Early storylines out of big-school girls basketball include surprises (Arapahoe at 6A No. 1) and well … some things most of us probably could have predicted months ago (lots of Brihanna Crittendon scoring the basketball).
We’re a little over a month into the season and it’s the Warriors (9-0) — a .500 team and a postseason one-and-done in 2024-25 — atop the CHSAA’s Class 6A Selection and Seeding Index. To start 2026, the No. 1 team in the state beat No. 21 Rock Canyon and No. 22 Fruita Monument by a combined 67 points.
Add it all up and Arapahoe has scored 60 or more points in seven of its first nine games.
Sixty is also the number of points Crittendon scored … in her final two games of 2025.
The University of Texas commit scored 20 or more points for the ninth straight time in a loss to Sierra Canyon (California) on Dec. 20. The 12th-ranked Ravens lost to No. 13 Legend on Monday, the same team that beat them in last year’s 6A Final Four. But individual stats weren’t readily available.
Here’s what’s on the docket for the rest of the week in 6A-4A.
Class 6A
Broomfield at Valor Christian, Saturday at 6 p.m.
In a top-10 matchup, No. 2 Broomfield and No. 7 Valor Christian headline this weekend’s slate of games.
Broomfield (7-0) hasn’t had much trouble through its first seven games.
A lot of that is thanks to sophomore Reece Gilpatrick, the U16 Team USA gold medalist who is averaging 17.1 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.3 blocks this winter.
Last season, Valor Christian (5-2) got the better of Broomfield, 79-62, as Peyton Jones went off for a career-high 45 points.
On Monday, Jones, a Utah commit, scored a season-high 27 in a win against Grandview. She’s averaging 22.4 PPG this winter.
Class 5A
Pueblo East vs. Falcon at the Canon City Tournament, Thursday at 3 p.m.
The two teams treated fans to a thriller last weekend, with No. 11 Pueblo East rallying to beat No. 12 Falcon 71-66.
Freshman Dejanay Arrington went 4 of 6 from deep and scored a career-high 25 points for East in that game, while senior Myah Abeyta added 20, giving her 20 or more points in three of her last four games.
Falcon, outscored 23-15 in the final quarter, lost despite a balanced attack that saw five players score in double figures ,led by senior Cobelyn Wiesner with 20.
On Tuesday, the Falcons (4-2) dropped their second game of the season in a 50-36 loss to No. 8 Palmer Ridge.
Class 4A
Timnath at Berthoud, Friday at 6 p.m.
Timnath beat Berthoud in all three of the teams’ meetings last season, including in a 20-point win in the second round of the 4A postseason.
Timnath ended up in the Final Four a season ago and is currently third in the rankings. It moved to 8-1 on the season with a win over 5A No. 34 Severance on Tuesday.
Berthoud, also 8-1 this season, is led by junior Sofia Sigg, who is second in the state in scoring (25 PPG) and first in steals (9.4). The Spartans’ lone loss of the winter came against No. 4 Sterling, 59-57, on Dec. 13.
