The second week of the Colorado Preps Coaches and Media rankings were released Monday, and there was only a bit of movement.

But it may be telling for things to come.

In each of the three big-school classifications only one new team was added to its top 10, with Class 6A Mullen, 5A Green Mountain and 4A Delta all new to the rankings.

In this week’s look at girls’ basketball, let’s focus on those three top-10 newcomers as well as unranked candidates that could move into it in the coming weeks.

Class 6A

No. 10 Mullen (first out last week): The Mustangs (9-4), led by a freshman-senior pairing in Makenzie Jones (13.5 PPG, 5.8 RPG) and Allison Schwertner (13.4, 6.3), moved up a spot thanks to their win over Rocky Mountain, and previous-No. 8 Erie’s pair of losses last week.

Schwertner and Jones each had 19 points and combined for 14 boards in Saturday’s 67-54 road win over the Lobos. The Mustangs outrebounded Rocky Mountain 31-19.

They host Overland Wednesday before traveling to No. 3 Cherry Creek Friday.

Arapahoe (first out this week): The Warriors (8-4) may be getting overlooked due to their 2-4 start to the winter, which included a pair of out-of-state losses as well as double-digit losses to No. 5 Valor Christian and No. 9 Regis Jesuit.

But since then they’ve won six straight, including four by double figures.

Liz Gentry (22.1 PPG, 9.4 RPG) has scored more than 20 points in her last four games, coming in road wins over Fossil Ridge, Columbine, ThunderRidge and Rampart. In Saturday’s 68-46 win over the Rams, she had 28 points on 12-of-20 shooting. She also had seven rebounds.

They’re home against No. 3 Cherry Creek Wednesday and No. 4 Grandview Friday.

Class 5A

No. 6 Green Mountain (third out last week): The Rams (8-3) soared up seven spots in the rankings after wins over No. 7 Standley Lake and Conifer last week.

Julia Schafer is shooting 53%, averaging 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. She went 10-for-10 from the field and scored 20 points Wednesday, doubling Conifer by herself in a 65-10 victory.

Green Mountain, which has allowed just 31.7 PPG this winter, is at Dakota Ridge Wednesday, and is home against Littleton Friday.

Palmer Ridge (third out this week): The Bears (9-4) are led by their defense. They’re 1-4 when allowing 35 or more points and 8-0 when they’ve allowed fewer than it.

Six players are averaging at least 4.9 PPG from them, fronted by Taylor Peterson (8.2 PPG, 7.2 RPG). Corinna Arellano (3.2 PPG) scored in double figures for the first time in her career Saturday, putting up 17 in a 43-33 win over Pueblo County.

The Bears, winners of three straight, are at Lutheran Wednesday and Lewis-Palmer Friday.

Class 4A

No. 10 Delta (first out last week): Following an 0-4 start, the Panthers (8-4) have won eight straight.

Kylie Huff (11.5 PPG) and Breezy Huff (7.3 PPG) each had 15 points in Saturday’s 68-30 win over Coal Ridge. The Panthers allowed 30 points or fewer in three games in three days last week, which included a 35-24 win over Eagle Valley Thursday and a 54-18 win over Steamboat Springs Friday. Then again in a 61-10 win over Rifle on Tuesday.

Delta is at Moffat County Saturday.

Jefferson Academy (first out this week): The Jaguars (8-2) turned some heads with a 45-3 win against Stargate School Saturday. They allowed two points in the first quarter and one in the fourth.

In the bigger picture, the Jags are closing in on the top 10 after four straight victories.

Either junior Elsa Nygren (13 PPG, 7.3 RPG) or Rylin Chichirico (8.8, 4) has led the team in scoring in all 10 games this winter. JA’s lone losses on the year are to No. 8 Resurrection Christian and No. 9 Colorado Academy.

The Jags are home against Dayspring Christian Thursday and Colorado Academy Saturday.
