The Fruita Monument’s boys hoops team has the longest winning streak in the sport, moving to 19-0 after it beat Grand Junction for the second time this season on Tuesday.
The Wildcats, who are the Class 6A No. 6 team in the latest Colorado Preps Coaches and Media poll, have outscored teams by an average of 25 points this winter. They can make it 20 straight when they face Grand Junction Central at home later Friday night.
In this week’s look-in on boys’ basketball, we look at the biggest win streaks across the 6A, 5A and 4A classifications, and what it means with just two weeks left in the regular season.
Class 6A
No. 6 Fruita Monument; Win Streak: 19: The Wildcats have a commanding two-game lead in the 6A/5A Southwestern League with four games left on their schedule. Currently, they’re the No. 1 team in the 6A CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index, which dictates the postseason field and seeds.
Junior Daniel Thomason leads the way, averaging 16.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He’s shooting 66% from the field and 74% from the free throw line.
UR Legacy; Win Streak: 7: The Lightning are tied with the second-longest win streak in the classification along with No. 1 Valor Christian and No. 2 Rock Canyon.
Having not lost since its 17-point loss to Monarch on Jan. 9, Legacy (11-6, 8-1) has kept pace atop the 6A Front Range League with other one-loss league teams in Rocky Mountain and Monarch.
Senior Joey Delescinskis has upped his scoring by more than 10 points per game since last year, averaging 15.9 PPG. He had a career-high 29 points on 12-of-18 shooting in a win over Mountain Range Tuesday.
Class 5A
No. 1 Mesa Ridge; Win Streak: 12: The Grizzlies (16-2) lost consecutive games back in early December, but have since been untouchable as they look to win a second straight 5A title.
Since edging then-No. 1 Palmer 60-58 on Jan. 19, the Grizzlies outscored each of their next five opponents by at least 19 points, and currently hold a game lead over Palmer in the 5A/4A Colorado Springs Metro South League with two weeks to go.
They face the Terrors again in their season finale Feb. 16.
Tevin and Bryce Riehl have combined for 35 PPG and 11 rebounds per game this season for Mesa Ridge.
UR Falcon; Win Streak: 9: The Falcons (14-3), No. 6 Northfield and No. 8 Dakota Ridge have all won nine straight headed into this weekend.
Senior Eric Graham is averaging 14.9 points and six rebounds as the Falcons lead The Classical Academy by a game in the CS Metro North League with six games remaining. Graham had 24 points on 50% shooting when they beat the Titans on 64-59 on Jan. 17. The two meet again Tuesday.
Falcon is home against Sierra later Friday night.
Class 4A
No. 10 DSST: Montview; Win Streak: 17: The Knights (17-1) haven’t lost since their opening with a 77-58 defeat to No. 2 Colorado Academy. They haven’t been held under 65 points in a game since then, either.
Junior Harun Hamma leads a high-powered offense, averaging 19 PPG, while Tara Majok is averaging a near double-double at 17 PPG and 9.8 RPG.
Taking sole lead of the 4A Frontier League with a 75-61 win over Fort Lupton Saturday, Majok had 26 points and 13 boards. Tegra Kongolo (15.4 PPG) added 21 points and Hamma 20.
They’re at Arrupe Jesuit Saturday.
No. 1 Lutheran; Win Streak: 16: The Lions (16-2) started the year 0-2 before rattling off 16 wins in a row, including victories over 4A top-10 teams in No. 2 Colorado Academy, No. 3 Resurrection Christian, No. 7 Holy Family and No. 8 Severance.
Last week, they beat Golden, which had been ranked in the 5A top 10 earlier in the winter, as well as Cheyenne Mountain.
Against the Demons, Braydon Jacobs (22.6 PPG) scored 30 on 10-for-11 shooting. The senior has scored at least 18 points and shot 50% or better in the last seven games listed on MaxPreps. He had no stats listed in the win over the Red-Tailed Hawks Wednesday.
Lutheran is home against Palmer Ridge Friday.
