The end of the regular season in softball is Saturday.

Based on league champs and the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index, the top 32 teams in each of the three classifications will qualify for next week’s regional tournaments.

Two teams will then qualify for state from each of the eight regional sites in a classification.

Below are the seeding battles still worth monitoring before Oct. 7’s end date.

Class 5A

Who will grab the last hosting site: No. 8 Broomfield or No. 9 ThunderRidge? They are separated by thousandths of a point.

The Eagles (18-4) finish the season at 4A No. 46 Fairview Thursday, while the Grizzlies (16-6) are at No. 30 Highlands Ranch.

Three of Broomfield’s four losses this season are all to top-six teams in the rankings, falling to No. 1 Arvada West, No. 5 Erie and No. 6 Horizon. The other was to No. 14 Fossil Ridge.

Kiley Wheaton has led the way for them as a sophomore, hitting .695 with 36 RBIs and seven home runs.

For the Grizzlies, Riley Bowman is an ace who could push them deep in the playoffs. In 93 2/3 innings this fall, she is 11-5 with a 1.57 ERA and 162 strikeouts.

All six of ThunderRidge’s losses have been by four or fewer runs.

Class 4A

Who will nab what could be the last regional spot: No. 32 Longmont or No. 33 Silver Creek? They are separated by hundredths of a point.

The Trojans (11-12) finished their season Wednesday, beating No. 26 Northridge 13-10 to snap a three-game losing streak. In it, they trailed by eight runs heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before scoring 10 runs with two outs in the frame to pull ahead.

Caitlyn Rangel leads the team, hitting .537 with 24 RBIs. She’s also pitched 77 1/3 innings.

The Raptors (9-13) close their season at No. 25 Mead Thursday. They’ve put themselves in postseason contention, winning three of their last four, which included wins over Longmont and the Mavericks.

Riley Reeder leads the team with 18 RBIs.

Class 3A

Who will avoid defending champ Eaton at regionals: No. 31 Cedaredge or No. 32 Jefferson Academy? They are separated by ten-thousandths of a point.

Getting away from the clear top team in the classification will be the priority here. Eaton’s only loss of the season was to 4A No. 1 Holy Family.

If nothing fluctuates with league champs in the seeding, the Jaguars (11-11) would currently be in Eaton’s region, while the Bruins (6-13) would be at No. 2 Strasburg’s.

Cedaredge beat Gunnison Tuesday, snapping a three game-losing streak. Kaylynn O’Connell leads the Bruins with 25 RBIs and a .568 batting average.

Jefferson Academy, which beat Aurora Central 23-22 last week, has had a strange season. Five of its wins have come while scoring 20-plus runs in each. Six have come by forfeit.

Shaelee Torres leads the team with a .587 batting average, 17 RBIs, four triples and a home run.
