The softball program at Broomfield High School improved to 19-0 on Thursday afternoon by winning its sixth straight game by double digits.

The Eagles’ 14-4 win over Frederick (a back-to-back Class 4A state semifinalist) moves them to 10-0 in the 5A/4A/3A Granite Peaks League — two games and a tiebreaker ahead of last year’s 5A runner-up, Erie (13-6, 7-2), Holy Family (14-4, 7-2) and the Golden Eagles (12-8, 7-2).

In this week’s look-in on softball, we’ll take a look at four leagues around the state and where they stand with just two weeks left in the regular season.

5A/4A/3A Granite Peaks League

Where it stands: Broomfield (19-0, 10-0) has been dominant all season long, and that includes in a league that features three teams of the most decorated softball programs in state history — Erie (Colorado-most 12 state titles), Legacy (second with six) and Holy Family (four titles; three since 2018).

The Eagles have already beaten Erie, Holy Family and Frederick — teams that made the final weekend of last year’s state tournament. And on Tuesday, they’ll look for their 20th straight win when they host Niwot (10-4, 6-2).

Who leads the way: Broomfield junior Kiley Wheaton leads the league with a .640 batting average, while teammate Lauren Martinez is second (.619) and Lilly Smith is fourth (.564).

Fairview junior Julia Savage, meanwhile, has had a season for the record books. Among the seven states playing softball in the fall, she is tied for third in home runs (12) and is eighth in slugging (1.619).

5A Jeffco League

Where it stands: Valor Christian (15-2, 6-0), ranked second in 5A’s CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index, is two games ahead of Chatfield (11-5, 4-2) and Columbine (13-4, 4-2).

The Eagles rallied to beat Arvada West 10-9 in eight innings on Wednesday. Paige Coleman’s RBI double in the sixth tied things 9-9 and Brooklyn Whidden walked things off when she took home on a wild pitch in the eighth.

Who leads the way: Valor Christian’s Kendall Ferguson is hitting .625, with the nation’s third-most home runs in the fall at 13 and its ninth-best slugging percentage (1.563).

Meanwhile, Eagles senior pitcher Olivia Schmidt is 10-1 with a 2.36 ERA.

4A Pikes Peak

Where it stands: Three-time defending champ Lutheran (13-1, 5-0) — which won the 3A title in 2021 and the 4A title the past two seasons — has won 10 straight and leads Palmer Ridge (15-2-1, 5-1) by a half-game in the standings.

The Lions beat the Bears 17-7 earlier this month and the two will meet again on Monday.

Who leads the way: Cheyenne Mountain’s Jaylah Rivera is 14th in the nation with a .703 batting average this fall. The Red-Tailed Hawks (10-4, 3-2) have lost to Lutheran and Palmer Ridge in league play.

Junior Ella Faries is 11-0 in the circle for Lutheran, touting a 2.59 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings.

3A Patriot League

Where it stands: Class 3A No. 1 Eaton (16-2, 5-0) and No. 3 University (12-5, 5-0) are tied atop the standings. No. 2 Strasburg (15-4, 4-1) is a game back with its loss to the Reds earlier in the month.

On Thursday, Eaton and the Bulldogs won big to stay unbeaten in league. The Reds beat Lyons by 13 and University shut out Platte Valley 16-0. The two will meet Thursday.

Who leads the way: Resurrection Christian’s Karisa Lippincott is hitting .673 with 20 extra base hits in 52 at-bats.

Eaton’s Johanna Galvan has a 1.27 ERA in 55 innings pitched. She was 7-0 on the season until she took the loss in a 4-2 defeat to 4A No. 7 Holy Family on Saturday.
