The postseason is underway in Class 6A and 5A boys and girls basketball.
As for 3A, 2A and 1A boys and girls hoops, the playoffs are on the brink as the teams close out their seasons on Feb. 28.
In Class 1A, 2A and 3A the teams that qualify for the postseason will be placed in their respective 32-teams state brackets after the regular season. Seeds 1 through 8 will host regionals. Seeds 9-16 are true seeded except to try and avoid league matchups in the first round only.
When understanding how the seeding works that’s why this final week is so important.
So, here’s a sampling of games that will help shape the postseason brackets. This week could be a preview of the excitement to come in the playoffs.
Class 3A
Wiggins (15-6) at Eaton (17-4), 6 p.m., Friday
Wiggins has a grand opportunity to move up in the 3A rankings and have a chance to host regionals. The Tigers are No. 9 in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index and can likely move up at least one spot if they can derail Eaton, especially since Eaton is No. 6 in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index.
Wiggins is riding a three-game winning streak claiming victories over Frontier Academy (69-47); Wray (63-60) and Yuma (67-66). The Tigers are paced by Michael Adamson (14.9 ppg); and Jackson Adams (11.5 ppg).
Eaton has won nine consecutive games, its most recent victory over reigning 3A state champions Resurrection Christian (50-40).
Eaton’s top scorers are Crew Haythorn (17.5 ppg); Austin Crider 11.3 ppg); and Ely Madaleno (11 ppg).
Class 2A
Front Range Christian (15-6) at Flatirons Academy (18-3), 7 p.m., Friday
Front Range is No. 9 in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index in 2A, and has a key match-up with Flatirons Academy, No. 4 in the Seeding Index in 1A, at 7 p.m., Friday. The Falcons just lost to Flatirons Academy (71-58) on Feb. 19.
Front Range will need another big game from its top scorers Haedan Morton (15.9 ppg); Zach Woo (14.4 ppg); and Caleb Harms (12.5 ppg).
Flatirons counters with Gunnar Ast (16.7 ppg); Jackson Schulz (16.5 ppg); and Caleb Doughty (16.4 ppg). The Bison had won 10 games in a row before losing to SkyView Academy (70-57) on Feb. 24.
This game will likely be doing some moving and shaking in the final regular Seeding Index.
Class 1A
Sangre de Cristo (19-2) at Sierra Grande (17-4), 6 p.m., Friday
This is a huge late-season battle: Sangre is No. 12 in the Seeding Index and Sierra Grande is No, 9. Sangre has won four games in a row, including a 61-30 victory over Trinidad on Feb. 24.
Sangre will try to avenge a 48-45 loss to Sierra Grande on Feb. 13. Sangre is paced offensively by Deagon Rogers (18.6 ppg); and Ezra Lopez (10.3 ppg). Sierra Grande will answer with Jadyn Martinez (19.8 ppg); Rolando Najera (15.2 ppg); and Nehemiah Wilson (8.3 ppg).
The winner of this game will put itself in a strong position to possibly move into the Top 8.
