The second season – known as the postseason – is now on tap for the boys’ basketball teams in Class 3A, 2A and 1A.
The playoffs begin Friday in the respective 32-team state brackets in the three classes.
The quest for state supremacy is underway. Drama is ready to unfold and memories will be made. Let the fun begin.
With that in mind, here’s a sampling of opening-round games to glance over and digest,
Class 3A
No. 12 St. Mary’s (16-7) vs. No. 21 Bayfield (14-9), 6:30 p.m., Friday, at Peyton Regional
This game definitely has some intrigue. Since Jan. 31, St. Mary’s has been up and down posting a 6-5 record in that timespan.
The Pirates ended the regular season on a high note with a 65-60 win over Colorado Springs Christian on Feb. 28.
If St. Mary’s wants to continue its season beyond this weekend it is going to need some big performances from their three double-digit scorers – senior Jeremiah Starr (12 ppg); and sophomores Kisean Dawson (11.6 ppg) and Cruz Artaechevarria (11 ppg).
Bayfield, which is in Southwest Colorado, 25 minutes East of Durango, didn’t finish the season on a roll as it posted a 4-5 record in its final nine regular season games, including a 46-44 victory over Pagosa Springs on Feb. 28.
The Wolverines will counter St. Mary’s with some scorers of their own in juniors Hayes Malone (12.1 ppg) and Drew Jepson (9.5 ppg).
The winner of the St. Mary’s-Bayfield contest will meet No. 5 Peyton (20-3) vs. Platte Valley (10-13), victor at 1 p.m., Saturday at Peyton High School.
Class 2A
No. 8 Merino (14-9) vs. No. 25 Hoehne (12-11), 5:15 p.m., Friday, Merino Region
Merino enters the postseason on an eight-game winning streak. The Rams have not lost since a 66-28 setback against Simla on Jan. 31.
Merino finished the season with wins over Sedgwick County (64-41); Holyoke (48-42) and Limon (52-40).
The Rams offense is paced by freshman JJ Powell (13 ppg) and junior Zavier Trenkle (9.5 ppg). Hoehne answers back with senior Jacob Magninat (15 ppg).
The winner of this game faces the No. 9 Limon (14-9) vs. No. 24 Holyoke (8-15) at 2:45 p.m., Saturday at Merino High School.
Class 1A
No. 13 Denver Jewish Day (13-9) vs. No. 20 Holly (13-10), 2 p.m., Friday at Flatirons Academy
Denver Jewish Academy was riding a four-game winning streak before losing to Denver Waldorf (45-35) on Feb. 26.
Denver Jewish Academy’s offense is stirred by seniors Solly Bielsky (24.8 ppg) and Ronen Trujillo (9.4 ppg). Holly’s top offensive threat is junior Drayden Williams (12 ppg and 11.1 rebounds per game).
The Wildcats have been reeling of late, posting a 3-4 record in their final seven games, including losing to McClave 69-46 on Feb. 27.
The winner of Denver Jewish Day clashes with the winner between No. 4 Flatirons Academy (19-4) vs. No. 29 Flagler (11-12), at 1 p.m., Saturday.
