Spring has sprung. Baseball teams in Class 3A, 2A, 1A are solidifying lineups and trying to collect wins as the postseason inches closer.
With that in mind, here are some players who have displayed standout efforts and games to digest in the coming days.
TITANS ARE TRYING TO BE REMEMBERED: Whether the Coal Ridge Titans (14-2-1) will be remembered in school history depends on how they finish out the season.
However, this year’s version of the Titans baseball team is trying its best to make school history as the first boys state champion at the school in any sport.
The Titans, who are in 3A, are fresh off a 14-2 victory over Basalt, their 10th win in a row. This season, Coal Ridge’s offense has been led by Ben Simons (.625); John Luke Houston (.480); and Jakson Slade (.412).
Defensively, Houston also is sporting a 5-0 record with a 1.30 ERA.
Up next for the Titans is a rematch against Basalt at 10 a.m. Saturday at home.
LAS ANIMAS KEEPS ROLLING: Las Animas is sporting a 12-1 record in 2A, and the Trojans have won seven games in a row. Las Animas’ latest victory was a 20-0 drubbing of Florence on Tuesday. Sophomore Jesus Lopez led the barrage, going 4-for-4 at the plate and knocking in five runs.
Braydon Ortiz (.667); Kree Wallace (.558) and Logan Servaes (.421) are providing the primary offensive punch for Trojans. Ortiz also is 5-0 on the pitching mound with a 0.70 ERA.
The only loss for Las Animas was a 7-1 defeat to Monte Vista on April 1.
The Trojans will keep up their playoff push when they entertain Crowley County (8-6) in a 10 a.m. doubleheader Saturday.
LA VETA STAYS IN PLAYOFF MIX: The Peyton Panthers keep flexing their muscles in 2A as they improved to 13-1 on the season following their 12-7 win over La Veta on Tuesday.
Losing is never something a team welcomes but the defeat will actually help La Veta (10-4) in the all-important RPI rankings in 1A.
The Redhawks are right in the Top 15 in the RPI rankings. Logan Cortez (.474), Logan Tenorio (.464) and Lukas Ozzello (.375) are having strong seasons at the plate.
La Veta will try and get back in the win column when it faces Custer County (7-6) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader on the road Friday.
Class 3A
Montezuma-Cortez (10-4) at Alamosa (9-7), 1 p.m., Saturday
Both these teams need to keep winning to stay in the 3A playoff conversation. Montezuma-Cortez is 2-2 in its last four games but has won two in a row sweeping Pagosa Springs in a doubleheader Monday.
The Panthers’ offense is fueled by Cory Carver (.529); Darren Daves (.439) and Michael Krupa (.400). Montezuma-Cortez’s top pitcher has been Krupa with a 2.03 ERA in six appearances.
Alamosa is riding a four-game winning streak but hasn’t played since beating Pueblo Centennial 11-2 on April 14.
Offensively, Jonah Pittman (.487) and Tony Griego (.390) are pacing the Mean Moose.
Class 2A
North Fork (7-6) at Cedaredge (12-1), 2 p.m., April 29
If North Fork wants to make a postseason push it needs to start against the Bruins. A quality win over Cedaredge would do wonders for the Miners in the RPI rankings and are coming off a 6-1 win over Grand Valley (4-12) on Tuesday.
North Fork is paced by Payson Pene (.486) and Bronson Hall (.378). Cedaredge will answer back with Logan Sanders (.524); Tel Geyer (.489) and Dane Brown (.462). The Bruins have won 12 games in a row and visit Pagosa Springs (7-6) at 1 p.m. Friday before taking on North Fork.
Class 1A
Springfield (5-6) at Holly (11-6), 4 p.m., Friday
Springfield has had the best of seasons as it sits one game under .500 and now the Longhorns will try and spring an upset on Holly.
Springfield’s offense is led by Hudson Gourley (.581); Gunnar Mackey (.559). Springfield faces Elkhart (6-2) prior to clashing with Holly. Devin Eaton is leading Holly at the plate with a .673 batting average. Holly is on a heater winning 10 games in a row.
