Five wins over its past six games has Rocky Mountain inside the projected Class 6A postseason field and — AND! — in striking position to win their league.
The Lobos (10-10, 7-2 6A/5A/4A Northern League) have moved inside the 6A bubble, currently sitting at No. 38 with two pathways to push their playoffs streak to 12 straight years.
If they win their final three games of the regular season, they’re a lock as they’d win at least a share of their league title with No. 19 Fossil Ridge, who they travel to face in their finale on Feb. 20.
Any other scenario — with a home game against No. 52 Poudre (Friday) and road game against 5A No. 6 Windsor also remaining — they should still have a great chance of making the 40-team field.
In this week’s look-in on 6A-4A boys’ basketball, let’s take a dive onto the postseason bubble. The 6A and 5A 40-team playoffs begin the final week of February. The 4A-1A 32-team postseason brackets start a week after that.
Class 6A
No. 38 Rocky Mountain: The Lobos (10-10) are a team no top seed probably wants to see in the opening round.
Winners of five of their past six, they’ve recently beat postseason locks in 5A No. 6 Windsor (Jan. 24) and 6A No. 31 Loveland (Tuesday).
No. 39 Castle View: The Sabercats (8-13) are 2-2 in their last four games, as wins over 6A No. 27 Legend (Jan. 31) and 5A No. 37 Ponderosa (Feb. 7) have kept them in the postseason mix.
Leading the way for them, 6-foot-4 senior Evan McKean is averaging 21.9 points and 7.1 rebounds this winter.
No. 40 Highlands Ranch: Behind George West III’s 15 points on just nine shots Tuesday, the Falcons (9-11) kept their postseason hopes alive with a win over No. 54 Fort Collins.
Their remaining schedule includes No. 22 Rock Canyon (Friday), No. 27 Legend (Feb. 18) and No. 6 ThunderRidge (Feb. 21) — a sturdy strength of schedule which should help their ranking down the stretch.
Other bubble teams: No. 41 Vista PEAK Prep (8-11) and No. 42 Mountain Range (9-12).
Class 5A
No. 39 Skyline: The Falcons (8-12) may need another win or two to keep their postseason spot.
They end the season at 4A No. 12 Holy Family Friday before finishing with home games against 6A No. 38 Centaurus and 5A No. 35 Silver Creek next week.
Thomas Martinez-Hernandez (11.2 PPG) has scored at least 14 points on 50% or better shooting in seven of his past eight games.
No. 40 Roosevelt: A recent four-game win streak has the Roughriders (11-9) in good position to snap a two-year postseason drought.
On Tuesday, they rallied from a 19-point halftime deficit to beat No. 31 Mountain View, 52-47. Nolan Peterson had 13 points and 11 rebounds as Roosevelt outscored the Mountain Lions 20-4 in the fourth quarter.
No. 41 Pueblo County: The Hornets have placed themselves in reach of the playoffs thanks to a current three-game winning streak.
This past week, they beat 4A No. 46 No. Pueblo Centennial, 3A No. 29 Colorado Springs Christian and 5A No. 26 Pueblo Central.
Next, they’re at home against No. 36 Pueblo South (Feb. 17) before traveling to No. 32 Pueblo East (Feb. 20) for their regular-season finale.
Other bubble teams: No. 38 Aurora Central (No. 38), No. 42 Widefield (9-10) and No. 43 Canon City (7-14).
Class 4A
No. 29 Pagosa Springs: The Pirates (6-12) have won two in a row, both against 3A bubble teams. They beat No. 27 Monte Vista by 19 (Feb. 7) and No. 30 Ignacio by six (Feb. 8) over the past week.
Friday, they can complete a season sweep over 4A No. 43 Alamosa. They beat the Mean Moose, 45-44, behind Seth Zeigler’s 16 points on Jan. 24.
No. 30 Delta: Two wins in their past three games have the Panthers (8-10) in a good spot.
They beat another bubble team, 4A No. 32 Steamboat Springs, in overtime on Jan. 31. JP Gallegos (16.2 PPG) led the way with 15 points.
Then a week ago, they avoided a ranking plunge with a 12-point win over No. 47 Rifle.
No. 32 Steamboat Springs: The Sailors (6-13) have four games remaining.
Two of them are against teams currently outside the playoff picture in No. 45 Moffat County (Friday) and No. 47 Rifle (Feb. 22).
The others come against No. 30 Delta (Feb. 21), where they’ll look to avenge their overtime loss from Jan. 31, and No. 24 Basalt (Feb. 28), who they beat by 14 a week ago.
Other bubble teams: No. 33 Village (7-9), No. 34 Elizabeth (7-11) and No. 35 Berthoud (6-12).
