ARVADA — Coming off a loss and draw in its previous two outings, Golden’s girls soccer team came out determined Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

“You learn a lot from losses. The girls have talked a lot about the loss and draw,” Golden coach Isaac Clark said. “A lot of good things have come out of it. They wanted to come out here and play no matter the weather. They came out here focused.”

Golden junior Leah Welte scored 40 seconds into the Class 4A/3A Jeffco League game against Pomona. The Demons never looked back. Golden took a 13-0 victory in the conference game that ended at halftime with the 10-goal margin.

The weather conditions weren’t ideal with snow and a cold north wind, but the Demons’ offense was hot with eight different goal scorers in the victory.

“It is really cold,” said Golden junior Carly Reed after putting in three consecutive goals over the span of seven minutes to push the Demons’ lead to 4-0 in the opening 17 minutes. “There wasn’t a lot of snow on the field, so that was nice.”

Sophomore Katelyn Sing also had a hat-trick with three goals over a 6-minute span for the Demons.

“We were glad to get this one in,” Clark said.

Dakota Ridge versus Standley Lake was scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at NAAC, but was postponed with the temperature dropping into the 20s and windchill in the teens after the sun went down.

Dakota Ridge (6-1, 3-0 in league) sits atop of the conference standings, followed by Evergreen (4-1-2, 3-0-1) and Green Mountain (7-0-1, 2-0-1). Dakota Ridge handed Golden its first loss of the season on March 28. Golden had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Columbine on March 31.

“Dakota was a hard game,” Reed said. “The Columbine game could have gone differently. It was nice to come out here and get a win.”

Golden (4-1-1, 2-1-0) still has seven league game remaining over the next four weeks. There is still a chance for the Demons to challenge for the conference title.

“Dakota Ridge, Evergreen and Green Mountain are all good teams,” Reed said. “We want to get results against them. We want to beat the good teams.”

Golden is scheduled to face D’Evelyn (Tuesday, April 8) and Bear Creek (Friday, April 11) next week. Pomona (2-7, 0-4) will try to end its 6-game losing streak when it plays Conifer on Tuesday, April 8.
