VOLLEYBALL - STATE POOL PAIRINGS ANNOUNCED
Not many surprises can be found in the pool pairings for the state volleyball tournament released by CHSAA today. Doherty, Cheyenne Mountain, Valley, Lutheran and Weldon Valley earn the top seeds in the various classes. Weldon Valley earned the #1 billing in Class 1A despite falling to Caliche in regional play last week. The Warriors are officially in the bracket as a wildcard.
Pool play will get underway this Friday morning at 8:00am and we’ll post the schedule this afternoon. All 75 matches of the state tournaments will be streamed live at www.chsaa.tv.

POOL #4 will be fun to WATCH!
Help me understand how you loose in regionals and still end up as the #1 overall seed.
While someone tries to explain that, could they also explain how you can sweep all of your regional games and drop in rankings? I, personally, feel that the Freeman Rankings have a few flaws. Had hoped that the committee would have looked at records and schedule to make their decisions. To me, it appears that in 1A and 2A teams were ranked SOLELY on the Freeman Rankings. Winning your region didn't mean anything except to narrow the field in half. I much prefer the 3A/4A/5A method of Regional qualifying with 12 regions. Although, I am sure that there are flaws there as well. It all boils down to you have beat the best to be the best! No do overs! Good luck to all! Can't wait to see ALL Colorado volleyball has to offer :)
OK "They" CHSAA/Seeding Committee have baffled me yet again in 3A. Here are the official Max Preps Freeman Rankings right from the CHSSA website.
1. Valley
2. Platte Valley
3. Gunnison
4. Bayfield
5. University
6. St Mary’s
7. Eaton
8. Holy Family
9. Sterling
10. Colorado Springs Christian
11. Roaring Fork
12. Manitou Springs
Pools 1 & 2 are right but 3 & 4 are all jacked up.
Why was (Per Freeman Rankings) #3 Gunnison changed to #6? Basically, "They"(CHSAA/Committee) made this change. They moved the 3 teams that were behind Gunnison ahead of them. Based on the rankings this is how Pools 3 and 4 should look.
Pool 3: (1) Gunnison, (2) St Mary’s, (3) CSCS
Pool 4: (1) Bayfield, (2) University, (3) Sterling
If they did the seeding "First" based on the rankings. St Mary's would be #6 and Eaton #7. With that line-up, the only case for a change that could be made would be to swap Eaton with St Mary's. Here is why they would swap those two. Their "Ratings" are almost identical. St Mary's 31.6 & Eaton 31.4. Big difference in "Strength of Schedule" though. Eaton 14.3 & St Mary's (negative) -.5. Another reason they would swap them would be that Eaton handed St Mary's their only loss. ANOTHER reason for making the swap (probably the most important reason), would be that two Patriot Powers wouldn't have to face each other in round one (with one of them being ELIMINATED). Potentially, if they went by true rankings and made the swap (strong case made for doing so) their could have potentially been an ALL PATRIOT - Final Four. OH NO - Can't have that.
So "They" went and jacked with the seeding. Why else would they move #3 ranked Gunnison to #6?????? The same reason that "They" put Platte Valley and Eaton in the same bracket in Football. Can't have Patriot teams spread out - NO WAY. There would be a greater probability of "Patriot" teams being in the State Championship games. Can't have that so lets get them to eliminate each other early.
Your thoughts? This could be an interesting discussion.
obviously, when Swink is ahead of both Simla and Akron, there is a flaw in this ranking system.
Not a Swink fan, but I recognize a good team when I see it, and they are good. You need to keep in mind that Swink is in a district that has 4 top ten teams. That means more than the teams who go undefeated in a league that is weak.
Lower Platte league has 3 teams at state: Akron, Yuma, and Caliche 1A. So the tough league scenario still doesn't explain Swink's rise in rankings and Akron's decline. Also, check out Kevin's notes from the 2A Capsule section especially noting quality teams played. It would be nice to understand the criteria so coaches can best prepare in the future.
Lets watch Swink at state and determine that. Just because they aren't undefeated? They have 3 teams from district 6 at state (Rye, Fowler, and Swink) which just proves they have a difficult district.
Very bad in 2A, Akron got hosed!! Would have thought a Simla/Akron rematch in the semis would have been a good thing.
In 1A, they rewarded WV for the entirety of their season. Also it makes 2 story lines the committee likes. Either WV v Caliche title game or another Fleming v Otis rematch.
It will be an amazing weekend!! Good luck everyone
Why not an HP v Otis rematch?
