In this article, we’ll get a four-weeks-out-from-state birds-eye view of the 4A Girls state team title race. In large part, I’ve accomplished this by scoring the MaxPreps rankings for each of the 19 state events for 4A Girls. I’ve shown the tenth-ranked athlete in each case to provide at least one quick answer to the question of, “Who would move up into a scoring position if we had a scratch?”

As the hypothetical state meet results show, Niwot is in a position of control. More or less absolute control. There isn’t anyone in the 4A Girls field who can keep pace with the Niwot talent and depth, particularly in the events from 400 through 3200 meters. Niwot could absorb all kinds of losses, both before and during state, and still come out on top. There’s no other way to see it.
And, Niwot even has, for the first time in my memory, the potential to score points in the throws in the person of Jade West. It’s simply relentless.
The battle for second, however, appears to be a lively one. Mullen, largely on the strength of Agur Dwol and Kilah Freelon, holds second place in a scoring of the rankings, but the Mustangs don’t have the kind of margin that offers a lot of comfort four weeks out from state.
Mesa Ridge, Thompson Valley, Erie, and Vista Peak each have spots of talent that, on a solid state meet outing, could overtake Mullen if Mullen is somehow not fully on top of their game at state (though it’s hard to imagine Agur Dwol not winning the long and triple jump at state).
For the relays shown above, probably only Erie faces a serious choice at state. Lily Meskers seemingly figures on the qualifiers for each of the 4×100, 4×200, and 4×400 for Erie. She also figures in the 100, 200, and 400. On that reading, at least two events will have to be jettisoned for Meskers at state. That could potentially present some problems for Erie’s trophy hopes.
Niwot, we will presume, has the depth to run very strong relays even in the case that they do have to pull a top athlete or two off those relays. To date, however, Niwot isn’t setting up to load any athletes—aside from Kimora Northrup—especially heavily in individual events.
