That’s the case with the Class 3A, 2A and 1A boys basketball teams. The eight teams in these classifications are vying for respective state supremacy March 12-14.
The Class 3A tourney consists of No. 1 Strasburg (23-2) vs. No. 9 Wiggins (18-7); No. 13 Colorado Springs Christian (18-7) vs. No. 12 St. Mary’s (18-7); No. 2 Forge Christian (23-2) vs. No. 7 Windsor Charter Academy (18-7); and No. 3 Banning Lewis Academy (23-2) vs. Resurrection Christian (18-7) at the University of Denver’s Hamilton Gym.
RC is the reigning 3A champ, defeating Strasburg 55-42 last year.
In 2A, the bracket consists of No. 1 Sanford (23-1) vs. No. 9 Limon (16-9); No. 13 Plateau Valley (16-8) vs. No. 5 Golden View Classical Academy (21-4); No. 2 Simla (20-4) vs. No. 7 Vail Christian (18-4); and No. 3 Heritage Christian (19-6) vs. No. 6 Byers (20-5) at Colorado State University-Fort Collins’ Moby Arena.
Simla is the defending state champ beating Crowley County (56-51).
As for 1A, the bracket is as follows: No. 1 McClave (23-2) vs. No. 8 Elbert (18-7); No. 4 Flatirons Academy (21-4) vs. No. 5 Stratton (22-3); No. 2 Nucla (25-0) vs. No. 10 Sierra Grande (20-5); and No. 3 Cheyenne Wells (23-2) vs. No. 6 Prairie (21-4) at University of Northern Colorado’s Bank of Colorado Arena.
McClave ousted Flatirons Academy 59-43 to win state a year ago.
Class 3A
No. 13 Colorado Springs Christian (18-7) vs. No. 12 St. Mary’s (18-7), 10:15 a.m., March 12
This is an intriguing match-up for several reasons. First off, a No. 12 or No. 13 seed is going to advance to the semifinals.
Colorado Springs Christian is coming off a 73-72 win over No. 4 Yuma, while St. Mary’s upended Peyton (58-52).
Colorado Springs Christian is paced by Maximiliano Cota-Cordova who is pouring in 23.8 ppg. Sam Salsbery is scoring 17.1 ppg. St. Mary’s will counter with Jeremiah Starr (12.3 ppg) and Kisean Dawson (11.3 ppg) and Cruz Artaechevarria (11.2 ppg). The winner of this game advances to play the Strasburg-Wiggins winner at 11:30 a.m., Friday.
Class 2A
No. 3 Heritage Christian (19-6) vs. No. 6 Byers (20-5), 10:15 a.m., March 12
Heritage Christian is coming off a 57-34 victory over Campion Academy and has won three games in a row. HC is led by Alec Lundy (15 ppg); Guede Wade (12.5 ppg); and Caleb Trujillo (12.2 ppg). Byers is also riding a three-game winning streak beating Holyoke (78-42); Fowler (66-30) and Swallows Charter Academy (64-36).
The winner of this game takes on the Simla-Vail Christian winner at 5:30 p.m., March 13.
Class 1A
No. 4 Flatirons Academy (21-4) vs. No. 5 Stratton (22-3), 1:15 p.m., March 12
Flatirons, which was the state runner-up a year ago, will have a tough test facing Stratton.
Flatirons has won two straight games over Flagler (56-46) and Holly (58-36). The Bison are powered by Jackson Schulz (16.6 ppg); Gunnar Ast (16.5 ppg); and Caleb Doughty (15 ppg). Stratton is in the midst of a four-game winning streak, including a 56-48 victory over Sangre de Cristo on March 7.
The Eagles’ top scorers are Von Isenbart (18.7 ppg) and Ricky Schillig (11.3 ppg). The winner of this game meets the victor between No. 1 McClave-No. 8 Elbert at 5:30 p.m., March 13.
