The action in prep boys basketball is definitely ramping up in January.
This is the month teams start discovering what their true identity is – and if they have the makeup not only to qualify for state but also win a coveted state crown.
In the latest Class 3A CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index, there isn’t a change at the top as Forge Christian (10-0) and Strasburg (9-0) are manning those spots. One team that did make a slight move is Banning Lewis Academy (8-0) sliding into the No. 3 spot.
The Stallions have never won a boys state basketball title, but did finish third at the 2024 state tourney and they are searching for ultimate glory this season.
BLA will try and keep its undefeated training rolling down the track this week.
In 2A, Twin Peaks Classical Academy (10-0) is still in the No. 1 spot in CHSAA’s rankings, followed by Byers (7-1) and Sanford (10-0).
There was some shuffling in the 1A Index this past week as now the top three teams are Cheyenne Wells (7-1), McClave (6-1) and Flatirons Academy (7-1).
Here’s a snapshot of some games to keep an eye on in the coming days in Class 3A through 1A.
Class 3A
Banning Lewis Academy (8-0) at Lamar (7-1), 4 p.m., Saturday
This will be a great test for the Stallions, who were mentioned above. They have outscored their opponents by a whopping 605 to 277 during their undefeated season so far – heading into their home game against Manitous Springs Thursday.
BLA has been led by star point guard Matthew Lebron. The senior is averaging a team-best 25.1 ppg.
Fellow senior Jordan Jones is chipping in 10.4 ppg and another senior Zander Muna is dishing out 8.4 assists per game and averaging nearly five steals every outing.
Lamar will try to counter the BCA attack with its own talent. The Thunder is No. 9 in the 4A Selection & Seeding Index and have just the one loss to Aspen 44-42 on Dec. 12.
The Thunder, which hasn’t played since defeating Salida (60-35) on Dec. 20, travel to La Junta for a 7:30 p.m. game Thursday, before hosting BLA.
Lamar is paced offensively by junior Jacob Dunning 15.3 ppg and senior post Alex Williams 13.1 ppg.
The Thunder has had a storied athletic tradition but of the 14 boys state titles won by the school only one has come in boys basketball and that was in 1961.
Class 2A
Windsor Charter Academy (7-2) at Golden View Academy (7-1), 1:30 p.m., Saturday
Windsor Charter Academy, No. 7 in the 3A Index, has a busy weekend ahead to get battle tested.
On Friday, WCA takes Wiggins (8-2), No. 4 in 3A, and then has to get pumped up again to take on Golden View Academy, No. 4 in 2A.
WCA is 2-2 in its last four games, most recently trouncing Wray (72-37) on Jan. 13. The Firebirds are paced on offense by Dayton Long. The junior is pouring in 23.9 ppg. Senior Andrew Schams comes in with a 19.2 ppg clip.
Golden View Academy is coming off a 71-33 drubbing of Nederland. The Sentinels lone defeat was 41-37 on Dec. 5 to top-ranked Twin Peaks Classical Academy.
GVA is paced by the 1-2 punch of Jacob Walker (17.4 ppg) and Luke Chronowski (13.4 ppg).
Class 1A
Idalia (4-4) at Otis (5-2), 7:30 p.m., Friday
There’s no better time than now for No. 31 Idalia to start moving up the 1A rankings, and a win over No. 14 Otis would do just that.
After a tough start, Idalia has strung together three wins in a row over Briggsdale (53-29), St. Francis (50-37) and Hi-Plains (56-27).
Idalia’s top scorers are Broderick Kite (13 ppg) and Kolby Morris (11.1 ppg).
Otis counters Idalia with a four-game winning binge, including muscling past Haxtun (63-52) on Jan. 13.
The Bulldogs are powered by senior Grady Bechtle. The center is averaging 15.4 ppg and 13.4 rebounds per game.
