The 40-team boys’ basketball postseason brackets for Class 6A and 5A have been released, with play-in games set for Tuesday.
The remaining classifications finish their regular season March 1.
In this week’s look-in on big-school boys basketball, we’ll run through the 16-team, play-in round in 6A and 5A. And in 4A, we’ll take a few games that will shape the final few spots of its upcoming 32-team postseason field.
Class 6A
No. 40 Castle View at No. 25 Grandview, 7 p.m.
No. 39 Vista PEAK Prep at No. 26 Legacy, 6:30 p.m.
Grandview (12-11) was pushed into the play-in round after losing back-to-back games to end the regular season, falling to 6A No. 14 Smoky Hill and No. 22 Overland in the 6A/5A Centennial League Tournament.
Before that, the Wolves had won five of six, beating No. 36 Cherry twice and Overland once.
Legacy (14-9), meanwhile, halted a two-game slide with a win over No. 30 Boulder on Saturday. Jaedon Ward, who is shooting 40% (59 of 148) from deep this season, had 22 points in the win.
No. 38 Pine Creek at No. 27 Loveland, 6:30 p.m.
No. 37 Columbine at No. 28 Denver East, 6:30 p.m.
Loveland (16-7) won the final three games of the season, beating 4A No. 14 Timnath and 5A No. 6 Windsor in its last two. In the overtime win over the Wizards on Thursday, Zane DeSouza (15 PPG, 9 RPG) had 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
Denver East (9-14) beat 4A No. 13 DSST: Green Valley Ranch and 6A No. 39 Vista PEAK Prep in its final two games of the season. James Murray (14 PPG) scored 16 points in each of those wins.
No. 36 Cherry Creek at No. 29 Legend, 7 p.m.
No. 35 Pueblo West at No. 30 Boulder, 6:30 p.m.
Legend (11-12) beat No. 21 Doherty in its regular-season finale to ensure a home game in the play-in round. Carson Flowers (18.4 PPG, 7.6 RPG) had 24 points and 11 rebounds in it.
Boulder (14-9) is led by the classification’s third-leading scorer, Cole Morrow (22.8 PPG). He’s scored at least 30 in five of his last 10 games.
No. 34 Rocky Mountain at No. 31 Heritage, 6:30 p.m.
No. 33 Cherokee Trail at No. 32 Erie, 6:30 p.m.
Heritage (11-12) comes out of the loaded 6A/5A Continental League, which features four teams in 6A’s top 10. The Eagles’ junior point guard Trystan Rangel (16.1 PPG) has scored at least 20 points in his last five games, including a season-high 28 in a win over Douglas County on Saturday.
Erie (12-11), meanwhile, nearly upended No. 8 Horizon to end the season, falling to the Hawks 51-50. The Tigers are 8-2 at home this season.
Class 5A
No. 40 Gateway at No. 25 Sand Creek, 6:30 p.m.
No. 39 Pueblo County at No. 26 Mullen, 6 p.m.
Gateway (9-14) wasn’t ranked in the top 40 in CHSAA’s final 5A rankings, but it made the field after winning the 5A/4A Colorado League Tournament. In the play-in, the Olympians will face Sand Creek (17-6), which went 10-1 at home this winter.
Mullen (9-14) is led by junior Mason Bonner (17.5 PPG, 10.5 RPG).
No. 38 Aurora Central at No. 27 Pueblo East, 6 p.m.
No. 37 Ponderosa at No. 28 Mountain View, 6:30 p.m.
Pueblo East (16-7) is allowing just 43.3 points per game this season and come into the playoffs on a six-game winning streak. Aurora Central (11-12) averages 51.6 PPG.
Mountain View (14-9) won its last three games of the season, all by at least 16 points. It is led by senior Dylan Garland (18.2 PPG).
No. 36 Wheat Ridge at No. 29 Thornton, 6:30 p.m.
No. 35 Silver Creek at No. 30 Thompson Valley, 6 p.m.
Thornton (17-6) finished 8-0 in the 5A/4A Colorado League but lost in the conference tournament final to Gateway.
Thompson Valley (14-9) has two prolific scorers in RJ Hale (19.7 PPG) and Dominic Shideler (16.8). Silver Creek has a standout scorer of its own in Luke Schmeeckle (15.2), who returned to the court in late January after tearing his ACL, MCL and meniscus in last year’s playoffs.
No. 34 Glenwood Springs at No. 31 Pueblo Central, 7 p.m.
No. 33 Pueblo South at No. 32 Golden, 6 p.m.
Pueblo Central (13-10) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 38-point win over Pueblo Centennial on Thursday. It beat Pueblo South (10-13) twice during the regular season.
Golden (13-10) will get a rematch with South after beating the Colts by nine in January.
Glenwood Springs (12-11) finished the regular season with three wins over its last four games. Its game against Central is also a rematch as it beat the Wildcats, 60-59, in December.
Class 4A bubble games
No. 32 Steamboat Springs at No. 28 Basalt, Friday at 7 p.m.
The Sailors (8-14) might need a win here to fend off No. 33 Berthoud for the final spot in the playoff field. They got a much-needed win over No. 46 Rifle on Saturday.
The Longhorns (9-12), meanwhile, seem to be in good shape to make the field with only No. 5 Fort Lupton and Steamboat Springs left on their schedule. They lost to No. 29 Delta by three on Saturday.
No. 33 Berthoud at No. 13 The Classical Academy, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
No. 18 Timnath at No. 33 Berthoud, Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Berthoud (9-12) has won four in a row to put itself in striking distance to make the field of 32. Its best win of the season came in a 62-54 victory at 5A No. 30 Thompson Valley on Feb. 13.
Ryan Callies (13.1 PPG) averaged 19 points during the recent win streak, which included a season-high, 27-point performance in a win over Roosevelt on Feb. 18.
