One of the things I learned from previous Deep Dives is just how long it takes. I knew that already, but I was enough years removed from the last time I did it that the memory of it all had faded a bit.
So, this time around, I endeavored to be smarter about how I did it. I would take the MaxPreps rankings for 2A Boys, score them, and then let that table do a large share of the talking.
So, if we score the rankings as of April 21, here’s how the 2A Boys state meet comes out (and do take a moment to note how close it is at the top):

The first thing these results tell us is that the race for the first-place trophy in 2A Boys is not even close to being settled at this point. That’s bad news if you’re Yuma, but it’s great news for Banning Lewis Prep and Ouray. It’s conditional good news if you’re Centauri. It’s a sliver a light shining through a barely-open door if you’re Limon. For anyone else, it’s probably a matter of indifference—at least as far as a state title goes.
One of the reasons Yuma comes out on top at this point, is that they’re scoring points across the board—with the exception of distance events. As 2A teams go, Yuma is nicely balanced. A breakdown at state in one or two events isn’t likely to undo the whole deal.
Roughly the same could be said, though, for Banning Lewis Prep and Ouray. Banning Lewis doesn’t figure for points in the sprints and may or may not score in the throws. Ouray does not appear to be a threat to score in the throws. Centauri and Limon will have to lean harder on limited sets of event specialties if they are to come out on top.
Needless to say, an injury to a key athlete would be devastating for the state title hopes of any of these times.
Key athletes for Yuma figure to be sprinter Clay Robinson, hurdler Beau Tate, and jumper Jaxson Lungwitz. For Banning Lewis Prep it’s Nate Early—hard to say whether he’s more hurdles or jumps—and distance runner Jonathan Wiggins. For Ouray, it’s middle distance type Paton Edwards.
One key factor, maybe the key factor, in determining the eventual team state champion will be relays. Typically, there’s at least one team in the hunt that figures to have to offload a relay or two to accommodate individual events for a key athlete. That may not be the case in this year’s field, however.
So far, Yuma hasn’t gone big into relays. That may change—and we need to watch for it in case it does happen—but neither Clay Robinson nor Beau Tate figures to be excessively taxed at state unless Yuma makes a big commitment toward relays.
Banning Lewis Prep probably needs to watch the lap count for Jonathan Wiggins. It may be that the Stallions forego using Wiggins in the 4×800 at state as a means of keeping his burn level at state to a sustainable level. For now, at least, Banning Lewis isn’t projecting for points at state in the 4×800. Nate Early probably will four-event at state, but two hurdle events, and jump, and a 4×400 is a manageable set of events as four-eventing goes (it’s never easy to four-event at state).
Probably the most critical relay situation at state among the top teams centers around Paton Edwards of Ouray. We know where Edwards stands in the 400 and 800. We can infer he’s part of Ouray’s standing in the 4×400 and 4×800. It’s probably safe to assume that Edwards ditches the 100 at state. As far as four-eventing goes, however, there probably is no tougher four-event combination than the 400, 4×400, 800, and 4×800. If there is a tougher combination, it would have to involve the 300 hurdles.
Suffice it to say, Ouray faces a couple of tough decisions at state.
A similar dilemma assuredly faces Centauri as they try to put the pieces together in the right way to maximize their hopes for a state title. Mason Claunch figures in a big way in each of the 100, 200, and 400. It doesn’t take a whopping lot of imagination to guess that he’s played a role in the Falcons’ top-ranked 4×100 and 4×200 relays. But, four events is the limit at state. Something—at least one thing—has to give for Claunch. And Centauri will have to figure out what to do with the event or events that give way for Claunch’s other events.
It’s too early to project what that will be. But we can say with assurance that something will be.
Limon’s hopes—more distant as they appear at this time—seem to be well enough spread across the board that relays probably don’t figure to bring any major event decisions for their guys capable of scoring individual points at state. And, for that reason, Limon might well be able to sneak up on some of the top teams at the state meet. Whether or not they can sneak up on all of them remains to be seen.
Regardless, 2A Boys should be one of the most intensely-contested state titles in another month. You’ll want to hang around to see how this one plays out. Things will change between now and the state meet, but it’s doubtful we’ll see any changes consequential enough to alter the fundamental nature of the battle that lays before us.
