DENVER – Two years ago, the Montrose girls basketball team made it to the Denver Coliseum and lost in its first game at the state of the state championships.
The girls had a mission this year to get back to Denver Coliseum this year and be anything but a one-and-done. They fended off a great performance from Air Academy Kinley Asp to come away with a 61-54 win over the Kadets. They’ll return to the Coliseum on Friday to face Green Mountain in the state semifinals.
“We were talking about it this morning and started thinking oh crap, do we belong here,” senior Mayce Oberg said. “But we do belong here, and I ‘m really proud of everyone for being able to come out here and fight.”
Oberg led the Red Hawks with 20 while Landree Johnson had 14 and Maggie Legg had 13.
Legg also had the task of defending Asp, who went for a game-high 36.
“She likes [the challenge],” coach Steve Skiff said. “That’s her mentality. We challenge her and we tell her we need stops and we need this to happen, and she’s going to do it.”
Skiff said the team will take the long bus ride home and work hard for a few days before heading back to Denver to face Green Mountain.
