The girls basketball season is still young, but there is no harm in looking at who is playing well early in the year. With teams not even having a handful of games under their belt, this is still a fluid topic but here is how the top scorers in each classification are shaping up.

**

Class 6A

Four players in the new 6 class are consistently averaging over 19 points per game with Denver South’s Nevaeh Millard leads the way with 20.5 points per game. That effort started as she scored 25 points in a season-opening win over Smoky Hill on Dec. 6. She followed it up with a 16-point game in a win over Lakewood.

Columbine’s Emily Allison is averaging 19.5 points through four games and scored a season-high 28 against Westminster.

Through five games, Liberty’s Jack Rohr has emerged as one of 6A’s top 3-point threats. Her 13 made 3-pointers is near the top of the leaderboard in that category and she averages 19.2 points per game. Eaglecrest’s Mia McKenzie is nipping at Rohr’s average as she sits at an even 19 points per game.

Class 5A

With just one game under her belt, Mountain View’s Addison Branscum is showing to be a top-line scorer. She put up 25 points against Frederick, although the Mountain Lions did lose the game. But with that scoring ability (she shot 54 percent from the floor) the wins will certainly come in due time.

With 11 made 3-pointers so far this year, Sand Creek’s Kennedy Spellman has built a 20.7 points per game average in the young season. The Scorpions are off to a slow start, but considering she put up 30 points in just the third game of her varsity career, she’ll be problematic for opposing defenses all season.

Spellman’s 20.7 points per game average is matched by Thomas Jefferson’s Brooke Murrell. A season-high 32 points helped the Spartans get their first win of the season as they beat Palmer 51-42.

Stanley Lake’s Tallinn Serlen, Glenwood Springs’ Tori Taylor and Evergreen’s Jameson Mott each average an even 20 points per game.

Class 4A

Brihanna Crittendon set the bar high in the start of her high school basketball career. She scored 32 points to lead Riverdale Ridge to a win over Severance to open the season. She did it by shooting 89 percent from the floor. It’s just one game, but as of now she holds the highest scoring average for 4A.

Summit’s Autumn Rivera had a similar output in the Tigers season-opener against Evergreen. She scored 28 points in helping her team start the season 1-0.

Two games into the year, Kennedy’s Keilani Venegas Alvarez averages 21 points per game and Lutheran’s Raelyn Kelty is averaging 19.5.

Class 3A

In four games this season, there is not a team that has held Peyton’s AJ Mannering under 20 points. She opened the season scoring 21 in a win over Manitou Springs and followed it up with a season-high (so far) 29 to help the Panthers beat Limon. She’s shooting 56 percent on the season and averaging 24.8 points per game.

St. Mary’s junior Emerson Kutz is second in the class at 22 points per game. She scored 26 points to lead the Pirates to a win over Elizabeth on Dec. 8.

Highland’s Jenna Batka matches that 22 ppg, but has only played one game so far this season. She scored 22 as the Huskies beat Windsor Charter Academy.

Class 2A

At 31.5 points per game, Akron’s Addi Kissinger leads all players regardless of classification in scoring average among players who have played at least two games. She exploded for 38 points against Burlington to open the season and followed it up by scoring 25 in a win over Stratton.

Through five games, Center’s Alicia Rios has put together a consistent effort, averaging 25 points per game. She was held to 10 in a loss to Salida but has scored at least 25 ppg since then.

Caliche’s Karsyn Huss, Dayspring Christian Academy’s Aliya McClanahan and Burlington’s Kiyarra Williams are averaging at least 20 points per game.

Class 1A

The top three scorers in 1A have each only played one game. While these numbers may not hold, they gave certainly put together some solid early performances. Kiowa’s Kendra Byrd leads the pack at 31 points. She got the majority of those from 3-pointers to help her team beat Flagler to open the season.

De Beque’s Rachel Graham scored 25 points – and pulled down 12 rebounds in the process – to help the Dragos beat Ridgway.

Cheraw’s Crislyn Miell scored 21 in a season-opening win against Dolores last week.
