Christmas break is in the rearview mirror for Colorado’s prep basketball teams.
Now, as the calendar flips to 2026 teams will start to separate themselves from each other with the ultimate goal of qualifying for state tournaments and capturing coveted state titles.
That’s definitely the case in the Class 3A, 2A and 1A boys basketball ranks.
In 3A, Forge Christian is clearly a team on the state championship radar, posting a 9-0 record.
Forge most recently won a Class state boys basketball crown in 2023, beating Salida 54-47.
Other teams turning heads in 3A are Strasburg (7-0), the 3A state runner-up, and reigning 3A state champion Resurrection Christian (4-1).
In 2A, Twin Peaks Classical Academy (8-0) is atop CHSAA’s Selection and Seeding Index, followed by Simla (3-1) and Sanford (8-0).
Elbert (2-0), Cheyenne Wells (6-0) and Flat Irons Academy (5-1) are 1, 2, and 3 in the 1A CHSAA Index.
Here’s a sample of some intriguing games to keep an eye on in the coming days in 3A, 2A and 1A.
Class 3A
Wiggins (7-1) at Strasburg (7-0), 7:30 p.m., Jan. 13
This is a big clash to start out the new year.
Wiggins is sitting atop the CHSAA rankings with a 7-1 record.
The Tigers are coming off a narrow 67-64 victory over Byers on Jan. 6 and will host Merino (2-4) at 7 p.m., Friday before visiting Strasburg for a battle.
Wiggins lost its season opener 44-43 to Fort Morgan on Dec. 5 and has since run off seven wins in a row.
Senior Michael Adamson leads the team with an 18.6 ppg average. Fellow senior Jackson Adams is adding 11 ppg.
Strasburg has been electric this season, scoring at least 70 points in every game, highlighted by an 89-23 outburst in a victory Bennett on Dec. 16.
Prior to facing Wiggins, Strasburg has games against Woodland Park (1-5), at 6 p.m., Jan. 8, and at Wray (3-4), 4 p.m., Jan. 10.
The Indians are paced by a trio of players averaging double-digit points-per game in Brody Hopwood (20.3 ppg); Nick Glatfelter (15 ppg) and Cade Hemphill (13 ppg).
Class 2A
Kim/Branson (2-4) at Trinidad (6-0), 2 p.m., Jan. 10
The story of this game is Trinidad. The Miners are making some early-season noise, posting a 6-0 record.
The Miners have never won a boys basketball state title in its school’s history, and the 2025-26 Trinidad squad would love to change that narrative.
Trinidad has won six boys state titles in its history, five in football and one in boys tennis. However, it has been a long drought as the last title was in football in 1991.
The Miners top scorers are Xavier Garcia (13.8 ppg); Cole Gegelman (13.6 ppg) and Jeremiah Romero (11 ppg).
The Co-op Kim/Branson team entertains Primero (2-4) at 6 p.m., Thursday before clashing with Trinidad.
Kim/Branson’s top scorer is Trotter Watkins. The senior is scoring 18.5 ppg.
Class 1A
Granada (4-1) at Cheyenne Wells (6-0), 6 p.m., Friday
This is an early season bout that is intriguing. Cheyenne Wells is second in CHSAA’s rankings as mentioned above, and the Tigers will try and keep their perfect season intact when they square off against Granada.
Cheyenne Wells is led by the dynamic Corey Hill. The senior is pouring in 27.5 ppg. Fellow senior Trey Scheler is adding 10.8 ppg.
Following the Granada tilt, Cheyenne Wells will travel to Springfield (2-4) Saturday for a 2 p.m., match-up.
Cheyenne Wells knows how to reach the state boys basketball summit as it won the 1A title in 2024.
Granada, meanwhile, has won eight boys state championship team titles in its school’s history, including two in basketball with the last coming in 1991.
Granada is sitting No. 19 in the latest RPI rankings and is coming off a tough loss to McClave 68-24 on Dec. 20. McClave (5-1) is No. 5 in the 1A CHSAA rankings.
Granada’s freshman Edgurr Morales leads the team in scoring at 16.8 ppg. Junior Alejandro Perez has 15 ppg clip for the Bobcats.
