The calendar shows there are still two weeks remaining in the regular season for girls basketball teams in the 3A, 2A and 1A classifications. There certainly are other data points that coaches are looking at this time of year, however.

The small schools desperately eye a top-8 finish in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index — at least for one more year — because that translates into two home games for regionals. When it all plays out, a couple of really good teams are gonna have to find a way to win two games on the road in order to get to the Great 8.

As of Thursday morning, Roaring Fork (3A), Heritage Christian (2A) and Cheraw (1A) sat in the No. 9 slot in the Index, just behind the No. 8s (3A Resurrection Christian, 2A Rangely, 1A Prairie). In the No. 10 spots were Buena Vista (3A), Holyoke (2A) and Briggsdale (1A). Finally, in the No. 11 spots — North Fork (3A), Calhan (2A) and Idalia (1A).

It can be assumed that it would be quite difficult for anyone below 11 to jump up to 8 and grasp that final regional spot. It also wouldn’t be crazy to see all the top teams keep winning and thus hold their positions.

What it all amounts to is teams on that threshold will want to win at all costs, and that will make for an exciting bunch of games while everything plays out.

Here are some of the marquee matchups for the upcoming week:

Class 3A

Resurrection Christian at Yuma, Tuesday, 6 p.m.
The Cougars (12-5) have a tough set of two road games this week, capped with a venture out east to face No. 2 Yuma (14-4). Any misstep for RCS could lead to a road regional. Senior Bethany Vrooman (17.5 points per game) is doing her best to bolster a young group’s offense. In fact, there are no other seniors on the roster. Yuma will be ready to hold serve at its home gym, behind senior Berkley Nighswonger (12.9 ppg) and junior Taryn Sheffield (11.5 ppg).

Class 2A

Sedgwick County at Holyoke, Friday, 5 p.m.
Holyoke’s next three games are a gauntlet, as the Dragons face SCHS, Merino and Simla. They could get a nice boost of confidence by knocking off the Cougars on Friday, and there’s no doubt freshman Raia Sprague (17.2 ppg) and senior Ellie Kleve (10.7) will need to continue pacing the offense as they have if the Dragons want a shot at hosting a regional.

Class 1A

Briggsdale at Fleming, Friday, 6 p.m.

An overtime win last Saturday against Sedgwick County kept Briggsdale in the mix. A road win Friday against the Wildcats might prove to be even more meaningful. The Falcons, on a modest three-game win streak, could see their star senior Claire Brown eclipse 1,000 career points as soon as Friday. She’s only 22 away, per MaxPreps. Briggsdale also could be cheering on Fleming a little bit Thursday, as Fleming faces Prairie.
