At some point in every athletes journey, seeds for interest in sports are planted somewhere.

It’s likely that baseball players played in an informal level and Park and Rec ball before jumping into travel teams. Organizations like the YMCA often provide good starting points for basketball players before their love of the game got them into the AAU circuit.

For a sport that has seen a surge in popularity of late, there is an outlet in Colorado that will provide the ultimate breeding ground as it heads toward sanctioning by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

Girls flag football has seen a significant increase in popularity and participation in recent years. In Colorado, the second season in its pilot program under the CHSAA banner, Arvada West knocked off Cherry Creek to claim the state championship.

And brighter days are only ahead.

But a big reason that they’re ahead is that girls are getting a head sport and participating in the sport at the youth level. The Gold Crown Foundation has been instrumental in providing kids an opportunity to participate in the sport at the youth level and it will serve a crucial developmental system as those players reach the high school level.

Gold Crown Foundation’s spring season is set to commence this month as three divisions will participate in the sport over a span of one month. The teams are broken up by age group with 3rd-5th graders in one division, 6th-8th in another and finally 9th-11th in the final division.

The spring league is built on a 10-game season with a practice/play model that emphasizes 45 minutes of practice and two 30-minute games each week.

The initial flag football clinic from Gold Crown saw a high level in success, not just in terms of participation but for what the sport aims to do for kids. The ability to be active in an outdoor setting and establish bonds with new teammates and friends are two of the original core values of youth sports. The flag football program at Gold Crown will provide those core values for the sport – while staying true to its founding principle of Girls in Sports – the same way it has for all its athletic programs dating back to the start of the foundation in 1986.

And with flag football becoming an increasingly popular sport across the United States, Gold Crown provides the perfect training ground for young athletes to establish their love for the sport and start dreaming of winning state championships at the high school level.
