Last week, Colorado Preps looked at some of the tightening league races in small-school girls basketball, with the Patriot League (Class 3A), Western Slope (2A) and Arkansas Valley (1A) among those conferences with several teams still in contention for a crown as the postseason approaches.

The drama certainly doesn’t end with just those battles. Things are bound to get a little frisky in several other leagues as coveted spots in CHSAA’s Selection & Seeding Index come to the forefront.

Here are a few more league breakdowns that could be fun to follow the next couple of weeks.

Class 3A

Metro: This 11-team, 4A/3A league frequently produces teams that go far in the playoffs and the talent is shining through again this season. Denver Christian, at 16-1, has a huge pair of games this week against 4A squads Jefferson Academy (3-1 league) and Peak to Peak (4-0). Wins against either or both of those teams could put the Thunder in the driver’s seat, which is quite a statement considering the other contender, Kent Denver, is also a 4A team for postseason.

Intermountain: Pagosa Springs (12-4) took a giant step toward the league title last week with a 30-27 win against Centauri (13-3), but the 3A Falcons will get another crack at the 4A Pirates on Feb. 22 at home. Centauri also has a favorable schedule leading up to that game, which could help it seperate further from the other 3A league contender, Monte Vista (9-5).

Class 2A

Santa Fe: Hoehne (11-2, 4-0) dominated fellow contender Swink, 54-25, last week, and the Farmers won’t face the other league stalwart, Las Animas, until the penultimate game of the regular season. Swink also beat Las Animas in a low scoring affair late last week, and the Lions can still keep pace in the league by getting a key win this Tuesday at Crowley County.

Union Pacific: With some teams having played as many as five league contests so far, and others yet to play one, the UPL is still largely unsettled. Stratton leads the 1A contingent at 10-2 without any league games in the books, and the Eagles are fresh off a win against McClave last week. The Eagles will be looking to track down 2A Burlington (3-0 league, 10-1 overall) and Byers (2-1, 11-4). Burlington just walloped Byers last weekend, 74-42, and the Cougars will face the Eagles on Feb. 13.

Class 1A

Southern Peaks: While these teams are not widely considered state title contenders, there is a nice little race going on in the SPL with Sierra Grande, Centennial and Creede all boasting a chance to win the conference. Sierra Grande holds court at 4-0 as it stands, but the Panthers will face Centennial (2-0 league) on Friday with the chance to get a more firm grasp on things. Creede did fall to SGHS back on Jan. 24, but the Miners can stay afloat with a win over Centennial on Valentine’s Day.
