While some small-school girls basketball teams are breathing easy in this final week of regular season play, other squads are huffin’ and puffin’ in every last opportunity to make the 32-team brackets in Class 3A, 2A and 1A.

While in the pros you’d often see playoff-bound teams resting their best players, the desire to pour every ounce of energy into winning league tournaments is still present with some of the elite Colorado teams this week. That makes it that much harder for those teams on the bubble to make any moves. But try they will.

Below, Colorado Preps looks at the bubble teams in each classification and what hope there is for each to stay in or break into the top 32.

Class 3A

Looking good: Middle Park, Liberty Common, Forge Christian. With three games left, Middle Park needs to remain focused to keep its standing in the low 30s. The Panthers play Alameda, The Academy and Jefferson Academy to end the year. Liberty Common has lost two in a row and plays Platte Valley in tournament play Tuesday night. At 31 in the Index, the Eagles might need to win one of their two remaining games to stay in. Forge Christian has a tough one Friday against Denver Christian to end the season, so the strength of schedule might help the Fury stay in the mix even with a loss.

Holding out hope: Wray and Jefferson. Wray is 5-16, with two wins in a row and a strong schedule keeping the Eagles in the conversation. Jefferson, at 34 in the Index, has more wins (12) than a few teams above it, but the Saints likely will not be rewarded very heavily with wins in their next couple of games because of who they play. They can’t be counted out, though.

Needs a miracle: Rye. The Thunderbolts are 8-12 overall but have a couple of games played that don’t count for the Index. A win against Crowley County on Tuesday would need to start a torrid run through the final week.

Class 2A

Looking good: Ridgway, Union Colony Prep. Union Colony Prep has a busy week ahead in the Mile High League tournament, but the Timberwolves have strength of schedule in their favor while sitting at No. 31 in the 2A Index. Ridgway has played well since Jan. 21 (8-1), and the Demons should have opportunities to add to that streak this week and stay at No. 30 or better.

Holding out hope: Loveland Classical and Golden View Classical. Loveland Classical’s involvement in the Foothills League Tournament should bouy the Lions’ chances of holding on to the No. 32 slot. However, LCS (12-9) plays GVC (11-8) on Tuesday night, which could flip things immediately and put the Sentinels in the desirable Index position with time running out.

Needs a miracle: Kiowa and Twin Peaks Classical. The Indians are out of games, so they’ll need some weird things to take place in order to leapfrog into the top 32. Twin Peaks will likely need to upset Addenbrooke Classical (19-3) on Friday in order to have any shot.

Class 1A

Looking good: Creede, Elbert and Weldon Valley. Creede has won eight straight games to put the Miners in a favorable position in the final week of play. Elbert has a tough pair of weekend games against Genoa-Hugo/Karval and Cheyenne Wells, and the Bulldogs should be fine if they can win just one of those two contests. Weldon Valley has a winnable game against Peetz on Friday morning, giving the Warriors the upper hand in keeping its No. 32 position.

Holding out hope: Centennial and Denver Jewish Day. Centennial has won two games in a row but will need a strong push in the Southern Peaks tournament to have a shot at breaking through. Denver Jewish Day has an 8-8 record but sits at No. 34 in the Index. The Tigers need outside help, for sure.

Needs a miracle: Holly and Wiley. A four-game losing streak has hindered Holly’s chances for regional play, but the Wildcats still have at least two games to right the ship, against Kit Carson and Eads. Easier said than done though. Wiley faces three teams with .500 or better season records, so the Panthers will need to play perfect and nab a couple of upsets if they want their season to continue.
