DENVER – Even when defending a Class 4A boys basketball state championship, Kent Denver is always learning when it’s playing at Denver Coliseum.
In a 77-63 win over Denver West on Wednesday, the Sun Devils learned what kind of toughness they need going into the Final 4.
The Cowboys brought a physical brand of basketball to the old barn and forced Kent Denver to truly in its way into the state semifinals.
Caleb Fay led the way with 26 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds in the win. But as the physicality dialed up even more in the closing minutes, the Sun Devils stayed even-keeled and just played their way to the final buzzer.
“We learned the value of composure,” Fay said. “We haven’t seen a team be this physical, all credit to them. You just have to keep your composure and play the game the way you know how to play.”
In a game that coach Todd Schayes would’ve rather seen have a 100-95 final score, Kent did a little bit of everything. The Sun Devils shot 52% from the floor and although they only attempted 10 3-pointers, they cashed in on four of them.
Their consistent attack on the basket put them at the free throw line 34 times and they made 21 of those attempts.
There were probably a few more turnover than they’d like, but a they have a day of practice before coming back to the Coliseum for a Final 4 matchup against Timnath on Friday.
