The boys basketball season is still young, but there is no harm in looking at who is playing well early in the season. With teams not even having a handful of games under their belt, this is still a fluid topic but here is how the top scorers in each classification are shaping up.

**

Class 6A

Smoky Hill’s Rickey Mitchell has started his senior season off with a bang. He started the year scoring 21 points against Kent Denver before exploding for 38 points to lead the Buffaloes over Rangeview. He’s averaging 29.5 points through two games which leads the new 6A class.

Through three games, Mullen’s Jordan Leslie is averaging 27.7 points per game and Fort Collins’ Luke Wagstaff is right behind him at 25. Fountain-Fort Carson’s Antonio Joseph Martinez is averaging 22.8 points per game but has one of the best individual game performances this season, scoring 41 points in a win against Conifer. He also knocked down nine 3-pointers in that effort and both numbers are now school records.

Class 5A

It’s no surprise that Pueblo South’s Maurice Austin is leading the 5A field by scoring 31 points per game. He scored a season-high 37 in a win over Falcon. He grabbed his first double-double of the year when he scored 23 and grabbed 11 rebounds in a win over Far Northeast.

Frederick’s Luke Justice pounded the gavel with a big 29-point effort to lead the Golden Eagles to a win over Mead to open the season. He is averaging 27 points per game through two games this season.

While Air Academy doesn’t have the top scorer, it does have a solid combo as Noah Hellem (22.7 ppg) and Corbin Carver (19.7 ppg) are each in the top 12 of 5A.

Class 4A

Severance big man Ty Adams has been dominant in his time on the floor so far. In two games he’s averaging a double-double with 30 points per game (to lead all 4A scorers) and 11 rebounds. The Silver Knights are undefeated heading into Thursday’s showdown with Resurrection Christian.

Lutheran’s Braydon Jacob gave his scoring average a bump with a 40-point performance in a three-point loss to Ponderosa on Saturday. He’s second in 4A at 25.5 points per game.

Weld Central’s Tyler Branch, DSST: Montview’s Kamrin Joyce and Jefferson’s Salman Ali are the other three players averaging more than 20 points per game in the classification.

Class 3A

The top two scorers in 3A each have just one game under their belt as Platte Valley’s Zach Uyemura leads all 3A scorers with 26 points per game and The Pinnacle’s Robert McClinton is right behind him at 24.

St. Mary’s guard Ely Ferrara has gone for 30 points twice and is fourth in the class with 22.2 points per game and leads all shooters with 15 made 3-pointers.

Class 2A

Only three players in 2A are averaging 25 points per game or more. Holyoke’s Cash Weber leads the group with 27, although he has played in just one game. he scored 27 in a 66-60 loss to Burlington, but should be a dominant scorer in the classification this season.

Caliche’s Tanner Gerk is just one point per game behind Weber and his distribution is even as he scored 26 point in each of Caliche’s two wins this season. Del Norte’s Camden Crowell is third with 25 points which came in a 73-26 win over Ellicott.

Class 1A

Belleview Christian’s Nathaniel Owen started the season with a 32-point game to lead the Bruins to a win over Lyons. His scoring effort has slowed a little bit but Belleview Christian has been on the winning side of some lopsided games early in the year. He’s averaging 25.3 points per game through three games which is more than two points better than De Beque’s Scottie Vines.

Cripple Creek-Victor’s Tony Woods has also played three games and is averaging 22.7 points per game. His best effort of the year is 34 points which he got in a 66-44 loss to Moffat.
