Like Colorado weather, the prep baseball team can be quite unpredictable.
There are your powerhouse teams with state championship legacies – and then there are other teams that are trying to make a name for themselves as the season progresses.
Here’s what the top five look like in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index in Class 3A: Eaton (10-1); University (12-2); Prospect Ridge Academy (9-3); Aspen (7-1); and Woodland Park (10-0).
In 2A, Forge Christian (10-0); Monte Vista (12-0); Dayspring Christian (7-3); Limon (7-3); and Yuma (6-4). As for 1A, Flatirons Academy (11-1); Haxtun (9-3); McClave (11-1); Eads (9-1); and Merino (8-6).
For all the teams in the Top 5, there are teams that are trying to make noise and not just be an afterthought for the state playoffs. Here are some games to digest with that thought process in mind.
Class 3A
Wellington (9-6) at Mountain View (6-6), noon, April 18
After losing two games to Class 4A’s top team in the seeding index – Roosevelt (9-5 and 13-5), Wellington bounced back with a trio of wins over Thompson Valley (4-1), and Greeley Central (7-2, and 10-0).
Wellington is led by Nate Blehm (.429), Cade Keller (.405) and Jaxson Pulley (.391). Mountain View is just inside the top 40 in the 4A Seeding Index. It will counter with Noah Hoffman (.429), Jevin Dorcey (.389) and Mason Belk (.333).
The loser of the game on April 18, will have a chance at revenge as the two teams will meet again at 4 p.m., April 20 in Wellington.
A win – or better yet a sweep – could help Wellington move up from the No. 19 spot in the Seeding Index.
Class 2A
Ignacio (6-3) at Dolores (5-6), noon, April 16
Ignacio is No. 22 in the 2A Seeding Index and is riding a two-game winning streak and has won six of its last seven games. The Bobcats’ top hitters are Sonny Flores (.600), Stoney White Thunder-Lucero (.500) and William Mendoza (.500). Dolores is coming off a 13-10 win over Nucla and is No. 33 in the Seeding Index.
Dolores receives its offensive firepower from Isaac Samulski (.588), Brandon Lee (.500) and Kooper Thomas (.417). A win here could be a swing game for Dolores and on the other hand help Ignacio keep edging up the Seeding Index.
Class 1A
Simla (5-4) at Kiowa (8-4), 4:30 p.m., April 16
Kiowa is No. 13 in the Class 1A Seeding Index and has a great opportunity to move up. Simla is No. 12 in the 1A chart. So, this is a key match-up in 1A at this juncture in the season.
Kiowa is coming off a 13-2 victory over Elbert on April 14. The Indians, who are 2-2 in their last four games, are paced by Caden Watt (.535), Rowan Golden (.514) and Austin Hundley (.419). After losing to Peyton 15-7 on April 11, Simla hammered Custer County (15-5) on April 14.
The Cubs are fueled offensively by Tatum Kocerha (.700), Logan Rayfield (.571) and Ethan Kissam (.467).
