the Mustangs with Alexa Feemster (15.2 pts / 11.9) handling most of the inside duties.  It’s a huge night inside the 5280 where Belleview Christian can basically clinch the title.  They knocked off Gilpin County last week and tonight try to take down the other top challenger for the league crown.  The teams are a combined 27-1 on the season with Belleview’s 15 point loss to Kim the only blemish for either team.  Gilpin County will be watching the outcome with great interest.  They remain in the chase if Jim Elliott gets the win but may have to settle for a possible second place finish if Belleview Christian grabs the victory.
