The crown jewel of high school wrestling – the 2025 state tournament – concluded Feb. 16 crowning all the individual girls and boys champions and team winners.
Now, the basketball regular is ending in the next two weeks and the postseason looms in Class 3A, 2A and 1A. The 32-team state tournament brackets in each classification are set to be released following the completion of league tournaments next week.
There have been plenty of players stepping into the spotlight and here’s a sample of some head turners and some games to watch.
LYONS LIONS ROARING: With just one game left its regular season the Lyons Lions have found their groove in 3A. They have won four games in a row and have been paced offensively by Caleb Christiansen (21.6 ppg and 4.1 asp), and Zeke Paznokas (13.6 ppg).
The Lions, who have posted a 10-2 record in their last 12 games, cap their regular season with a game at Clear Creek (5-14) at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Christiansen’s scoring prowess is no fluke. A year ago, he averaged 19.5 ppg.
DON’T COUNT OUT LIMON: The Limon Badgers are the reigning 2A state champs, and it has taken a while this season, but the Badgers are finally flexing their muscles.
Limon has posted a 5-1 record in its last six games, including a 44-37 win over Fowler on Feb. 15.
Leading the way for the Badgers are the junior trio of Keagan Mellott (10.8 ppg), Drey Tacha (9.1 ppg) and Brody Scherrer (6.6 ppg).
The Badgers have a huge game ahead with Stratton (13-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
GRANADA MAKING POSTSEASON PUSH: The Granada Bobcats have had their share of athletic success in their school’s history. This version of the Bobcats is trying to position themselves to get into the postseason.
Granada has won five of its last six games and have moved up the power ranking chart. The Bobcats are led by Maddox Coleman (19.5 ppg), and Fernando Cadena (7.9 ppg).
Granada has five games left in its regular season – starting with games against Bethune and Cheraw and Thursday and Friday.
Class 3A
Banning Lewis Academy (16-3) at Colorado Springs Christian (9-10), 7 p.m., Friday
Banning Lewis Academy has had a stellar season, and the Stallions are trying to stay in the mix to open the postseason at home. Matthew Lebron (23.1 ppg) is the straw that stirs the Stallions offensive drink.
Colorado Springs Christian is paced by Maximiliano Cota-Cordova (15.7 ppg). A win by the Lions would likely solidify their spot in the 32-team state tournament. Colorado Springs Christian will conclude its season by hosting Lamar at 8 p.m., Feb. 25.
Class 2A
Crested Butte (9-9) at Sargent (6-12), 7 p.m., Friday
Crested Butte is desperately hanging on to a playoff berth and needs a couple of wins to end the season against Sargent and South Park (2-16), 7 p.m., Saturday.
CB’s offense is charged by Adin Kurak. The senior is averaging 21.9 ppg. Fellow seniors Eli Hulm (9.5 ppg) and Bridger Flores (9 ppg) are also part of a three-prong attack.
Class 1A
Cheraw (9-7) at Holly (11-7), 4 p.m., Thursday
Cheraw has struggled down the stretch posting a 2-4 record in its last four games, including a 64-44 loss to Springfield on Feb. 18. Now, Holly is next. A win against Holly could give Cheraw the boost it needs. Holly also is in a need of a win after losing its last games to Syracuse (65-48) and Kim/Branson (62-48).
Holly’s top scorers are seniors Devin Eaton (20.4 ppg) and Truman King (15.3 ppg).
