Good Luck to Everyone! Hope there is some AWESOME UPSETS! Those are so fun to watch! Can't wait
Kevin, thanks for the individual game start times. How did you get them and are they firm? I haven't been able to find specific start times anywhere on CHSAA. I assumed they would stay to the 1 1/2 hour schedule that they used during Regional's and came up with the same schedule that you have posted. If it is just based on assumption a "Lunch Break" would/could change the afternoon and evening schedule. I look forward to your response.
The schedule each day starts at 8:00am and even though we have 90 minutes scheduled for each match, they will roll right into the next match regardless of the time. For example, if the 8:00am match takes only 45 minutes, they won't wait until 9:30am to start match two. They will have their normal 15-minute warmup time and then move on with the next match which could push up all the matches in that class. Late in the day, if one class finishes their schedule and a court becomes open, they could move a match from another class to that court. They simply want to get the matches in as quickly as possible to give the teams as much rest as possible for Saturday.
The only set times are the championship matches for Saturday as all are set to have the first serve at 7:00pm. Semifinals are tentatively slated for 2:00 and 3:30pm but again if the previous matches wrap up before then, they'll roll right into the semifinals. Hopefully that makes sense.
Colorado Preps will be producing all 75 matches of the tournament (15 in each class) for CHSAA.TV so fans can watch all the matches live online. They can be seen at www.chsaa.tv and the schedule is available there now.
Kevin or whoever....there is a potential for some pools ending with 3 teams having 1-1 records....does anybody know what the tirbreaker will be...I have heard diffferent stories....from number of sets and then games....to there actually being some additionla one game tiebreaker games being played...thanks
For a 3-way tie for the #1 or #3 seed or if there is a three way tie for only one qualifying spot,
determine set percentage among TIED teams (eliminate non-tied teams). The two lowest set
percentage teams will play one set to 25 points (no cap). The winner will then immediately
play the highest set percentage team to determine the #2 seed. If two teams are tied with
the highest set percentage, use head-to-head to break the tie. THERE MUST BE TWO
ONE-SET PLAYOFFS.
congrats to all the winners and to all those teams that made it to the tourny....just a quick comment on the tie breaker procedure in one of the 3A pools where it ended up having 3 teams tied at 1-1...
I kinda felt bad for Roaring Fork....they played BOTH of their pool games on Friday.....then had to sit around for a majority of Saturday to see if they were still in it....then when Eaton beat Platte Valley Roaring Fork had to immediatley play a one game match to 25 against Platte Valley.....wasn't a ton of time to shake of the cob webs so to speak and by the time they really get warmed up, the game is over....I now you have to be ready to play and ready to bring your A game at any time, but it deal feel like a little bit of a disadvantage for them the way things shook down....and personally I'm glad I wasn't a Roaring Fork fan who had to hang around and decide whether I wanted to pay the $10 not only to park but then another $10 to get in, not even knowing if my team would play and then when they did it was only for one game to 25....not the best setup for those folks....think someone mentioned earlier that one of the reasons CHSAA/committee went to the 12 team format was to try and reduce the chances of tiebreakers....well they had one and they way it shook down for Roaring Fork, it really couldn't have been much worse....I realize there may not be a perfect scenerio to handle these things, but they may want to take a look at it...
also just another quick observation....it really seemed like the teams felt there was a distinct advantage on which side of the court they were on....in every instance I saw, the team that won the flip chose to take the side of the court that did not have the dividing nets right behind where they serve from (on 4 of the courts)....they always chose side over serve....maybe doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but it really was to most teams....the extra room on the "non net" side seemed to be important....I know there is only so much you can do in the space provided, but at the state championships you would think the courts should be equal on both sides....
perhaps 4 four team pools!
The major drawback from pool play is the possibility of three-way ties and application of various tiebreakers, both on and off the court. It always puzzles me why CHSAA is so fixated on pool play for volleyball all the way to the state semifinals.
A better format would be double elimination with 8 teams. There would be no three-way ties and no team would have to stay overnight for -- maybe -- a single game tiebreaker on a moment's notice. Every team would have complete control of its fate and would not need a certain result from two other teams. Quite simply -- win and continue, lose twice and go home.
This is how it would work:
Friday:
Matches 1-4: Pairings by entering seed -- 3-6, 2-7, 1-8, 4-5
Matches 5-6: First round winners, Matches 1-2 and 3-4
Matches 7-8: First round losers, Matches 1-2 and 3-4
Saturday:
Match 9: Second round winners, Matches 5-6
Match 10: Winner, Match 7 vs loser, Match 6
Match 11: Winner, Match 8 vs loser, Match 5
Match 12: Winner, Match 10 vs winner, Match 5
Match 13: Winner, Match 11 vs winner, Match 6
Saturday, 6:00 PM: Matches 14 and 15, if necessary after a 30-minute break. If three teams remain after Match 13, the last unbeaten team (winner of Match 9) advances directly to Match 15.
