GIRLS BASKETBALL: Seeding Opinions (2A, 1A)
15 of the 16 available state tournaments berths for Classes 1A and 2A have been determined with the final spot handed out tomorrow when Yuma (18-4) meets Highland (13-10) for the Region Seven championship. That game, originally scheduled for Saturday, was pushed back to Sunday when the St Vrain school district cancelled all activities for the day and that included the tournament hosted by Frederick high school.
Because of the delay, state tournament pairings for Class 2A won’t be announced until Monday. That will allow for the “argument” between Akron (24-0) and Lutheran (23-0) over the number one seed to fester for one more day. We’ll stick with our opinion that the Rams will get the top seed with Lutheran easily taking the number two spot. That decision won’t be affected by the outcome between Yuma and Highland.
Vanguard (23-1) should nab the third seed but that’s where the bracket will start to get interesting. Peyton, Simla, Yuma (if they win) and Sangre De Cristo all have a case for the number four seed. ECA finished second in the Black Forest conference ahead of both Peyton and Simla. Since Sangre De Cristo knocked off the Eagles, it makes sense for the T-Birds to land the fourth spot. Peyton probably gets the fifth seed since they beat Simla head to head but then we’ll put Yuma in the sixth spot with Simla seventh and Ignacio number eight. If Highland upsets Yuma, then look for Simla and Ignacio to bump a spot leaving the eighth position to the Huskies.
The seeds for Class 1A should also lay out rather nicely. Norwood and Kim both have one loss but expect the Mavericks to earn the top seed. Their lone loss came against 2A Ignacio so they’re unbeaten against 1A foes. Norwood also beat Kim in the tournament last year on their way to a second place finish. Kim likely is the number two with Caliche third and Wiley fourth. Based on record (20-3), look for Belleview Christian to earn the fifth seed. They pushed Kim to within 15 points at mid-season and also eliminated the defending state champions (Pawnee) in the regional round on Saturday. Eads would then earn the sixth with Idalia seventh and Stratton eighth. Idalia topped Stratton during the regular season so that should give the Wolves the nod over the Eagles. Plus they have six more wins.
Classes 3A, 4A and 5A continue to play out their bracket from the very beginning so those matchups are already known. Game times should be released on Sunday with the state quarterfinals in Class 3A set for Thursday. The state semifinals in 4A and 5A will be conducted Thursday in Boulder.

Do you see any changes coming in 1a regionals? I know no matter what everyone won't be happy, but i didn't know if there was talk of changing it or not?
If the committee uses strength of schedule and Maxpreps rankings, then Caliche will be #1. They have been ranked #1 almost throughout the season, plus they beat probable 2A #4 seed Yuma. Norwood had a relatively easy schedule, with the exception of Ignacio, who they lost to. Wiley and Kim beat on each other. Truth is all four are worthy of being #1, arguments can be made to seed these 4 anywhere from 1 to 4. Fr0m what I saw and heard this weekend, Idalia and Stratton could be toughest #7 & #8 seeds in a long time and not surprised to see upsets Thursday. Here is how I feel it should be.
1. Caliche
8. Stratton
4. Wiley
5. Belleview
3. Kim
6. Eads
2. Norwood
7. Idalia
1 Akron
2 Lutheran
3 Vanguard
4 Peyton
5 Yuma
6 Sangre de Cristo
7 Simla
8 Ignacio
Anyone know the Yuma score?
Yuma up 40-31 at half
Correction. 41-20
40-21 .. Trying to relay the information. Typing too fast.. 40-21 at half is correct.
In 1A, the Western district insisted on retaining the single-game round of 16 regional format. Everyone else accepted to some extent a larger field - if not 32 teams, then 24 teams. As a compromise, the three districts closest to the Western (Denver 5280, Black Forest/Union Pacific and Southern Peaks) agreed to pair on a rotating basis and only advance two qualifiers every third year. The North Central and YWKC would always stay together and advance three teams each, as would the High Plains and Arkansas Valley/Southeastern districts. The third district assigned to each of the larger regionals varies by geography according to who is not matched with the Western in any given year.
In predicting seedings and pairings, I separate teams from the same district as long as possible.
