Let the postseason commence.
Granted, the boys lacrosse regular season hasn’t quite wrapped up. That won’t happen until Saturday.
But the 24-team bracket will be seeded Sunday. That means at this time next week, the playoffs will be underway. The Class 4A first round is set for Tuesday, May 5, with 5A following on May 6.
It’s a quick turnaround. The state semifinals are set for May 16 at the University of Denver’s Peter Barton Stadium, with the title games just two days later.
That’s five rounds in just 14 days.
Going into the final four days of the regular season, Valor Christian, Cherry Creek, Regis Jesuit, Arapahoe and Lakewood are in the top five in the Selection & Seeding Index in 5A. The Bruins and Raiders play each other Friday.
In 4A, Air Academy, Grand Junction, Evergreen, Aspen and Lutheran are the current top five.
Here is a quick look at a game to watch in each classification headed into the final few days of the regular season:
Class 5A
Regis Jesuit at Cherry Creek, 6 p.m., Friday, May 1
It’s only fitting to kick off the final month of the season with a non-league clash between 5A powerhouses in one final tuneup for the postseason. Defending state champion Cherry Creek, which defeated No. 4 Arapahoe 13-7 on Tuesday night, has not lost since May 19. … Regis Jesuit (13-1) bounced back from its first loss of the season April 21 with victories over Castle View and Rock Canyon. A victory over the Bruins could propel the team to the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.
Class 4A
Steamboat Springs at Aspen, 6 p.m., Thursday, April 30
While these two teams are in the same league, the second go-round this season won’t count toward the league standings. Steamboat Springs (8-5) had not played since a one-goal loss to Battle Mountain on April 16 before upsetting fourth-ranked Lutheran 9-8 on Tuesday. When the Sailors and Skiers played back on March 19, Aspen needed two overtimes to overcome Steamboat. … Aspen (11-2) fell to Grand Junction 8-7 on April 23 despite three goals and an assist from sophomore Nate Moatz. The Skiers responded with a 5-4 victory over No. 8 Battle Mountain on Tuesday.
